In the last few days, I got a new toy to play with. It's not that very new actually, but a loaner where I need to return it to the owner in a week's time. Want to know what the toy is? Check the gallery . By the way, the album title "Old vs New" represents not only the new stuff but also the "Dinosaur" behind it. You know what I mean?

Cheers!

Suggestions welcomed!

Yo all! I'm gonna be very tight with my schedule in the next couple of days and wont be able to post on a daily basis.

If you have suggestions to be featured in this blog, please let me know. Like app review or tips for UIQ 3 or UIQ history, stuff like that. I really appreciate that

Have a nice weekend ahead! :D

Cheers!

Tracking your favourite stocks and weather... sounds interesting!

, , , ...

What is it actually? You need to find that out yourself. Journal Bar for Symbian UIQ 3 is now in early alpha stage and I can see it has some cool ideas behind it. However, the UI implementation is not following UIQ 3 style guideline and I found it hard to click on the tiny-weeny icons to select items. Considering that it was developed by Windows Mobile developers, I hope they will redesign the looks and feels of this app. Nevertheless, it's an interesting concept which will bring useful real-time information such as weather and stock market details directly into your UIQ 3 smartphones. Read some description about it after the screenshots... Tell me if you find this useful will ya!

Thursday Oct. 25th 2007. Mark your calendar everyone!

, , , ...

As you all probably knew by now, I'm a fan of Opera web browser. I love the current 9.24 desktop version and cant wait to see the finished future enhancement in the new alpha Kestrel 9.5. The fastest browser I've ever used. Period! On my P990, the default web is powered by Opera (although it's not as good as what I expected) and last but not least, Opera Mini which can be used in Flip Closed. I love Opera Browser!

Now here's the interesting part, if you are a user of Opera Mini 4 beta, there will be a new beta 3, scheduled to be launched this Thursday October 25th. Mark your calendar and dont miss this opportunity te experience the next step in mobile browsing.

Here's what the team have to say about the new Opera Mini 4 beta 3 :

The next step in mobile browsing

It's been a month and a half since we released the second beta of Opera Mini 4. People seem to be loving it. I wanted to give you all a quick update on what we've been working on in our labs.

Although we can't yet reveal too much, suffice it to say, we're continuing to work on ways to bring Web browsing on your mobile phone to the masses, while still having the absolute coolest technology out there. We've come up with something exciting, in which we think will take mobile browsing to a whole new level.

So what can you expect to see with the upcoming Opera Mini 4 beta? Well, I don’t want to spill the beans too early, but I will say the following: Mobile browsing is coming very close to the browsing on your computer. More to come at our Rock Opera event in San Francisco.

We're planning on releasing a new beta of Opera Mini 4 next week. The new beta is timed with the release of the Desktop 9.5 beta...

Honestly, I cant wait  ...

Palm OS app on UIQ smartphones are coming...

, , , ...

How does it feel to be able to run other OS inside your smartphone? Bet it's going to be a whole new experience aint it? Last week in the Symbian's Smartphone Show in London, there was an announcement about Styletap, which will bring more than 20,000 existing Palm OS applications into Symbian UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition unchanged. Yup, you read that right. 20,000 applications!

Wait a minute, how is that possible? A look into Styletap's website reveals it's existing solution available for Windows Mobile. Thousands of users already benefited from it. StyleTap CrossPlatform is compatible with most applications written for Palm OS® devices, and enables them to now run on Symbian smartphones. This gives consumers unprecedented freedom to choose the smartphone that meets their needs without losing their investment in mobile applications and accumulated data.

Personally, I find this exciting as well as spooky  If you know what I mean. There are a lot of great applications on Palm OS which are not ported to Symbian yet. For example, Natara Bonsai, a list manager with PC companion.

There's also some Palm OS app which have been ported excellently to Symbian like Dataviz's Documents To Go, DDH Software's HanDBase, and MobiMate's Worldmate. These are examples of applications which are carefully designed for the new platform.

And there's also some Palm apps which have been poorly ported to Symbian like Agendus for UIQ. Nowhere near the quality of the Palm version if you asked me.

I am excited to see how Symbian developer community will respond to this. Dont get me wrong, they have proven that they can produce excellent apps but in my opinion, many more work to be done in terms of providing high quality app to fill in the gap.

Styletap's solution is also interesting because it will attract Palm loyalists to choose Symbian. I know a friend who owns a couple of Palm Tungsten 3 and didn't choose Symbian because he's addictive to Palm's simple UI and powerful applications it has. In particular, applications to manage personal information like Agendus Pro.

I dont want to know the technical details behind it but I would really want to try it myself. However, it wont be available untill early next year.

For now, enjoy this video

Tell me, what Palm apps would you like to run in your UIQ 3 smartphones?

Waiting for a real zipper

, ,

If you received a zip file in your P990 or P1 (any UIQ 3 smartphones) email inbox? How do you open it? Let's say you're in a rush and your colleague just sent an important email with a couple of documents zipped in a zip or rar file, how do you resolve it? Chances are you wont be able to open the rar file directly inside your P1.

Well, honestly, there's no dedicated UIQ 3 app to handle zip, rar, and other compression itechnology like 7zip, ace etc. Sad but true...

If S60 users can use Handy Zip from Epocware (it is included out of the box!), why it's not been developed for UIQ 3 yet? Although Handy Zip is limited to Zip only, it's better than nothing aint it?

Despite the lack of applications for UIQ 3, actually, there's a solution to deal with compressed files. But it's not a standalone & dedicated app. X-Plore's LonelyCatGames can be used to open zip and rar files as well as create zips. It might not win in the design department but for extra functions, it's good to have something to be used when needed.

Another solution is using Malcom Bryant's Java app called jZip which is free and does what it says pretty much without fuss.

However, I encourage UIQ 3 developers to accept this challenge and develop a universal compressor/decompressor tool which functions like my preferred desktop tool 7Zip. It's fast, integrates very well with the system, doesn't eat lots of RAM when doing it's job and more importantly, gratis

Well, I felt a little bit weird when thinking about SE's UIQ 3 smartphones because surely it can do a lot but it also CANT do a lot, like unzipping files out of the box. Er... Can you call that smart? Can you call that real business tool? Please... Enlighten me...

Did you find any other zip tool for UIQ 3? Let me know ok.

Where's my finance manager app?

, , , ...

One of the reasons I am still using a Psion 5 mx was because it's applications. There are so many Psion apps that have not found them ways to modern smartphones. And I mean a lot. One of them is a unified finance manager where I can track expenses, forecast my budgets, monitoring my bank accounts and cash and more. Applications like ABP5, RMR Bank, 5Accounts and Money are among examples of this excellent programming showed by Psion communities more than 5 years ago.

For my personal use, I prefer Palmtop's (now TomTom) Money which is truly excellent in assisting me managing my financial life. It's a simple and powerful app. And supports exporting to other formats like CSV which can be imported into MS Excel for analysis. I've been using Money for years and havent found it's equivalent on Symbian neither UIQ nor S60.

There are some existing app for UIQ3 like Epocware's Handy Expense and Lubisoft's Outlay but they are designed to track expenses and spending only. Nothing more, nothing less.

If there's something close to a unified personal finance manager for UIQ 3, it's Malcolm Bryant's jABPlite. However, it's written in Java, eats a lot of RAM and the UI is slow. It does offer account management and everything else you could expect from a good personal finance management app but it doesn't belong to UIQ 3 in terms of intuitive interface and takes a lot of clicks to do simple operations.

This is another area where UIQ 3 developers can take note and look into. I hope they read this...

So guys, how do you manage your finance using your UIQ 3 smartphone? A spreadsheet?

Agendus for UIQ 3 is out! But...

, , ,

I'm not sure how I'm going to put my words on this. But for the sake of honesty and integrity, I will put it put for you guys anyway. Agendus is the holy grail of PIM app for Palm OS. If you dont use Agendus (or the Pro version) on your Palm OS device, I dont know how the hell you can live with the default Palm Calendar app. Agendus on Palm adds a lot of functions and improved usability as well as productivity. With it's very easy to use interface and linking to contact function (among others), it really shines.

But when Agendus is ported to UIQ 2 (Sony Ericsson P800 & P900 etc), it looked like a half baked application. It didn't follow UIQ application guideline and maintains Palm's way for text entry. And it is not as comprehensive as the Palm OS version. Why? Tom Bombadil may got the answer... :frown:

And now, the UIQ 3 version is just released. I was actually counting on it's release because UIQ 3 is more powerful than UIQ 2 in many ways. And because there was lack of powerful PIM alternative. But when I saw the screenshots of Agendus UIQ 3, I was totally disappointed. It seems that the developer took ported it from UIQ 2 in lock stock and barrel without even customising it for UIQ 3. The looks and feel of Agendus UIQ 3 is plain, boring and at the moment, buggy. For example, The font zooming doesnt work, hard to see information on the screen if you have many text displayed. And there's no full screen support. I can go on and on but this is not a review, only a teaser

Why Iambic didnt make Agendus UIQ 3 as powerful as the Palm OS version or if not, on the same level as the Windows Mobile version? D'oh! Even the Windows Mobile Smartphone version looks better. Dont get me wrong, Agendus UIQ 3 has some cool stuff inside like the weather plugin and also the quote-of-the-day plugin. And it's linking to contact feature is also cool, but AquaCalendar can do that! ...

Come on Iambic, you have proven in the past that you can revolutionise PIM on Palm, do that again on Symbian... please....

You guys have anything to say about Agendus? Share you thought here ok

Now let's wait for DreamLife, shall we?
