How can sober houses help you recover completely

, , , ...

Traditional alcohol and drug rehabilitation is ideally followed by a stay in sober houses which offer temporary and transitional living accommodation for recovering patients, who are looking for support during this very crucial phase of rehabilitation. The aim being to relearn life skills and indulge in healthy activities, often a group of such patients live together and are called a sober living community. Typically, sober living homes are low budget especially when seen in context of their success rates and advantages. On being discharged from a rehabilitation facility, having been treated for alcohol or drug addiction, the patients are nervous and unsure of themselves. They understand that it would now on be a daily struggle to avoid the triggers that take them towards alcohol or drugs. They know they are susceptible and weak and hence are required to be under supervision and more importantly in good company. Sober Houses are the safe havens for such patients and the difference between a stable and sober life to getting addicted once again. Getting rid of addiction is a process where in lay mans terms an effort is made to reprogram the patient’s brain thereby firstly removing or curtailing reasons or triggers of stress and then train the patient in coping with stress. A sober living home provides the support, guidance. Emotional recovery and encouragement required to enable a patient to continue his recovery. All sober living homes are created to provide the patients under recovery similar goals to maintain ones sobriety, living healthy and continuing rehabilitation. The presence of likeminded people with same set of problems at various stages works like a support mechanism, giving residents the option of a group effort in solving individual problems, giving the patient the feeling that he is not alone or unique. In addition the staffs of sober houses are available to provide additional support and services when most needed. The recovery time for each inmate is different. It depends on the level of addiction and mental state. Such a recovery should not be rushed or compared with others. All patients however are seen to benefit from the extra support and nurturing they get in great abundance in sobering homes. The treatment at such homes is structured and all patients are required to participate in activities in groups so that there is adequate interaction and inter mingling. All residents are also required to take alcohol and drug tests at random, as also follow the laid down rules and regulations, which are designed to ensure that there are no discipline issues and that safety and comfort of all is ensured. The stress of all the homes is on teaching constructive activities to inmates which keep them substance or addiction free. Many such facilities have 10 to 12 step programs to address the need of each inmate. Individualized programs are also made to address the needs of special patients. A sober living facility is an important and crucial part of the rehabilitation process after addiction treatment, and can lead a patient from addiction to a healthy and happy life.
