Will Sony Ericsson announce new stuff this November 15th? Or will not?

, ,

According to The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog, there will be NO ANNOUNCEMENT on November 15th. Infact, he cited that, Aldo Ligouri, Head of Global Communications & PR at Sony Ericsson, replied :

"Thanks for the additional information, but I’ve done a search and can confirm that we have no plans to make any new product announcement in November. What we announced last week, on the 6th, is the last product announcement we’ll be making this year. All Sony Ericsson product announcements, regardless of their nature, are handled and co-ordinated by my group in London. I don’t know where your source has heard this information but it’s not true"

Heh... Looking at the situation right now, we have about a month and a half to end this 2007. If SE does not plan to announce new stuff this month, maybe they will do after new year... who knows...???

But frankly, I cant wait to get a glimpse of the new UIQ 3 stuff prepared for us

Support this developer - The Bergamot Project

, , ,

It's hard to find developers who are willing to loose some sleeps in order to give us UIQ 3 users something different to make our devices more useful. How many freeware UIQ 3 developers who released free software for us and keep on improving their apps? I can only recall GDesk, Free Swiss Manager, Malcolm Bryant, AnotherGuest, ... who else?

Now, this one developer you guys should keep track. His Google hosted porject page - The Bergamot Project - Open source for Symbian/UIQ currently hosts 2 applications. Swim and PodcastPlayer.

I respect this guy for developing new and interesting stuff. Please guys... Show your support. Give him feedbacks after testing his apps...

And while you are looking at his website, dont forget to check his future project, porting S60 Browser to UIQ 3! Simply, he said "......because UIQ needs a decent web browser... Bring it on!!!!

Ewan interviews UIQ Technology CEO, Johan Sandberg

, , , ...

This one is taken straight from AAS. "Johan Sandberg has been a busy man in the last few weeks, with announcements from UIQ and a number of new devices from partners for the Chistmas season making an impact. I managed to catch up with him at the recent CTIA Wireless and Entertainment Show in San Francisco to find out what's going on in the world of UIQ.

We touch on a number of issues in this interview from CTIA in San Francisco, starting with the impact of the ownership by Sony Ericsson and then Motorola coming along and taking a 50% stake. What sort of practices do UIQ have in place to treat their owners and other licencees fairly? And have they learned anything from observing Nokia’s push to make S60 a platform over a number of handset manufacturers?

And of course UIQ isn’t developed in a vacuum, there’s a huge history to the product that has influenced UIQ3, and competing devices are constantly introduced to the market, including the Apple iPhone. Can hype ever rival technology?"

I have listened to the podcast and I enjoyed it. Johan explains the decision behind what happened in UIQ in the last couple of weeks and also some insight of the UIQ future... Check this out!

Sony Ericsson's new UIQ 3 smartphones on the horizon?

, , ,

Towards the end of the year, normally, cellphone manufacturers will announce their portfolios for the coming year. This time, there's a strong wind blowing about Sony Ericsson's next generation UIQ 3 smartphones. There are still no concrete information about what will be announced but I have collected some bits and pieces about the following specifications :

- P990 successor
- Slider form factor
- Slimmer and lighter than the P990
- 2.8" VGA screen
- Built-in GPS
- Wifi 802.11b/g
- Symbian OS v9.x ***(Ares said it's Symbian OS 9.5 - hopefully with Demand Paging!)
- New UIQ (UIQ 3.2 or 4???)
- 360MHz Processor *** (Information from Ares)
- 160MB internal memory
- 128MB RAM
- WAP 2.0
- 5 megapixel camera (with AutoFocus and flash)
- HSDPA/HSUPA
- To be announced in November
- To be available in Jun 2008 (Q3 2008)

Now, whether this will be true or not, that will have to be decided on the announcement. And many people are reporting that the announcement will be made on November 15th 2008 (that's next week, yay!). And probably, more than one UIQ 3 smartphones will be anounceed...

Nothing relevant to UIQ...

, ,

Not related to UIQ whatsoever but I want to tell you guys the graphic-intense iPhone UI is something every phone manufacturer should watch out for the future.

Personally, I thought the iPhone is just a normal phone with super eye-candy on top of it. There's not much to be desired and I think I would get boring when using it after 2-3 hours. However, that's my own opinion and I welcome any comments about it

Last week I was very happy when I had the chance to play with some cool gadgets. There were more than enough stuff to make me felt ultrageek for the next 3 months! First, it was the new Nokia E51 which is still in the early protoform. It is s sleek device capable of doing the other bigger Eseries can like WiFi. However, I dont really like the small screen and the overall design, it looks and feels cheap! Yeah... I think the earlier model, E50 is better in the design department. Dont get me wrong, it has many features than E50 but the design finish left so little to be desired...

Secondly, a new gadget from mainland China. This is a unique device where it uses it's own proprietary OS, huge colour screen. Can be used as a normal phone and ... pocket tv. Yup. You read that right. A terrestrial pocket tv which can play all normal tv channels found in the neighbourhood without the need to use hi-speed data. It receives analogue tv broadcast like your home tv. It's a strange device I tell you, because it has 2 slots for SIMcard, a stylus which doubles as the antenna, a 1700mAH battery... a super-loud speaker...

There's also the P1i, E61, N95, Ericsson MC 218 and the photos were all taken using P990...

Last but not least... the Jesus-phone... Check out the photos to see what I mean.. More comments will come later...

Messaging blues...

, , ,

What happen when you beam a file to your UIQ 3 smartphone (via IR or BT) and you dont have any app associated with it? For example, a .ZIP file. The answer - Nothing... Because the phone cant bloody read it.

Ok. Here's what happen. I accept the file beamed to me, the phone tells me that I have a new item in the Inbox. I go to the Messaging Inbox, locate the new item, click on it. It says, "No viewer can be found... bla bla bla...". Then I click on "Save", fine... But it does not allow me to save to any location I want be it in the phone memory or the memory card... Aaarrrggghhhh!!!!! :ko:

Come on UIQ, this is 2007! At least, give a choice or a dialog to save the file to any place we want if there's no app to open it.

FYI, this behaviour have bugged me since UIQ 2 day 1 on P800. And is still the same on P1. And also the same on S60 ... Weird aint it!

And the only solution for UIQ 3 users at the moment is to use X-Plore's tool to check into the Messaging folder to locate the .ZIP file and move/copy to any location. I believe a zipper utility should be part of the OS and it MUST be out of the box experience. Not like this...

Please... share with me your grudge about this! :irked:

Possibly, next gen UIQ UI will look like this?

, , ,

In this year's Smartphone Show, Mats Lindoff, CVP & CTO of Sony Ericsson showed a couple of presentation slides and luckily, some people managed to snap some cool photos of what looked like the next-gen UIQ stuff. Could this be the "REAL DEAL"? Could this be the direction of UIQ in the future? Because frankly, all the eye candy reminisce a lot to Apple's solution. Look at the 2nd photo, the contact's layout reminds me of Apple's CoverFlow UI used in it's latest iPod and iTunes. UIQ has been in this business longer than Apple but why this? Wait... Am I being too emotional? Of course I am! I love UIQ since day one! And it's uniqueness is what differentiates it from others.

Tell me, do you want future UIQ to look like iPhone? All touchscreen and no hardware keys? ...

In the last few days, I got a new toy to play with. It's not that very new actually, but a loaner where I need to return it to the owner in a week's time. Want to know what the toy is? Check the gallery . By the way, the album title "Old vs New" represents not only the new stuff but also the "Dinosaur" behind it. You know what I mean?

Cheers!

Suggestions welcomed!

Yo all! I'm gonna be very tight with my schedule in the next couple of days and wont be able to post on a daily basis.

If you have suggestions to be featured in this blog, please let me know. Like app review or tips for UIQ 3 or UIQ history, stuff like that. I really appreciate that

Have a nice weekend ahead! :D

Cheers!
