The Gnome Color Management project has now it's own website. GNOME Color Manager is a session framework for the GNOME desktop environment that makes it easy to manage, install and generate color profiles. They integrated ArgyllCMS for calibrating devices. A lot of the progress and the details can be found on Richard Hughes blog too.

Normally for webdesign it is better to use an uncalibrated screen because most people use Windows or have an uncalibrated screen too. The only fact for using a calibrated screen as a webdesigner is to correct issues from display (like i did on my Dell Studio which ships notebook with to much green).
So what kind of graphic card and Linux distribution you use?

Just imagine that you would always produce websites with far too saturated colors, just because the designers display rendered them a little bit pale. And if uncalibrated user Foo uses one of those oversaturated "Gamer"-LCDs he would be blinded by screaming shiny colors. Minus plus minus doesn't seem to become positive in this case.

P.S.: Gnome Color Managment got Scanner support too!

Imagine you calibrate your display and design website that use lighter colors and dark colors but most people see just black and white. So lightgray boxes doesn't appear and dark blue fonts looking just black.
Calibration isn't always a benefit, that is my experience. The best way is just compare your work on different uncalibrated screens.
