The FreeBSD accident

On Friday I wanted to contact the FreeBSD developers to establish good relations between Opera and FreeBSD and managed to do exactly the opposite

Not only there were already relations that I did not know about but also the whole FreeBSD community got involved when I accidentally sent the mail to one of the most popular FreeBSD mailing lists.

That was not what I initially wanted to achieve! But it got worse. Being a marketing person and therefore not very technically capable

I assumed that FreeBSD was a form of Linux...

I realised quickly after repeatedly being bashed by people both on the mailing list but also by my colleagues what a HUGE mistake I made!!!

Dear FreeBSD users both inside and outside Opera, please accept my sincere apologies!

Heh, yes. You certainly hit the wrong maillinglist with an incredible marksmanship

No hard feelings, some BSD users just happen to can't stand the linux confusion anymore. As the BSDs don't have that much marketing outside of the technical realm, that confusion is not uncommon, sadly.

Don't worry, Anna. At least we have all learnt something out of your 'accident'. You noticed that BSD is not Linux and people at freebsd-questions learnt that Opera still cares about them, which is a very nice thing. Thank you for that.

Po raz kolejny okazuje sie, ze zla opinia na temat spolecznosci uzytkownikow - i developerow - BSD jest, przynajmniej po czesci, uzasadniona. Czasami potrafia byc naprawde wredni i czepiac sie. Szkoda.

On the other hand, its nice that Opera actually does care (it still does, i hope ;-) about FreeBSD. If only Flash worked... But that's the Macromedia fault, not Opera's.

I do not think any offence was intended by the FreeBSD community. They are simply passionate about their product/OS, in the same way as Opera people are passionate about Opera. Sometimes that message may not come accross so well as it is hoped, but I am sure it was intended to be constructive criticism. A limitation of the written medium perhaps.
