Last week the Libre Graphics Meeting 2008 took place in Wroclaw (Poland). Now video streams of the LGM conference, presentations and workshops are available online.

Phatch - Photo Batch Processor

Today the Libre Graphics Meeting 2008 starts in Warsow (Poland). I visited the website and looking through the schedule table. There i found Phatch a photo batch processor. Phatch is an standalone alternative to David's Batch Processor that works only inside of GIMP.
Ubuntu Linux ships with it, you just have to install the package "phatch". If you looking for a mass renaming utility take a look at pyRenamer.

There are a lot of sites presenting you funny or horrible pictures - no deal. But to find something interesting and inspiring is quite hard. Two days ago i sit together with Nic in front of the screen and discovering two hours long FFFFOUND! - deal!

First milestone of RawTherapee 2.4

Based on a lot of bug reports the DevTeam reaches the first milestone of RawTherapee 2.4:
* Full EXIF support & EXIF Browser
* IPTC tag support
* More input ICC profile options
* A new highlight recovery method
* Histogram now corresponds to cropped area
* Runtime theme switching
* Lots of other minor bugfixes und Tweaks

More details at the RawTherapee website. You can download this milestone too. Any bug and suggestion can be reported at the forum.
RawTherapee is not open source but you can specify yourself what you like to donate to the author.

eLearning, video tutorials and screencasts

Those who looking for a solution creating video tutorials or screencasts should try out Salasaga (formaly known as Flame Project). A Deb package for Ubuntu Linux is available too.
Or download the binaries of Wink 1.5 for Linux. Both solution will creating suberp Flash videos and allowing more then a simple capturing like xvidcap does.

Photoline 14.51

If you are missing features in Gimp and didn't like to pay a lot for Photoshop you should definitely tryout Photoline. It's powerfull and stable as Photoshop itself, has the best PSD file support i ever saw and it is really cheap.
The only bad thing is you need Wine to get it running on Linux. At the moment i getting some problems with the icons of the toolbars and sometimes the cursor is not visible. I think this could be fixed soon when a new stable version of Wine is available.

UPDATE: I added a bug report to the bugzilla of the Wine project.

F-spot 0.4.3

F-Spot, a full-featured personal photo management application with a modern interface, is official released as 0.4.3. It shipped with many bugfixes and some feature enhancements:

I love F-Spot and i'm happy to read that there will be nice improvements as a Summer of Code project featured by Google. Ruben Vermeersch will improve the sidebar like some mockups of Jimmac shows :smile:.

Google Picasa 2.7 for Linux

The final version of the photo management software Picasa 2.7 for Linux is available. Now you can import images from your disk and publish them in the web. Besides this long awaited feature Picasa 2.7 for Linux offers:
* a better and faster import of images
* added support for the cameras Canon EOS 30D and Nikon D200
* support for Adobe DNG format
* bigger previews
* better search for camera details like ISO or focal values
Video support is still missing in the Linux version. Renember Picasa is not a native Linux application, its ported to Linux using the Winelib. You can download it for various distributions including Debian/ Ubuntu.

besides this good news of Gimp development the Gimp User Manual is updated to version 2.4.1 and is available for download too.

Deskew 1.1 plugin for Gimp

Deskew, also called auto straighten, is the automatic rotation of an image such that the text is vertically aligned. Now released as version 1.1 - looks great!
A Deb archive for Ubuntu Linux is available too. Deskew will appear in "Filters > Misc > Deskew".

GREYCstoration 2.8 plugin for Gimp

GREYCstoration is a Gimp plugin for image denoising and interpolation, using state-of-the-art image processing techniques. It offers really cool, denoised and sharp results of noisy and artifacted images (check out the demo images).
Just download the 2.8 zip archive from the website and copy the "GREYCstoration_gimp_pc_linux" file into "~/.gimp-2.4/plug-in/". The filter can be found at the Gimp Image Window in "Filter > Enhance > GREYCstoration".

FX Foundry 20080323 update

The FX Foundry, a collection of effect scripts for the image editor Gimp, has updated there package (20080323) again. And they have a new website now which gives you an better overview about the package.

The Wine development is fast these days, again a new version is available. The good news for design and 3d people are "Support for multiple OpenGL pixel formats" and "Improved support for color profiles".
If you using Ubuntu there is a repository and a .deb packages archive to get the newest version.

You can tweak the Wine GUI too to give it a more Ubuntu styled look.
