RawTherapee 2.4 Milestone 2

After the first step ahead to RawTherapee 2.4 now 2nd milestone is reached:
* Caching of thumbnails: file browser is now faster than ever
* Ranking in file browser
* Filter by EXIF
* Move to trash/ delete permanently/ rename functionality in file browser
* Separating the core and the GUI for a better future development
* Several bugfixes

The bad news: no download available this time, just a status report.

Gimp 2.6 in July?

It rumors that the final of Gimp 2.6 will be available this month. I do not know the truth especially we hadn't a official announcement of 2.5.2 yet. At Gimpusers.com you will find a first summery about what's new in Gimp 2.6.

When i looked around what happened in Gimp development i read that the first addition additions to Gimp 2.5.2 has been arrived. Sven Neumann posted in his blog a screeny of the Online Help feature too.

Some weeks ago i wrote a post about the beginning of Gimp 2.5.1, now this development version is official released. During that time again a lot of new features and improvement were added.

Besides the development of Gimp 2.6 a bugfix release of the Gimp 2.4 series is available. Gimp is a feature rich image editor with a functionality similar to Photoshop.
All changes of Gimp 2.4.6 are listed in the news file. Users of Ubuntu Linux can download a Deb package too.

The work on the way to Gimp 2.6 goes on and so there are a bunch of new features added to the Gimp 2.5.x development version.
It seems 2.5.1 is not completly ready yet, so there are no source downloads available.

Krita 2 and Karbon14 2 alpha

Today the KOffice project released the 7th alpha of KOffice 2 including the image editor Krita 2 and the vector drawing app Karbon14 2. In this alpha Krita brings a new plugin architecture. Of course the alpha 7 includes a lot of bugfixes too.

Lightzone 3.5 for Linux

Light Crafts has released Lightzone 3.5, a professional photo editor supporting 16bit image depth editing for RAW and HDR images, for Linux. You can download a trial too.

First milestone of RawTherapee 2.4

Based on a lot of bug reports the DevTeam reaches the first milestone of RawTherapee 2.4:
* Full EXIF support & EXIF Browser
* IPTC tag support
* More input ICC profile options
* A new highlight recovery method
* Histogram now corresponds to cropped area
* Runtime theme switching
* Lots of other minor bugfixes und Tweaks

More details at the RawTherapee website. You can download this milestone too. Any bug and suggestion can be reported at the forum.
RawTherapee is not open source but you can specify yourself what you like to donate to the author.

Pixel Beta8 goes 64bit

Pavel Kanzelsberger, the developer behind Pixel, has announced that Beta 8 is coming soon and will be available as a 64bit version too. To make sure Beta8 is stable for daily work it took a little bit more time then expected.
Pixel is a commercial Photoshop-like image editor for Linux, MacOS X and Windows.

Gimp 2.5 first view

There is a first development snapshot of Gimp 2.5 available and some screens about it. You can download this unstable version and read the complete list of changes.
besides this good news of Gimp development the Gimp User Manual is updated to version 2.4.1 and is available for download too.

The Wine development is fast these days, again a new version is available. The good news for design and 3d people are "Support for multiple OpenGL pixel formats" and "Improved support for color profiles".
If you using Ubuntu there is a repository and a .deb packages archive to get the newest version.

You can tweak the Wine GUI too to give it a more Ubuntu styled look.

Google Funds Work for Photoshop on Linux

Google has hired Codeweavers, which are the leaders of the Wine project and offering commercial services around it. Codeweavers should add better support for Photoshop on Linux. Since Wine 0.9.54 there are much improvements that let running Photoshop CS2 under Wine. This patches has nice side effects, so Flash 8 is working well too.
If you using Ubuntu there is a repository and a .deb packages archive to get the newest version.

You can tweak the Wine GUI too to give it a more Ubuntu styled look.

Besides Lightzone a very fine imageging software for photographers is RawTherapee. It's now release as version 2.3 with new features like:
