Interesting celebratings for Olympic Games

When reading newspapers and magazines, surfing on the Internet, watching TV, I get some news concerning the coming Olympic Games in Beijing this year. What interest me are those news reporting diverse ways to call public attention to the great game.

Those gratuitous pluggers are visiting cities by cities; some are riding bikes carrying wooden carts, with the logo”one world one dream” on it; some are riding bicycles throughout the nation, they ask local post office or government to stamp on the papers or notebooks their perpared when arrive a city. On their way, they suffer all kinds of weather, meet lots of difficulties and dangers, but they are still happy for their actions, because they think that they’re not only doing this for themselves but for the nation and the game.
Some other people have done it in a strange way which I don’t like, that is to tattoo on their skin the pattren and logo of Olympic games. They must have borne great pain for it, do they think it’s worthy?
While there are still some interesting ways to publicize. There is a guy in Beijing refit his bicycle and makes it look like the symbol of the game. Just look at the pix, do you think it is interesting? I think he’s creative.
Also, the Olympic games have influenced countrysides. People living in suburb areas have done something to express their joy for the game. In their plantations, they grew coles in organized order thus the symbol of the five rings is showed in the field. One can enjoy wonderful view from from a high place.Of course, it attracts numerous visitors from all places.

It’s true that all Chinese people are excited as the Olympic game is getting closer. What they have done may seem a little strange and crazy but apprehensible and acceptable, thinking about their motives. So we just give it an understanding smile and accept it.

2008, the year of fate

The lunar year of 2008,is the year of RAT according to Chinese culture.
There are twelve different animal signs,鼠:Rat,牛:Ox,虎:Tiger,兔:Hare,
龙:Dragon ,蛇:Snfke,马:Horse,羊:Sheep,猴:Monkey,鸡:Cock,狗:Dog,猪:Boar,
each one for one lunar year. Different sign represents distinct meaning.
Every 12 years is a circle.
(Wanna know more? U gotta check it on line or come to me.)

Born in 1984,the year of RAT,I meet my second year of fate this year.
It's said that one would enjoy great luck or be enmeshed in misfortune.
One's fate would go to extremes in the year of same animal sign.

I konw RAT is not an pleasing animal both at home and abroad.
But I don't take it for granted that it will certainly bring me bad luck.
I know I'm going to meet big changes in 2008,but I will adjust my psychology
so to meet all the changes and seize chances.

In 1996,my first year of fate,I met great changes for thr first time in my life.
I moved to a new city and began a different life.Making new friends, learning something new,
life also taught me a tough and profound lesson. I became strong and independent at that time.
Tracing back to that period,I am still so grateful that I had the chance to meet changes,
for I'm not only changed, but changed for the better.

Now, another year of fate has arrived, I don't know what are waiting for me in the following days,
something good or something really bad.But I understand clearly that I'm meeting great changes right now, however, I'm looking forward to! I believe that I will make wonderful progress, too.

There are several years of fate waiting for me in the future, I wish I'll become a better person each time.

CET4&6! BIG EVENT!

Yesterday, it’s a big day for Engliah learners in China, except English majors. It was the day they took the College English Test Grade 4 and Grade 6. CET4 is much easier than CET6, one must pass CET4 so that one can take the CET6. In many universities and colleges, there is a role requires a student should at least pass CET4, if he/she fails to do that, they will fial to get the diploma, too. It is a disaster! That means the 4 years’ study comes to nothing finally, no matter how well the student may do in his/her own major.
Some of my friends, who are seniors now, still heve to take CET4 so to hunt a good job. That’s a good wish. But the point is they have been taking the same test for several in 4 years! Each time they can not pass it and count on next test. Most of them don't like English at all, they are just enforced to study English because it’s a required subject.
sometimes, I would think that is it really that necessary for a Chinese to learn English well?
Doing well in test doesn’t mean that one can communicate with English native speakers freely. Since one doesn't like English, why not learn another foreign language? I have a friend who did really dad in English learning, does a wonderful job in Japanese study.
Thus, I think it’s time to change our mind.English is not the only foreign language, since it doesn’t work on you, why not make a change? Maybe you will meet some great achievement.
p.s. I was shocked to see that soooooooooo many students are rushing into the teaching building before the start of the test. (But that's only one entrance of one building, there are several buildings ready fot the test.)

A Greek Tragedy-how do you think of this vedio?

Yesterday, my teacher showed us this vedio in our class--Appreciation of Greek Mythology.
It's hard for us eastern people to understand the meaning.
Why it's called A Greek tragedy?
In a sense,it expressed about feminism. How do you think of it?
Which scene showed this meaning?
Could you please write down you understanding here?
I have my own understanding, but I don't think it the best answer.
I want to understand it better.
If anyone write down a comment,I would be very grateful.

Change or changed

Few monthes ago,I read an article which was about adaption to new circumstance.
The hero of the article got a job in a big company, however,he found it hard for him to get used to the new position.
After monthes, he still worked like a new comer.
At last, his boss found out the thing, and told his administrator of HR:"Chang him or chang him."

At first, I couldn't figure out what the boss meant. Finally, I got it.
The man should change and adapt himself to the position. If not, he would be changed and replaced by another person.

In fact, lots of people experience the similar thing.
If trapped in that situation, one should take action to change oneself,or one would fall behind or be abandoned by time.

So,from then on, each time I met difficulties, I got myself alarmed with the question:"Change or changed?"

Fox Spirit in Chinese Literature

,

FOXES have been popular characters in Chinese fables for two millennia. They first featured in their original animal form before gradually taking on the persona of spirits, both benevolent and malevolent, in the guise of bewitchingly beautiful, charming young women.
Famous Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) writer Pu Songling’s stories about fox spirits in his well-known Strange Tales from Make-do Studio characterize them as beautiful creatures that embody the finest human virtues of fidelity, love, generosity, justice, and willingness to help others. Over the past three centuries, readers of Pu Songling’s work have come to refer to these characters as “fox angels” rather than “fox spirits.”

Women of the Dream World
Xiaocui is a charming fox spirit story in Pu Songling’s work. Xiaocui is lovely, vivacious fox spirit with the outward trappings of a beautiful young lady. One day, her fox mother takes her to the Wang household and steals away, apparently abandoning her daughter. Wang is a local official whose only son is mentally challenged. He has neither playmates nor marriage prospects, but Xiaocui befriends and later marries him. Although the Wangs initially love Xiaocui, her unruly ways antagonize them, and they often scold and upbraid her, but Xiaocui accepts this treatment with equanimity. When Wang is framed by his political enemies Xiaocui’s wisdom saves the family from disaster. She also cures her husband’s mental illness. But Xiaocui knows that her parents-in-law will never be able to accept her rebellious attitude towards the feudalistic conventions of the time. She finds a young woman that resembles her and arranges for her to take her place in the Wang household. Before stealing away, Xiaocui confesses to her husband that she is actually the daughter of a fox. Decades previously, her mother had sheltered from a thunderstorm under Wang’s robe as he himself took refuge from the storm in a temple. Although Wang had not been aware of the help he had given the fox mother, she felt beholden to repay him the kindness he had done her. It was for this reason that she left Xiaocui in his care.

Though some fox spirits are regarded as benign, there are some evil fox spirits.

Vituperative Vixen
[ Daji, heroine of Canonization of the Gods, exemplifies the evil fox spirit.
Daji is a fox spirit in the form of a beautiful young woman who is sent by the deity to bewitch King Zhou and bring about the downfall of the Shang Dynasty. Her reward is immortality.
This novel is a main reason why feminine charms are frequently equated with evil fox spirits, and why calling a woman a fox is generally intended as an insult.

The Classic of Mountains and Rivers, a geographic and mythical encyclopedia compiled more than 2,000 years ago, describes the fox as a nine-tailed, man-eating monster. The Shuo Wen Jie Zi(Explanation and Study of Principles of Composition of Characters), China’s first dictionary, written between 100 and 121 during the Eastern Han Dynasty, however, defines the fox as “a bewitching animal ridden by devils.”

It is probably a mixture of resentment and admiration that caused Chinese literature to portray the fox as alternately benign and evil.

My foreign teachers in university

In my university time, I have several native-speaker teachers, each of them gives me really deep impression.
When I was a freshman, Missy--a pretty Filipine lady, taught English Listening. She's known for her great anxiety for reading.Wherever she goes, she brings a book whit her,it is said.
There's another foreign teacher who taught me Oral English--Yvonne.She's a nice blonde with a sweet smile on her face all the time. She's a nice teacher and always kept her principles.
And also here's a guy who said he's 1/8 Chinese --Steward.However, he turned out to be the first foreign teacher that beat students in the class.Students carried out a students' strike,he got fired finally.

Then came the second semester,Rob ,my second Oral English teacher, gave me a deep impression with his humor.
And Steven, a guy always taught without textbook. He gave his Talkshow every class, but indeed he did interested us with what he knew about America.
And Barbara, a well-known foreigner as well as a honorary citizen in this city, impressed me with her seriousness, nonstop pursuit of truth. She ever tlod us in the class:"You don't kill time, time kills you." What a wise realization.

In the third semester, Gramham,a knowledgable man, taught us Selected Reading of Foreign Publications. One must be well-prepared or he /she would feel lost in Gramham's class. But,indeed, we learnt a lot in his class as well as from him.I maybe the one who benefited most from the class, for I set journalist as my career after graduation. He's back to Canada now,my classmates and I miss him very much.

I'm graduating within one year, I'm gonna miss my university and my life here very much. And part of the memory would be about my foreign teachers--those lovely people.

Looking forward to new blog post and meet you all again.

What a Huge Hot Pot

Southwestern China's Sichuan province is especially famous for its spicy cuisine, and the hotpot is just one of the favorites of the locals. On February 9th, a gigantic pot, dubbed the largest pot in China, made its debut in Chengdu city, capital of Sichuan province.

The hot pot, with a diameter reaching 12 meters, has six big pots in its center and 60 small pots surrounding it. Powered by electricity, the 2-meter-high pot can serve 80 to 120 dinners at once.

Chefs began preparation work on Thursday to cook the soup for use in the hot pot during the coming Wenshufang Temple Fair on Feb. 16. It's said that the nine tons of soup will need 3000 kilograms of oil, 1000 kilograms of chilis, 200 kilograms of peppers and 30 kinds of pungent herbs.

The owner says that they have already entered the one-million-yuan hot pot for a Guinness World Record.

Compared with the household hot pot as the image shows, how many people can the huge hot pot feed?
