Covais In Over McKinney- Seriously Give me a Break- the Buffer finalists!

This Article is Owned and Written by: Arne

I am sure, certain and most positive that when Ryan Seacrest announced that Kevin Covais was in the final twelve and that the final spot was between Gedeon McKinney and Bucky Covington; that I was not the only one that was dumbfounded, shocked, speechless and dismayed as are many people! I felt there would be an upset (my previous article on American Reality TV) but I did not think it would be with Kevin Covais. I thought if anyone may have pulled an upset in the guys round it would have been Will Makar not Kevin Covais. Seriously, Kevin bombed in the final sing off, Starry Night had no light to his performance at all!

At times when I write my articles, I go to other outside influences to seek other people's interpretations outside of my own. Namely the people in my community, other family members, friends and neighbours. I asked them Thursday Night and Friday, what were their thoughts on the Covais upset over McKinney. The people I spoke to range from ages of 14- 71 and come from diffent backgrounds in mainstream society. The consensus was diverse. Some thought that it was fixed!!! Others had said they obviously want a guy to win this year, specifically a Caucasian guy ! Others felt the judges spent too much time adoring and puffing up Kevin to be more talent then he was. While other people said that he obviously appealed to a larger audience then anyone originally thought! Finally, some people thought the Covais Clan and friends over voted, pulling him into the unearned top final spot! As I stated in a previous article it is more then the targeted teen audience that watches American Idol and votes. Perhaps the famed Granny and middle age vote got Kevin In.

Reflecting on the different views of this upset, I thought about past Idol shows. The question I was putting a lot of thought into was the following: Was this more of a bias on race and wanting a Caucasian male to win the idol title or was it that Kevin Covais had more people over voting for him then Gedeon McKinney? . The past idol shows point to the fact that there have been other finalists that people thought should not have made the top twelve. For example if we look at race and color, many people did think that Jon Stevenson should not have made it. Then when Jon Stevenson ousted Latoya London, many people were yelling prejudice including Sir Elton John. Many felt and still feel today that Lisa Leushner was robbed when Matt Metzger won the final spot. So the question remains why? Why has a obvious talent who had rightfully earned his spot now at home instead of the lesser talent in Kevin Covais. From the past idol final twelve unveilings to the most recent final twelve unveiling, has a talent like Gedeon been ousted over lesser talents like Kevin Covais? For that matter why was Patrick Hall and Sway Penala ousted over Kevin, Will and David?

I think it is a combination of many attributes of the reason why they were booted. One there are still some remnants of obvious distasteful discrimination in America! Having said that the majority of Americans ARE NOT PREJUDICE, but the fact that anyone can vote more then once is the reality of why we have these upsets in my opinion. The past idol shows indicate that race or discrimination is not the biggest attribute, because it is only the few ignorant that Western society has to contend with. Those few are not representative of American or Western society thought, they are actually in the MINORITY, when it comes to that type of thinking! However, the most prominent and viable reason more talented singers are ousted without color being an influence is because the voting system is unfair! American Idol has long had the very same problem with their voting system.

They allow for more then one vote from the same households. This is because they want to project that they have a total of 43 and 47 million votes. If you notice only on one night did host Ryan Seacrest share with the viewers what their rating was, he normally shares with us how many have voted! The voting system has been an issue in the past; it is an unfair voting system. It allows and encourages people to have more then their share of votes. So on any given night there could be an upset and the more talented singers are ousted over ridiculous talent! It is up to American Idol to fix their voting system. If they are going to allow more then one vote, then they should at least limit it to a reasonable number of times per contestants. The more talented singers being booted are not reflective of a ‘TRUE VOTE” THAT IS EQUAL AND FAIR!!!

Gedeon McKinney was not ousted because of his weird smile, because he was considered odd by Simon, and so on and so forth, he lost because of an unfair voting system in place! If we are going to go on these non-plausible excuses then I am afraid the most of America is at risk when it comes to the word, Weird!!!! I have always asked what is a person’s definition of weird. In my own opinion, weird can be defined as something, an act, and action, gesture that another does not understand, so they categorize and classify it with Weird! If a person is considered weird and is the reason why Gedeon lost, then at the same token, Simon Cowell should not have made it or been as successful as he has been. Simon’s character, responses and some actions can be considered by some as weird. Equally, I think if we really take a good look at ourselves and are honest, each of us can say we have in part a streak of weird character in ourselves!

It was unfair voting, some may of voted based on their own personal profound discrimination, were others just liked Kevin to like him, some listen to the judges as if they were speaking the word of gospel, were others thought Gedeon was weird. Many will continue to say it was fixed! No matter what our diverse views are, the American Idol voting system should be looked at and fixed!!!

I also think that Kevin is a buffer, for American Idol because he will be going next week. The Gedeon McKinney fans votes will be allocated elsewhere and it will not be for Kevin Covais. At the same token the Aayla Brown, Kinnick Sky and Will Makar votes will also be allocated elsewhere, it will be dependent on how those fans feel about any given finalist.

Melissa McGhee also pulled off and upset over Aayla Brown! However, I also had thought that Melissa gave one of the best performances ( my previous article on American Reality TV) on the final sing off where Aayla’s was not as enjoyable. I did feel upset for Aayla, but honestly, she did not do well in her performance. She is more of a talent then she gave us. Aayla is young, she has a lot of time to pursue her dreams and make it.

American Final Twelve are:

1.Taylor Hicks, 2.Paris Bennet,
3. Chris Daughtry, 4. Lisa Tucker,
5.Bucky Covington, 6. Melissa McGhee,
7. Ace Young, 8. Mandisa,
9. Elliott Yemin,10. Kelly Pickler,
11. Katherine, McPhee 12. Kevin Covais.

Congratulations to the twelve finalists.

I really get riled about the racism charges for when Jennifer Hudson (not LaToya) was outed - they always neglect to note that 5 whiite people were eliminated before a single black person was voted off - no this is not a racist rant from me, just the way things were spun in the news rant.

Why Jennifer lost -
1. She was not praised very much by the judges, in fact they frequently insulted ebven her better perfomances
2. There were more women left than men at that point so people voting just for guys and the tweenies who thought that John Stevens was cute and the people who wanted an old time singer were voting for him. The only other guy was George Huff and he seemed older than his age, not young.
3. There were 2 other women who appealed to the same demographic as Jennifer - Black Woman Belter/diva - Fantasia and LaToya - they were praised more often than not and they split the diva vote.

Why Gideon was voted off
1) he received little screen time before the show and what was shown portrayed him as egotistical - Most people don't realize that what they see is heavily edited to show a dramatic point, they take it as fact
2) he was not praised much by the judges, he was called old fashioned, he was not portrayed as young, the boy was only 17!! and seemed a lot more mature than many of his fellow performers - It did seems as if the judges wanted him off - many people vote forthe person that the judges told them was good - they are called "sheeple".
3) He had an odd way of talking that did not seem friendly or young - probably inexperience with cameras.

This of course is your diverse opinion! But not representative of the general population!! Thanks for your comment.

FYI, yes I know Jennifer Hudson was ousted, but Jennifer Latoya was ousted before Jon Stevenson!!!

Just an added note, on the other side of things, others can argue that there is not as many!!! afro american, hispanics, ect.... that even go to Hollywood! ASwell as Sway is not caucasion!

Again thanks for your comment!

There is a website devoted to encouraging people to vote for the worst on AI. That probably is why Kevin got more votes. As with Scott last year, Kevin could be around for way tooooooo long.

cheers

I too am sick of those who say it's a racial thing every time a black person loses. As far as I'm concerned, the worst choice ever made on American Idol was when Reuben beat Clay, but you didn't hear people crying that Clay lost because he was white!! Gimme a break. This has nothing to do with race.

Sherri,

Did you read my article clearly? I don't think you did. If you had, you would of known that I was expressing the opinion of many people with many diverse views, including those that said that Kevin obviousley had a bigger fan base then some anticipated. Please read the article.

Yes people were crying and arguing when Clay lost, and there was an argument on race. Except it was more put on Ruben. They went on and on and on about it!

You have not read the article clearly. Thanks for your comment anyhow.

(quote) I think we should take the power away from the whole American Idol voting system by teaching them a lesson in season 5.

It is a good way of critical thinking, but the judges have the final say, so if Kevin were to make it to the final two sing-off( which I don't think will happen) he still wouldn't win. The reason the judges have the final say and possibley sony, is that they anticipate good sales upon the release of the idol winner's CD.

I think they do need to limit how many times a household can vote. One of the longstanding arguments of those that vote more then once, is that there is more then one person in the household. So let's say they limit it to 10 times per competitor, then that would be more reasonable to me, then someone that votes 121 times for one person. It would give each competitor equal opportunity and would give the fans equal opportunity to vote in their favorite. The other long standing argument is that many people cannnot get through to even cast one vote, so they feel that the over voters are hogging the lines, and that not everyone gets to have their vote or share of votes. If they would limit the number of votes, it would not hinder or reduce the number of votes they experience, if anything it would increase the number of voting and also be the voting concensus of the american idol viewer population.

If anything, American Idol would have more votes to brag about and the winner would be reflective of a true voting of who America thought should be the winner.

I suppose that that is where some of the over voters come from. thanks for your comment and information.

While I do agree that prejudice unfortunately exists, I do not agree that race is an issue in this case. What Kevin had that Gideon lacked is the cutesy factor. Simon called it when he said something to the effect of Kevin being like a little puppy dog. Gideon didn't have this. Did I feel that pull toward Kevin? Yes, but I didn't act on it because this is a singing competition and I do not want to suffer through another John Stevens, Nikki McKibbon, etc... this year. I'm sure there are many who did act on that impulse though and it's very unfortunate. I'm happy with the top 6 guys this year except for Kevin. I voted for Gideon who is a very talented singer, along with the other five who got through. Of the females the only one I vote for is Mandisa. The rest bore me except for Kellie and she falls short in the voice department. Mandisa is not only a talented singer but also has natural charisma and great performance skills. I am caucasion. Race does not play a part in the way I vote. I think another major factor with the hanger ons such as John Stevens and Jasmine Trias is sympathy. Simon was often very harsh with these individuals and I think people felt sorry for them and threw them extra votes. I still recall the night he made Jasmine cry. I just think a lot of different factors effect the voting and it's impossible to really analyze it and come up with a clear cut answer. If there was we caould all just predict the winner from the get go and there would be no reason for the show.

Gedeon's smile freaked me out. He wasn't a half bad singer though. Kevin Covais may be the Scott Savol of this season. Makes it through to the final 5 or 6 lacking any real talent. Gedeon wasn't a Top 6 player, though. On raw talent and ability my top 6 predictions are as follows: Paris Bennett, Mandisa Hundley, Katherine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry and Elliot Yamin. I give Ace the snub at 7. That is as it should be. My final 3 : Chris, Taylor and Mandisa. From there, I will wait and see.

I think that Lisa Tucker is talented and underrated by the Judges. She comes every week and gives an excellent peformance in my opinion and all they can do is talk about the fact that she is 16 and needs to sing young songs! It reminds me of Diana Degarmo, no matter what she did, it was dammed if you do and dammed if you don't by the judges, specifically Simon.

I can agree on that, sympathy can almost derail the more talented singers, and so can someone that is cute, pretty, handsome, good looking.

Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate the diffrent views from diverse people.

<<< Really in what way, it is the first time I heard of anyone that is generally happy and at peace with themselves being scrutinized. I heard of a person leering, a cold withdrawn smile, a smirk ect... freaking people out, but a genuine happy smile is a new one for me!

Thanks for your comments and your pick on who you think should be top Idol.

Well, Personally, Kevin should have been voted off just because his high school preformance of "Starry Night" was off key and sounded terrible. I feel like he was kept around for sport. He is cute but that is about it. On a prefessional level, I would love to have Gideon sing for me. I loved his smile. That shows confidence and that he is a very happy person. I also feel he has a great personality. God Bless him in his future. We have not seen the last of him.

Mandisa she is smokin everyone on American Idol.
Taylor your cool. I like to haer him sing and perform.
That's just my spill

<<< my two cents worth, I agree with you, there are a couple in the top twelve that are the buffer's for the final 10, Kevin is one of them. Thanks for your comment.
