DreamLife enters closed beta

, ,

You guys know how I love PIM apps especially when it's done with usability in mind. I've posted about DreamLife when it was first announced during this year's Smartphone Show and it is almost ready for primetime. For UIQ 3 users, the alternatives to the built-in Calendar are AquaCalendar and the recently announced (but utterly disappointing and poorly designed) Agendus. We dont have Handy Calendar or Papyrus or Agenda Fusion or Pocket Informant to toy around with. And to tell the truth, this is where I think some brilliant-minded Aussies in DreamSpring led by Malcolm Lithgow realised that the big hole needs to be filled in.

From what I understand, DreamLife is not only designed to enhance PIM experience but it also maked PIM more useful by integrating Contacts into it. Meaning, a calendar entry can be linked to a person in the contact database for more practical uses. This is not a new feature in PIM actually. Palm OS users have been using it for years on 3rd party PIM such as Agendus Pro. On UIQ 3 currently, the built-in Calendar doesnt have this function but if you use AquaCalendar, it's there.

For those who have registered as DreamLife betatesters, by this time, you should have received the SIS file and should active participating in the DreamLife forum in the official DreamSpring website.

Lets give them the support that they needed and together making DreamLife an application that all future UIQ 3 smartphones must be equipped with

Sony Ericsson's new UIQ 3 smartphones on the horizon?

, , ,

Towards the end of the year, normally, cellphone manufacturers will announce their portfolios for the coming year. This time, there's a strong wind blowing about Sony Ericsson's next generation UIQ 3 smartphones. There are still no concrete information about what will be announced but I have collected some bits and pieces about the following specifications :

- P990 successor
- Slider form factor
- Slimmer and lighter than the P990
- 2.8" VGA screen
- Built-in GPS
- Wifi 802.11b/g
- Symbian OS v9.x ***(Ares said it's Symbian OS 9.5 - hopefully with Demand Paging!)
- New UIQ (UIQ 3.2 or 4???)
- 360MHz Processor *** (Information from Ares)
- 160MB internal memory
- 128MB RAM
- WAP 2.0
- 5 megapixel camera (with AutoFocus and flash)
- HSDPA/HSUPA
- To be announced in November
- To be available in Jun 2008 (Q3 2008)

Now, whether this will be true or not, that will have to be decided on the announcement. And many people are reporting that the announcement will be made on November 15th 2008 (that's next week, yay!). And probably, more than one UIQ 3 smartphones will be anounceed...

Meanwhile, to get the latest discussion and happenings about this so called rumour, please visit Esato board. Here and here

Possibly, next gen UIQ UI will look like this?

, , ,

In this year's Smartphone Show, Mats Lindoff, CVP & CTO of Sony Ericsson showed a couple of presentation slides and luckily, some people managed to snap some cool photos of what looked like the next-gen UIQ stuff. Could this be the "REAL DEAL"? Could this be the direction of UIQ in the future? Because frankly, all the eye candy reminisce a lot to Apple's solution. Look at the 2nd photo, the contact's layout reminds me of Apple's CoverFlow UI used in it's latest iPod and iTunes. UIQ has been in this business longer than Apple but why this? Wait... Am I being too emotional? Of course I am! I love UIQ since day one! And it's uniqueness is what differentiates it from others.

Tell me, do you want future UIQ to look like iPhone? All touchscreen and no hardware keys? ...

Tracking your favourite stocks and weather... sounds interesting!

, , , ...

What is it actually? You need to find that out yourself. Journal Bar for Symbian UIQ 3 is now in early alpha stage and I can see it has some cool ideas behind it. However, the UI implementation is not following UIQ 3 style guideline and I found it hard to click on the tiny-weeny icons to select items. Considering that it was developed by Windows Mobile developers, I hope they will redesign the looks and feels of this app. Nevertheless, it's an interesting concept which will bring useful real-time information such as weather and stock market details directly into your UIQ 3 smartphones. Read some description about it after the screenshots... Tell me if you find this useful will ya!

Thursday Oct. 25th 2007. Mark your calendar everyone!

, , , ...

As you all probably knew by now, I'm a fan of Opera web browser. I love the current 9.24 desktop version and cant wait to see the finished future enhancement in the new alpha Kestrel 9.5. The fastest browser I've ever used. Period! On my P990, the default web is powered by Opera (although it's not as good as what I expected) and last but not least, Opera Mini which can be used in Flip Closed. I love Opera Browser!

Now here's the interesting part, if you are a user of Opera Mini 4 beta, there will be a new beta 3, scheduled to be launched this Thursday October 25th. Mark your calendar and dont miss this opportunity te experience the next step in mobile browsing.

Here's what the team have to say about the new Opera Mini 4 beta 3 :

The next step in mobile browsing

It's been a month and a half since we released the second beta of Opera Mini 4. People seem to be loving it. I wanted to give you all a quick update on what we've been working on in our labs.

Although we can't yet reveal too much, suffice it to say, we're continuing to work on ways to bring Web browsing on your mobile phone to the masses, while still having the absolute coolest technology out there. We've come up with something exciting, in which we think will take mobile browsing to a whole new level.

So what can you expect to see with the upcoming Opera Mini 4 beta? Well, I don’t want to spill the beans too early, but I will say the following: Mobile browsing is coming very close to the browsing on your computer. More to come at our Rock Opera event in San Francisco.

We're planning on releasing a new beta of Opera Mini 4 next week. The new beta is timed with the release of the Desktop 9.5 beta...

Honestly, I cant wait  ...

Palm OS app on UIQ smartphones are coming...

, , , ...

How does it feel to be able to run other OS inside your smartphone? Bet it's going to be a whole new experience aint it? Last week in the Symbian's Smartphone Show in London, there was an announcement about Styletap, which will bring more than 20,000 existing Palm OS applications into Symbian UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition unchanged. Yup, you read that right. 20,000 applications!

Wait a minute, how is that possible? A look into Styletap's website reveals it's existing solution available for Windows Mobile. Thousands of users already benefited from it. StyleTap CrossPlatform is compatible with most applications written for Palm OS® devices, and enables them to now run on Symbian smartphones. This gives consumers unprecedented freedom to choose the smartphone that meets their needs without losing their investment in mobile applications and accumulated data.

Personally, I find this exciting as well as spooky  If you know what I mean. There are a lot of great applications on Palm OS which are not ported to Symbian yet. For example, Natara Bonsai, a list manager with PC companion.

There's also some Palm OS app which have been ported excellently to Symbian like Dataviz's Documents To Go, DDH Software's HanDBase, and MobiMate's Worldmate. These are examples of applications which are carefully designed for the new platform.

And there's also some Palm apps which have been poorly ported to Symbian like Agendus for UIQ. Nowhere near the quality of the Palm version if you asked me.

I am excited to see how Symbian developer community will respond to this. Dont get me wrong, they have proven that they can produce excellent apps but in my opinion, many more work to be done in terms of providing high quality app to fill in the gap.

Styletap's solution is also interesting because it will attract Palm loyalists to choose Symbian. I know a friend who owns a couple of Palm Tungsten 3 and didn't choose Symbian because he's addictive to Palm's simple UI and powerful applications it has. In particular, applications to manage personal information like Agendus Pro.

I dont want to know the technical details behind it but I would really want to try it myself. However, it wont be available untill early next year.

For now, enjoy this video

Tell me, what Palm apps would you like to run in your UIQ 3 smartphones?

More information on Motorola Z10

, ,

I was just about to hit my sack when I receive this information. The Motorola Z10, successor to the Z8 is real and some specifications have been posted on the internet. Here are some details :

*GSM850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA, GPRS/EDGE, 3.6 Mbps HSDPA connectivity
*Symbian 9.2 OS with UIQ 3.2 UI
*3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 8x digital zoom, flash and 30 fps QVGA video recording capability
*VGA front camera
*2.2″ 320×240 QVGA 16M color display
*90 MB of built-in memory
*microSD memory card slot
*Bluetooth A2DP, miniUSB

UIQ 3.2? That is an interesting information. There have been no news about it's development and on UIQ Technology's website, the latest UIQ version is 3.1. Could this signs a new version is on the horizon and Motorola had the priveledge to develop the first device using it? The Z8 was the first UIQ 3.1 smartphone and if it's true that Z10 utilises UIQ 3.2, it's another first for Motorola. Can anyone confirm?

Designwise, it's very similar to Z8 except the colour and from these photos, the UI is somewhat different. The application icons at the bottom of the screen is something new and worth to check out!

Any opinion is very welcomed!!!
