Krita 2 and Karbon14 2 alpha

Today the KOffice project released the 7th alpha of KOffice 2 including the image editor Krita 2 and the vector drawing app Karbon14 2. In this alpha Krita brings a new plugin architecture. Of course the alpha 7 includes a lot of bugfixes too.

Pixel Beta8 goes 64bit

Pavel Kanzelsberger, the developer behind Pixel, has announced that Beta 8 is coming soon and will be available as a 64bit version too. To make sure Beta8 is stable for daily work it took a little bit more time then expected.
Pixel is a commercial Photoshop-like image editor for Linux, MacOS X and Windows.

A nice Gimp theme

I created a Gimp theme that is based on the normal Tango look but has big icons at toolbox but small text and small dock icons. So this is not icon eyecandy but improves the workflow and available space much.
You can download it here. Copy the 'area42' folder into '~/.gimp-2.4/themes', start Gimp and select the area42 theme in your preferences.

gThumb 2.10.6 is released now, just bugfixes and minor improvements.
What i'm really missing is support of more file formats. While this didn't change i prefer XnView.

After canceling Beta 7, Pavel Kanzelsberger has published a new beta 7 pf the image editor pixel. This new beta is merged with new stuff of the upcoming beta 8.

Pixel - no Beta 7

Pavel Kanzelsberger has posted on the Pixel website that there is no Beta7 of thie image editor Pixel. Because of endless troubles with this release it was skipped and he will directly release Beta 8 in near future.
He posted a first screenshot of Beta 8 on MacOS X. Beta 6 is still available for download.

  • Added the ability to manually specify photo print sizes.

Well Qtpfsgui is updated to version 1.6 now. I found a new plugin called HDR tools in the Gimp plugin registry too. That's are nice addons to Blender which is able using HDR images for lightning.

Working with RAW images and Gimp

My brother got a brandnew very, very powerfull Nikon digital camera and ask me how to work with Gimp and RAW images. There are several plugins in the Plugin Registry of Gimp but UFRaw looks best at all.
On the project page they got binaries for several systems too!
Here is the list of supported cameras. UFRaw is available as a standalone application too.
