Gimp & Seperate+ = CMYK

Once i reported about the further development of the Seperate plugin: Seperate+, a nice addon to export Gimp images into the CMYK color space. After my Ubuntu Graphic Workshop i renembered the plugin (many people asked about Gimp & CMYK) and i revisited the site again: Taa-Taa Seperate+ 0.5.1 is available 
but not longer as a Linux binary 
.So i tried to compile it and for the first time i did it successful. Then go step by step of this Deb-Making-List (thanks to Simpsons-Fan) and created a Deb Archive of it:
gimp-seperate+-0.5.1-i386.deb
The plugin can be found at the menu of the image windows: "Image > Seperate".
You can get nice CMYK color profiles by installing the Ubuntu package "icc-profiles" and download color profiles of Adobe (copy them into ~/color/icc).
How its works:
* Open your RGB image in Gimp via "File > Open"
* Start Seperate+ "<Image Window> > Image > Seperate > Seperate"
* Setup the profiles, may as source "Adobe 1998" and as destination profile "Euroscala V2"
* Press OK, an image with 4 layers is created
* Each layer represents a color channel of CMYK
* Now save the image as CMYK Tiff at "<Image Window> > Image > Seperate > Save..."
Update:
Check out my Sepearte+ addon "CMYK Tiff 2 PDF for Gimp" to and read the post about color profiles too. The Seperate+ plugin is bundled with Ubuntu 8.10 and higher, just install the package "gimp-plugin-registry".

ganz verstanden habe ich das plugin noch nicht, die installation hat aber wie erwartet vollkommen reibungslos funktioniert :)
ein großer Fan bin ich schon jetzt vom save-for-web plugin. da wurde ich an die komfortable funktion proprietärer software erinnert, die ich schon wieder vergessen hatte.

But now with the separate-plug I'm just loading the images and it works fine right out of the box...
Sorry that I couldn't make it to your workshop, I know I would have loved it. But there's always another chance...

Converting images from CMYK to RGB, then again to CMYK is really destructive. Even CMYK to CMYK is destructive, because it is first converted to Lab. Keep an RGB profile as long as you can, you just need a good color control. Better with ECI recommandations: http://www.eci.org/doku.php?id=en:start

- Also Profile z.B. Adobe 1998 und Euroscala V2 wählen
- OK
- CMYK-Bild in Farbkanälen wird erzeugt
- mit Bild > Sepearte > Save als CMYK-Bild speichern

Hallo Eckhard,
kann ich deine deb auch unter 64bit nutzen, habe es versucht aber es scheint nicht zu funktionieren und ein remove geht auch nicht mehr weil er das Paket gar nicht findet. Schade ist genau das was ich gerade suche um es an die Druckerei weiter zu leiten.
by the way, sollte ich lieber in Englisch schreiben, ist das gewünscht?

deutsch ist schon ok. Ich weiß nich ob 32-Bit plugins unter einem 64-Bit GIMP funktionieren. Ich kann Dir gerne einfach ein Binary zur verfügung stellen das Du dann nach "~/.gimp-2.4/plug-ins/" kopierst.

hab es gerade ausprobiert, download und installation dank .deb ohne probleme. wollte nun ein bild umwandeln und bin lt. anleitung vorgegangen. nun hab ich das von rgb in cymk bild, aber leider in graustufen. was hab ich da falsch gemacht?

In Gimp ist es immer ein Graustufenbild aber wenn Du es speicherst dann werden aus den vier Graustufenebenen C,M,Y,K ein CMYK-Tiff
Kann man dann auch als PDF umwandeln:

Kann mir jemand sagen ob das Seperate Binary auch mit Gimp 2.6 funktioniert? Habe es in ~/.gimp-2.6/plug-ins/ kopiert aber unter dem Menüpunkt "Bild" ist nichts zu sehen.

also bei mir unter Ubuntu Hardy funktioniert es mit Gimp 2.6. Wichtig ist das die Dateien bei den Zugriffsrechten auf "Als Programm ausführen" gesetzt sind (Häckchen unten).

ja ausführbar sind die beiden Dateien (seperate seperate_import).
Ich nutze Intrepid mit Gimp 2.6.1. Ich vermute das es wohl an meiner 64bit Version liegt. Mal schauen wie ich das kompiliert kriege.

machs Dir ganz einfach
- lösche die Dateien bzw. deinstalliere das Paket
- installiere das Pakket gimp-plugin-registry
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/gimp-plugin-registry
In diesem Paket ist es bei Ubuntu sowieso dabei

Danke Eckhard, dieses Paket kannte ich noch gar nicht, werd ich jetzt mal testen.
Mal am Rande, kommt am Ende wirklich etwas brauchbares für den professionellen Druck dabei raus, also kann ich das ner Druckerei geben?

Ja da kommen wirklich gute Ergenisse raus, hängt natürlich auch vom Farbprofil ab welches man benutzt. Neben den Farbprofilen von Ubuntu (Paket icc-profiles) kann man zusätzlich welche von Adobe benutzen (nach ~/.color/icc/ entpacken):

The Update notion needs to be updated a bit as the mentioned package "gnome-plugin-registry" should be "gimp-plugin-registry".

ich stehe irgendwie völlig auf dem Schlauch. Das Separate+ Plugin hab ich installiert, funktioniert auch wunderbar. Was ich nicht verstehe, ist, wie ich das cmyk-tiff-to-pdf tool installieren kann, also die .py Datei, dich ich heruntergeladen habe. Bin absoluter Newbie und sehr dankbar, wenn Du mir das erklären könntest...

Ich bin mit Windows Vista (Home Premium, Service Pack 2) geschlagen. Habe allerdings Python (=.py?) nicht installiert. Ist meine Vermutung richtig bzw. reicht es dann, mir Phyton herunterzuladen und die .py-Datei funktioniert dann als "Standalone"?

Never mind, I've found it, but I'm still not able to load images, that are already in CMYK mode, with gimp. I am trying to use a template for a business card layout, and it is in CMYK, which will be necessary for a quality print. I'm just unsure of what to do. Thanks again.
