Tagged: 5 things I'd like to see in Opera

,

I was tagged again by DrLaunch. To see what it's all about, check the original post.

It's hard to think of five things as 9.22 seems to have fixed some things. But I'll try. Some of these might be Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris specific. Or just FreeBSD, I haven't been using Linux version of Opera much, so I can't really know.

1. better RSS reader (this could actually be divided to several separate improvements)

2. Maildir support in M2, so I can keep using other clients too.

3. Even better spatial keyboard navigation. Now it's hard to select some links that are not directly under another link.

4. Even better handling of the out of disk space situations and crashes. Though Opera is quite good at keeping sessions saved (and makes even backups of some files). Maybe Opera should even use the backup when original file is not recoverable.

5. Drag and drop in bookmarks menu. It's too much work to open the bookmark manager

Next victims are: omie, GaaraZanta, fluffybunny, Illidan and symphonied

Hi Antero,
Regarding to the first one, correct me if I am wrong, it seems to me My Opera altered the common RSS form to "Watch" next to "Spotlight", which I like very much. My Chinese blog with blog.yum.com in Taiwan also has a nice RSS feature which feeds all new updated posts of what a user has subscribed onto a separated webpage and a user can adjust how many posts of each subscribed blogger's work to be shown on RSS list. I find that kind of feature is very user friendly and so easy for a user to introduce/promote other users' blogs.

Watch is separate feature from RSS. You can see it only if you're browsing My Opera pages. RSS is the icon in addressbar (it can be found in the page too) and can be used in any RSS reader (though Opera doesn't make it easy). RSS reader can be separate program or part of the browser.

Both are nice features and in many ways similar. Follow the "better RSS reader" link if you want to know more.

Thanks. Antero, Now, I see what you mean. I like FireFox's RSS. I am using it but didn't realize that Opera browser doesn't have a better design. Embarrassingly, I didn't use Opera browser after my computer was reconfigured in this June.

Both Firefox and Opera are fine for small number of feeds, but fail when you really need to start organizing things.

Oh I never used RSS...

Should be partly possible by running with another profile that doesn't store history or cookies. Maybe even more effective would be to have script that would do something like this:

extract premade profile (if custom settings are needed) from archive to temporary_profile

opera -pd temporary_profile (sorry, not available on Windows)

(some browsing)

remove temporary_profile
