UAAP Cheerdance Competition Top 3 (UP, UST, FEU) Scores

Philippine Star

The University of the Philippines Pep Squad bucked the pressure and went ethnic and more to run away with its second straight UAAP Samsung Cheer Dance Competition crown before a record crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Maroons did everything, from mixing tribal songs and dances with difficult stunts and acrobatics, to having their locks cut – Mohawk and ethnic style – before capping their sterling performance with a human replica of the university’s Oblation to retain the crown they won last season.

UP won it handily with a score of 93.3 points, way ahead of the Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which also finished runner-up for the second straight time with 85.3 points. Far Eastern U Cheering Squad took third place honors with 83.9 points.

“We’ve been having problems because the mounting pressure of being the defending champion and the Centennial host and it caused some problems along the way,” said UP co-captain Angelica Sison, a communications research senior in the din of the celebration before a record 23,443 paying patrons.

“But we found ourselves believing in each other. We basically re-focused our purpose in this competition. Ultimately, we enjoyed every step, every dance, every stunt. It’s fun, fun, fun.”

The team, composed of a total of 80 competing and non-competing members took home the top purse worth P195,000 plus Samsung MP3s to 25 members.

UST and FEU received P120,000 and P80,000, respectively.

Among the stunts performed by UP were three pyramids, some straddle tosses, one-man pop-off catch flip transfer for twisting dismount, pull downs, a four-man full twisting transfer, tumbling passes and a tick-tock stunt.

UP iced the victory with sweeping effect using a huge green and maroon-colored cloth that when it was removed, two letters – U and P – and the human oblation emerged.

“The oblation idea was the brilliance of a last-minute thinking. Coach Lalaine Perena thought of it,” said Sison.

“We even hired a choreographer in RM Garcia who worked in Disney in Hong Kong, He came home to put this thing together for us,” said Sison. “We also had to cut our hair for the team because this was the idea of coach Lala.”

for the rest of the schools...just type the words on youtube. They should be there somewhere :D
================================

Writer's Note: There have been issues regarding fans of other universities who either felt that their team should've made it to the top 3 or that the top 2 or top 3 teams didn't deserve the place they are in now.

Here's my thoughts on that: WHY DON'T YOU BE THE JUDGE AND GIVE THE LOWEST SCORES TO THE TEAMS YOUR SCHOOL IS COMPETING AGAINST?!

There are many reasons why those judges were picked. First and foremost...THEY ARE ALL OLD LOLs. Funny, but the fact that they're old means that they don't like being told what to do... Meaning they don't give a rat's @ss on what we think. All they care about is just giving the just scores and getting paid for it. To add, they just want to get the whole thing over with so that they can have their sunday rest.

Second is the fact that they ALL have EXPERIENCES in the field. HELL even ADMU's judge looked like he just came out of a bar but he had his experience in the field. Specially their accreditations...I don't know any of them, save for our very own Felicitas Francisco, but when I heard the descriptions, I already laid my trust to those guys.

Lastly, There's a criteria FFS. SO YOU'RE TEAM DID THIS UBER AWESOME MOVE once or twice in succession...but it all goes down to how each move scored. What the crowd enjoyed might be something worth 3-5 points and the mistakes and the moves they didn't do might add up to 10-15 points. Its all objective with scores. Lets not forget that THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST SCORES ARE NOT INCLUDED. Meaning no OUTLIERS.

I HOPE I CLEAR THINGS UP. Just think about the WHOLE event and not just you're team and how you THINK THEY DESERVED a place in the TOP 3. Its idiots like them that ruin a guy's happy day.

PS: Some people in some forums post stupid things just for the hell of it, without even thinking of what the receiver would feel. They all say what they want with no control...not knowing that it makes them LOOK LIKE AN @SS HOLE in real life. KNOW YOUR ETHICS. If you love your school THAT MUCH, show them that your school has taught you to be reasonable and ethical. Otherwise be a disgrace to them

GO UST!!! (2008 UAAP CHEERDANCE COMPETITION)

,

YAY! UST won 2nd (again). I’m not surprised since i knew the moves weren’t original compared to UP. I mean…when I saw UP’s moves…I was “woah…goodluck to UST lols”

the key that made UP first was originality and not too obvious errors. I really enjoyed watching UP’s new stuff. Specially the oblation dude ) not to mention UP’s Stunner girl She’s really gorgeous! If she had her hair long after this…WOW she’ll be one hell of a boy magnet

It was difficulty that propelled UST above the rest, though only second to UP’s originality. Never the less…I still cheer GO USTe! at our very own Salinggawi Dance Troupe. ALWAYS SMILE GUYS!

About th FEU…I wasn’t fully able to watch it since I was writing a report…but I saw the banner and the props they used. So I guess synchronization and props won them 3rd.

As always…the female hosts of this year’s cheerdance competition will always be beautiful. I found Sharon Yu, Kamae De Jesus, UP’s host (didn’t hear her name) and UE’s host (sorry…all I can remember was her surname…Co.) to be the beautiful ones this year

ADMU and AdU had some of the cutest pep squad members this year.

With one of ADMU’s female squad members having muscular abs and pretty faces…a guy just can’t help but fall in love <3

Adu had this one tall girl who really stood out, not only because she was tall, because she was the most beautiful of the bunch! IMO AdU chose the members well if we were to base it on beauty and smexiness.

THIS MAY BE THE BEST UAAP CHEERDANCE COMPETITION YET. HOPING FOR MORE NEXT YEAR!
w00t! GO UP! GO UST! GO FEU!

PS: My Mom was a Chem. Eng. Graduate of UPD, She made a bet that if UST wins, she gives me extra allowance this week…and if UP wins, I owe her a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts!
now I owe her something!

Google Chrome, Day 2

Slashdot

Seems that almost every story submitted to Slashdot last night in some way involved Google's Chrome that we started talking about yesterday. Dotan Cohen noted that according to Clicky Chrome has hit 3% browser share. Since Google has decided to release Chrome only for Windows, I now share for you 3 reviews written by others: the first comes from alexy2k, the second from mildsiete, and the third from oli4uk. They all seem to feature various opinions and charts and screenshots demonstrating various exciting points.

==================================
Writer's note: I'm using Google's Chrome right now. it lacks some features I got used to in other browsers such as opera's shift+click and it opens a link from the URL bar to a new tab. it also lacks the menu bars and toolbars that usual browsers have like the file, view, tools, etc. But the absence of these very essentials make it look more slick and actually SEXY to use. It's not as heavy on memory as Firefox or Opera. I like the new features it has, specially the "most visited" function it has when you open a new tab. other notable functions are the shift+click and the ctrl+click function. Shift opens the link in a new window, while Ctrl opens the link in a new tab. One very nice function that I seemed to enjoy is the incognito mode. You can view forums as a guest even if you are logged in. It also makes sure nothing is saved in your sessions save for downloads and bookmarks. Really great for porn browsers who share a computer with the family LOL

Everything looks great on beta mode, save for the missing basic functions and stuff. REMEMBER: IT IS STILL ON BETA. Don't fuss about bugs or sites that don't work. My advice is that you stay with Opera or Mozilla while Google is still fixing Chrome.

Browser Wars: Google Unleashes Chrome!

In its most aggressive attack on Microsoft to date, inside sources with knowledge of the Chrome project said that Google is preparing to unveil its brand new browser for download as early as TODAY to try and loosen Microsoft’s stranglehold on the most vital piece of navigating software for the internet.

The launch is supposedly today, but I have not seen it anywhere. I'd be surprised if Google launched this in such a mediocre way and not anything similar to how Firefox did the 3.0 launch. Let's see what happens, but one thing is for sure, if they are truly launching this, it will be a total improvement of any (if not all) Firefox plug-in downsides as well as the Firefox browser design.

Google Blogoscoped

Google announced their browser Google Chrome to be available on Tuesday, but their download page and tour was already partly available at gears.google.com/chrome/ just now, as Uval in the forum noticed. While the download itself didn’t work when I tried, I was able to extract some screenshots, from the frontpage but also the YouTube videos. And while the product tour videos themselves seemed to require a special group membership at YouTube, the video still previews are public and you can paste the video identifier into a URL like this one to see more high quality stills.

The service’s logo.

Screenshots of Google Chrome from the service’s frontpage.

The auto-completion of the so-called “omnibox” address bar.

The homepage showing 9 thumbnailed pages to access, along with more pointers in the side-bar, to appear “[e]very time you open a new tab”, as Google says.

This screenshot shows Google Calendar and a dialog reading “Create shortcuts in the following locations”, listing Desktop, Start Menu and Quick Launch Bar.

Zooming in on the browser tabs.

The Google Chrome task manager, e.g. to monitor if certain sites cause memory problems.

A screen showing the “Google incognito” mode for allegedly more private browsing.

Another auto-completion example.

A star near the address input bar lets you bookmark a page, apparently.

A look into the settings menu.

Google in their tour says with Chrome “you see your download’s status at the bottom of your current window.”

On a related note, I asked Scott McCloud – creator of the comic book introducing Google Chrome – some questions. Scott now put up a mini-FAQ on his site. He says he’d been working on the comic off and on “from March through August.” On the question of who came up with the visualizations, he says there was some “rough whiteboard sketching during the interviews” but that most were his though. Asked about how many of these comics were printed, Scott says it was just a limited run, and that he didn’t sign any yet. He adds this project was “a big challenge” considering he had “never done such a thing before.”

AP Associated Press

Google takes aim at Microsoft with new Web browser

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google Inc. is releasing its own Web browser in a long-anticipated move aimed at countering the dominance of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer and ensuring easy access to its market-leading search engine.

The Mountain View-based company took the unusual step of announcing its latest product on the Labor Day holiday after it prematurely sent out a comic book drawn up to herald the new browser's arrival.

The free browser, called "Chrome," is supposed to be available for downloading Tuesday in more than 100 countries for computers running on Microsoft's Windows operating system. Google said it's still working on versions compatible with Apple Inc.'s Mac computer and the Linux operating system.

Google's browser is expected to hit the market a week after Microsoft's unveiling of a test version of its latest browser update, Internet Explorer 8. The tweaks include more tools for Web surfers to cloak their online preferences, creating a shield that could make it more difficult for Google and other marketing networks to figure out which ads are most likely to appeal to which individuals.

Although Google is using a cartoonish approach to promote Chrome, the new browser underscores the gravity of Google's rivalry with Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer is used by about 75 percent of Web surfers.

Google's lead in the lucrative Internet search market is nearly as commanding, with its engine processing nearly two-thirds of the Web's queries.

For the past few years, Google has been trying to take advantage of its search engine's popularity to loosen Microsoft's grip on how most people interact with personal computers.

The assault so far has been focused on a bundle of computer programs, including word processing and spreadsheet applications, that Google offers as an alternative to one of Microsoft's biggest money makers, its Office suite of products.

Google has tried to make its alternatives more appealing and accessible by hosting them for free over Internet connections instead of requiring users to pay a licensing fee to install them on individual computers, as Microsoft typically does.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has tried to thwart Google by investing billions in the development of its own search engine and making an unsuccessful attempt to buy Yahoo Inc. for $47.5 billion.

The tensions between Microsoft and Google now seem likely to escalate with Google's foray into Web browsing.

Until now, Google had been trying to undermine Internet Explorer by supporting Firefox, a Web browser developed by the open-source Mozilla Foundation. Bolstered by an advertising partnership with Google's search engine, Firefox ranks as the second most popular browser, with a market share of more than 10 percent. Google recently extended its advertising alliance with Firefox through 2011.

Bearing the stamp of Google's renowned brand, Chrome could be an even more formidable rival to Explorer.

Still, Google's name is no guarantee of success. For instance, Google's instant messaging service hasn't made come close to catching up to the market-leading products made by Yahoo, Microsoft and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL.

In a blog post Monday, Google touted Chrome as a more sophisticated Web browser better suited for displaying the dynamic and interactive content blossoming on the Web as people migrate from television, radio and newspapers.

"The Web gets better with more options and innovation," Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google's engineering director, wrote in the posting. "Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the Web even better."

Microsoft brushed aside the threat in a statement Monday from Dean Hachamovitch, Internet Explorer's general manager.

"The browser landscape is highly competitive, but people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips ... and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online," Hachamovitch said.

Even as it has backed Firefox, Google has openly fretted about the possible ramifications of Microsoft's huge lead in Web browsing.

Google is worried that Microsoft could abuse its power by manipulating Internet Explorer's default settings in a way that might diminish traffic to Google's search engine, which serves as the hub of the largest online ad network.

In 2006, Google contacted the Justice Department to raise alarms about changes to Internet Explorer that Google believed made it more difficult to install search toolbars made by Microsoft's rivals. Although regulators decided not to intervene, Microsoft subsequently modified the way Explorer handled the selection of search toolbars.

WOW...Opera's got a new opponent to look out for

Alodia Almira Arraiza Gosiengfiao: The Blackmage of Art

, , , ...

Before anything else, she named her deviant art "blackmage9" since she seems to be fond of the Final Fantasy 9 character VIVI (i think...i have trouble locating the page in her DA site) and the number 9 since its her favorite number (and maybe because its her birth number) which is also my favorite number!
Here's the much needed information on who I am talking about:

WIKIPEDIA
============================================================================
Alodia Almira Arraiza Gosiengfiao (born March 9, 1988 in Quezon City, Philippines) is a very well-known Filipino cosplayer and model. She is of Filipino, Chinese and Spanish descent. Her father is Fil-Chinese while her mother is Fil-Spanish. She has modeled for various magazines, such as Meg Magazine's October Issue 2007 and Candy Magazine's November Issue 2007; has guested for several TV shows on Studio 23, Animax, QTV; and recently appeared in famous local band Pedicab's latest music video "Ang Pusa Mo", first aired at Myx. Her popularity began by gracing the cover of Culture Crash Magazine in December 2003 as Rikku of FFX-2 along with her sister, Ashley Gosiengfiao, as Yuna of FFX-2. Since then, she continued to cosplay various characters from different anime and videogames. In October 2005, Alodia was chosen as the Rose-It Girl during the Level Up Games' Rose Online Event held at the Dolphin Park, Glorietta Makati City. She is also Animax's first ever Levi's Kawaii girl winner in the last episode of Mad Mad Fun, which was announced on air on October 27, 2007.

As a high school student, Alodia was a member of the Miriam College High School Pep Squad, which garnered quite a few awards at inter-school competitions like the 2002 Johnson & Johnson Teen Cheer Competition. She was also well-known for her skills in the arts, and won many on-the-spot poster-making contests, and was often sent to represent the school in inter-school art competitions. Her achievements in the arts include placing first at the Ragnarok Online: War of Emperium On-the-Spot Drawing Contest, and winning first place for her "Modern Filipina" design at the Ateneo Siklab Fashion Design Week.

Alodia is also known for being selected as the Philippine ROSE Online It-Girl during the 2005 ROSE Bash. She is also the spokesmodel for CSCENTRL.COM since 2006 to the present.

============================================================================

After the generic information, lemme have my own way of introducing her :D I won't mention what is already posted above. That would otherwise be termed cyclic redundancy. LOL

I saw her in person lots of times before. I can't fully trust my opinion if I said she was nice since I often JUST SEE her, not really a casual way of knowing a person inside-out. I guess basing it on lots of people's comments and stuff...she's pretty nice. Unless you posted the way this thread's thread starter wanted you to post and the way their symbol of purpose wants you to be, you might also think she's nice based on what you read about her. She's the first cosplayer that I actually loved...to see each time she's in an event. She recently went as a judge on previous cosplay events in the Philippines NOT BECAUSE SHE WOULD BE GUARANTEED A WIN but because she's a celebrity here now...well not "ACTRESS" celebrity but a celebrity nonetheless. She is actually a meme in 4chan's /cgl but she's no reigning goddess there as much as she is in our country. The insult "FAILodia" is the word they remember whenever her name and/or picture is posted there. Despite that, she feels that little insults and arguments over the internet are pretty much wasted bandwidth and time so she just ignores them at most.

Her art, photography are often praised as above average. In which case, some of her art have been stolen before and used for commercial purposes. One such incident was the famous Earth Day Jam 2008 which was held here in the Philippines last april 25th 2008. The company tried to make peace with the infringement by apologizing and reasoning out that they had no idea where the pictures were coming from. They also prepared to give them (Alodia and her family) free VIP tickets and Backstage passes for the said event. Read the comments given by friends and family alike here even Alodia and her Mom had to clear things up a bit. Her explanation of the story the way she heard and saw it here

She has also been a victim of a few hacking incidents, which up until now the culprit/s remain unknown (I may have a clue though...which I won't tell since the story is long forgotten and deserves to be so until another one resurfaces)

As you can see, fame comes with a price. Despite this, she continues to just move on and let go of the things that happened in the past and just remain strong and ever bold in the face of such troubles in life. Last time I saw her, she pretty much looked happy as ever, or even happier. I guess she grew much more mature after the said incidents.

Did I mention she likes collecting figurines from famous artists? no? well I just wrote it so don't fess! LOL. Unlike her, I never really liked collecting figurines. She often likes collecting figurines based on games or art magazines done by famous artists such as Shunya Yamashita an easy google of his name should tell you who and what he is famous for.

She is also a known video gamer. From PC to PS3. I'm not surprised on this part though. Most new artists get inspiration from games these days, if not then the game's artists. Like me, she is also a fan of SQUARE-ENIX's Final Fantasy series. She is also known to play fighting games such as the ever legendary game series TEKKEN. She is fond of playing the said game on her PSP awhile back. Last I checked, she was a Lord of War

As famous as she is, she also got invited to be part of a few TV Shows (a few of her recent tv appearances can be found here, here, and here , and a Music video as mentioned above. She is often asked to model, feature, and interviewed on newspapers and magazines. Here's a list of her Media (Magazine/Newspaper) Scans

Before it is forgotten, she is a fan of the anime (and manga?) DEATHNOTE (here, here, and here)

She also has her DA site reaching over more than 1 million views and is soon reaching the 2 million mark. She often holds contests regarding pageviews or what the japanese call Kiriban. It often revolves around palindromes (1001001, 998899, etc.), a series of continuous numbers (1,234,567), or epic numbers such as her achieved 1,000,000 page views. One of her MOST DIE HARD FAN out there was able to give the screenshot for her 1,000,000th pageviews and won the prize she put up. The guy's name in the net is tsukurimashou. I think I've seen him before. If I was right based on instinct, he's bald(?) or semi-bald at least. When I first saw him bidding for her doll I automatically assumed that this guy's both EFFING RICH and an AWFULLY NICE guy. I kinda imagined what he looks like...and lets just hope that he's the bald semi-muscular guy I saw since the one I imagined was pretty much not as "nice" looking as the bald one LOL.

Another fan, and maybe family friend to be noted, is Mike Abundo He is a well known professional through out the internet both locally and internationally (i think) He has this issue before involving alodia's pictures on the FHM site (A local adult magazine). I am not entirely sure if its on the site OR on the very magazine but this sure sparked some hatred. Not to mention the very scandal he faced regarding a local website name based on Filipino cosplayers. I've got into a casual conversation with him before. He is...well nice in my terms of nice for a person I just met not more than 4 times. He's pretty much laid back now and just doing his job. Alodia and her family has made their peace with him regarding the FHM issue but regarding the website name scandal...the Filipino cosplay world may not forgive him all the way until they eventually forget about it.

She is often linked with Mark Gosingtian though noone would DARE post it since it often gets deleted since alodia hates it when things that are " not true" are posted, specially on her very own sites. IMHO (sorry if she or her friends are reading this) I really THINK (emphasis on the conditional and unconfirmed word THINK) that they got something going on there. Just browse through her photoshoot galleries and journals and that should make you as suspicious :D

She has MANY fans not only in our country but from abroad as well. Most fans here are Japaholics. Japaholics in our country means someone who has a CRAVING for japanese style, food, art, clothing, shows, music, videos, movies, and of course, animation. Most fans from abroad may not be well known Japaholics but share the same interests Ms. Gosiengfiao has. Most of those fans from abroad are fellow "deviants" who found out about her THROUGH HER GALLERIES, not on TV, or any other international cosplay website.

These and all the other reasons out there just shows how she earned her respect as a deviant artist and the title

"The Blackmage of Art"

PS: Here's Alodia's resume if anyone's interested in hiring her after she graduates this year.

PPS: Various sites she:

Owns
Her Deviant Art account
Her Multiply account
Her Friendster account

PPPS: I THINK that her logo (found on the upper right corner) was based on her surname. Check out the gf on Gosiengfiao. then flip it :D
Just a theory though

PPPPS: (LOL Lots of Ps)
The "The Blackmage of Art" title is copyright to me.
