Where some of my musical time goes

,

Community theatre. Specifically, the Erie Playhouse (their website is here.)

The Playhouse has been around for many years; I've been a part of it since 2001, and have played in almost 30 shows.

It amazes me that the pit orchestra usually gets no rehearsal time by itself; and in two or three run-throughs and "tech week" comes up sounding as good as they do. (There are exceptions, though -- we did "The Who's 'Tommy'" last year and had three or four band rehearsals.)

Usually, I'm the feller with the electric bass (a Peavey knockoff of a Fender Jazz and either an old, beat-up Crate amp or a Peavey half-stack), but I've brought my 1954 Kay upright in, as well as a guitar or two.

It's pro-bono work, of course... but the learning experience is invaluable. I've done everything from rock to classical and most stuff in-between there. It's been an incredible boost to my playing abilities and musical sense. And I've made some real friends there.

Currently, we're getting ready to do A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and then West Side Story.
