The UIQ Evangelist

This is UIQ Territory

Announcing www.uiqblog.com

,

All,
http://www.uiqblog.com
This is it folks. After months of posting using http://my.opera.com/asrialbaker/blog , The UIQ Evangelist has a new home now. A more flexible and customisable solution for more advanced features. The posts from the old blog has been manually imported using the ancient method of copy and paste. Painful it is but it must be done. And you can see all the posts previously available here are now available there.

Hence, this olde UIQ Evangelist will not be updated and all activities will be from the new URL. I thank all of you for the supports and please give your support to the new blog as well...

cheers!

UIQ 3 Download Manager & Bit-Torrent Client - When Can We See Them?

, ,

As UIQ 3 smartphones today are equipped with high-speed internet connection (GPRS, 3G, WiFi and whatever comes next), internet usage varies to the need of the users. Beyond internet browsing, emailing and instant messaging, what else do you do on your UIQ 3 smartphones that use the internet connection? Video call? Puhleeeaaassssseeeeeee ....

I am a bit-torrent user and I felt envious to those S60 3rd Edition smartphones users because they have this application called SymTorrent, a complete full fledged bit-torrent client which is a must for torrent freaks. I have tried it on an E61 on a WiFi connection and managed to get around 45 to 50 kbits download speed. Not bad...

Another app that UIQ 3 developers must start developing is a proper download manager to manage multiple downloads at the same time. With a download manager, there's no need to fire the web-browser to download stuff. Just copy the URL and paste it in the download manager and bamm!!! download starts. And make it better by tightly integrating it with the browser. Wont that be nice to have? Furthermore, sometimes, we DO receive download links in our emails right? And sometimes, in our SMS too!

On my iBook G4, I use an application called iGetter which does the job pretty well. It can download any URL pasted in it and it integrates well with Opera, Safari and Firefox.

What? SE Extends partnership with QuickOffice? Why not Dataviz's Docs To Go?

, , ,

According to this press release, a multi-year agreement between Sony Ericsson and QuickOffice has been signed to provide all future Sony Ericsson smartphones with QuickOffice, which they said is the leading provider of mobile office software and solutions. Pfffttt ...

Well, I beg to differ... Being a heavy MS Word and Excel user, I found that the bundled QuickOffice in SE UIQ 3 smartphones are not up to industry standard. Opening huge files is a problem, documents round-tripping is bad. Formatting and images are not displayed. And many more bugs and "features" that should not come from a company that has been around for ages, since the Palm OS days. If QuickOffice is serious in bringing it's solution forward, these problems should have been addressed via firmware upgrades but I have not seen it. It stays the same. QuickOffice on my P990 is one of those applications that I NEVER opened, NEVER used, and NEVER touched because of my BAD experience with it.

For me, the best solution for my DOC and XLS on my SE UIQ 3 smartphones is still, Dataviz's Docs To Go. No fuss, no worries. Documents stay the same no matter how many times been edited. It's not perfect, it has many niggles but not as bad as QuickOffice. At least, if my DOC files have embedded photos or diagrams in it, Word To Go can show them to me.

Yeah, many stuff have been added like the QuickManager and Office 2007 compatibility but do we UIQ 3 users really need them? Tell me, do you prefer QuickOffice over Docs To Go or the other way round?

DreamLife enters closed beta

, ,

You guys know how I love PIM apps especially when it's done with usability in mind. I've posted about DreamLife when it was first announced during this year's Smartphone Show and it is almost ready for primetime. For UIQ 3 users, the alternatives to the built-in Calendar are AquaCalendar and the recently announced (but utterly disappointing and poorly designed) Agendus. We dont have Handy Calendar or Papyrus or Agenda Fusion or Pocket Informant to toy around with. And to tell the truth, this is where I think some brilliant-minded Aussies in DreamSpring led by Malcolm Lithgow realised that the big hole needs to be filled in.

From what I understand, DreamLife is not only designed to enhance PIM experience but it also maked PIM more useful by integrating Contacts into it. Meaning, a calendar entry can be linked to a person in the contact database for more practical uses. This is not a new feature in PIM actually. Palm OS users have been using it for years on 3rd party PIM such as Agendus Pro. On UIQ 3 currently, the built-in Calendar doesnt have this function but if you use AquaCalendar, it's there.

For those who have registered as DreamLife betatesters, by this time, you should have received the SIS file and should active participating in the DreamLife forum in the official DreamSpring website.

Lets give them the support that they needed and together making DreamLife an application that all future UIQ 3 smartphones must be equipped with

UIQ Fast Track is over. DusanB reports

, , ,

Dusan Belic of Intomobile was lucky enough to attend UIQ Fast Track event in Budapest, Hungary and had some stuff to report to us as well. Here are the summary of his reports :

http://www.intomobile.com/2007/11/29/uiq-fast-track-keynotes-recap.html
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/11/30/uiq-fast-track-is-over-here-are-my-impressions.html

You have to visit all the links above to understand what really happens. As for me, I'm kinda felt left out because most Symbian/UIQ related events are held either in Europe or States and not South East Asia.... To UIQ PR Department... I've been blogging about UIQ stuff earlier than anybody else on the planet ... Hahahaha

MMPlayer (of Palm OS fame) now available for Symbian

, ,

The award winning MMplayer is a multimedia player with support for various media formats such as OGG, AVI, MP4, MPEG, etc. Previously available for Palm OS 5 only, it has now been ported to Symbian UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition. Head over to its official web site for more information and download.

- MMPlayer is a media player currently available for Palm OS5 and Symbian devices. It's capable of playing many standard audio and video files.
- Makes it possible to compress an entire 2 hours movie with a quite acceptable quality into a 128 Mb memory card and watch it on the road.
- Supports fullscreen on both landscape and portrait devices. (the screenshots on this page are in window mode, not fullscreen)
- Rotates and zooms the video to make full use of available screen area.
- Supports MJPEG, making it possible to shoot a video clip with many low end digital cameras with memory card, insert the card into your device and watch it.

My review of Easy Search UIQ 3 is published in AAS

, , ,

Those of you who longed for a universal search utility for UIQ 3 smartphone, should rejoice because you can enjoy Easy Search and frankly, I like it very much and it's one of those apps where you will use it when you really need it. Head over to AllAboutSymbian to read my thoughts about it. Definitely recommended

Linkboy 1.30 released - with lots of enhancements

, , ,

I followed the development of this app closely and I must say that what the developer (CellphoneSoft) did was really impressive. Linkboy is essentially an application launcher or shortcuts if you prefer... to launch not only applications but some other things as well like Control Panel stuff without going to dig into the Main Menu (Application Launcher) and opening Control Panel to find the stuff that we want.

This one is taken straight from it's official website describing the new version :
LinkBoy provides up to 45 shortcuts to frequently used tasks, that can be displayed as executable icons on the standby screen. Shortcuts are available for the full range of applications, phone settings, multimedia files, web pages, contact actions, and common tasks. All key functions of the built-in standby screen are left intact by LinkBoy.

NEW in version 1.30:
-Three independent sets of shortcuts.
-Full functionality in flip closed mode of the P990.
-Active shortcut types that display calendar events, memory status, or sticky note.
-Function shortcut types to switch between shortcut sets, or hide the icon panel.
-Enhanced customization of icon panel appearance.
-Numerous additional features, improvements and bugfixes.

Check it out!!!

Desktop Agenda - A Today plugin on the standby screen!

, , ,

One of the 'missing link' in UIQ 3 applications is the display of calendar stuff on the main screen. Especially in the P990. In Sony Ericsson's UIQ 3 smartphones, the main screen is called 'Activity Menu'. Dont ask me why... However, on M600, W950, P1 & W960, the Activity Menu is improved, you can configure them to display some calendar stuff together with other infos.

Out of nowhere, Ares in his post in My-Symbian.Com forum submitted a link to a small application called Desktop Agenda which IMHO, adds real value to P990's standby screen. It's actually a small app (the SIS file is only 29kb!). It reads the built-in database and displays them on the standby screen. here's how it looks like :

The setting is truly a no brainer. Even a schoolkid can configure it. For P990 users, it even works in FC mode. However, since this app is in very early stage of it’s development, it sometimes gets killed by the system and there are a few quirks like the non-adjustable transparency level and so on.

It’s a nice addition to the UIQ 3 applications catalogue and I really looking forward to it being developed further.
