Sony Ericsson's new UIQ 3 smartphones on the horizon?

, , ,

Towards the end of the year, normally, cellphone manufacturers will announce their portfolios for the coming year. This time, there's a strong wind blowing about Sony Ericsson's next generation UIQ 3 smartphones. There are still no concrete information about what will be announced but I have collected some bits and pieces about the following specifications :

- P990 successor
- Slider form factor
- Slimmer and lighter than the P990
- 2.8" VGA screen
- Built-in GPS
- Wifi 802.11b/g
- Symbian OS v9.x ***(Ares said it's Symbian OS 9.5 - hopefully with Demand Paging!)
- New UIQ (UIQ 3.2 or 4???)
- 360MHz Processor *** (Information from Ares)
- 160MB internal memory
- 128MB RAM
- WAP 2.0
- 5 megapixel camera (with AutoFocus and flash)
- HSDPA/HSUPA
- To be announced in November
- To be available in Jun 2008 (Q3 2008)

Now, whether this will be true or not, that will have to be decided on the announcement. And many people are reporting that the announcement will be made on November 15th 2008 (that's next week, yay!). And probably, more than one UIQ 3 smartphones will be anounceed...

Thursday Oct. 25th 2007. Mark your calendar everyone!

, , , ...

As you all probably knew by now, I'm a fan of Opera web browser. I love the current 9.24 desktop version and cant wait to see the finished future enhancement in the new alpha Kestrel 9.5. The fastest browser I've ever used. Period! On my P990, the default web is powered by Opera (although it's not as good as what I expected) and last but not least, Opera Mini which can be used in Flip Closed. I love Opera Browser!

Now here's the interesting part, if you are a user of Opera Mini 4 beta, there will be a new beta 3, scheduled to be launched this Thursday October 25th. Mark your calendar and dont miss this opportunity te experience the next step in mobile browsing.

Here's what the team have to say about the new Opera Mini 4 beta 3 :

The next step in mobile browsing

It's been a month and a half since we released the second beta of Opera Mini 4. People seem to be loving it. I wanted to give you all a quick update on what we've been working on in our labs.

Although we can't yet reveal too much, suffice it to say, we're continuing to work on ways to bring Web browsing on your mobile phone to the masses, while still having the absolute coolest technology out there. We've come up with something exciting, in which we think will take mobile browsing to a whole new level.

So what can you expect to see with the upcoming Opera Mini 4 beta? Well, I don’t want to spill the beans too early, but I will say the following: Mobile browsing is coming very close to the browsing on your computer. More to come at our Rock Opera event in San Francisco.

We're planning on releasing a new beta of Opera Mini 4 next week. The new beta is timed with the release of the Desktop 9.5 beta...

Honestly, I cant wait  ...

Where's my finance manager app?

, , , ...

One of the reasons I am still using a Psion 5 mx was because it's applications. There are so many Psion apps that have not found them ways to modern smartphones. And I mean a lot. One of them is a unified finance manager where I can track expenses, forecast my budgets, monitoring my bank accounts and cash and more. Applications like ABP5, RMR Bank, 5Accounts and Money are among examples of this excellent programming showed by Psion communities more than 5 years ago.

For my personal use, I prefer Palmtop's (now TomTom) Money which is truly excellent in assisting me managing my financial life. It's a simple and powerful app. And supports exporting to other formats like CSV which can be imported into MS Excel for analysis. I've been using Money for years and havent found it's equivalent on Symbian neither UIQ nor S60.

There are some existing app for UIQ3 like Epocware's Handy Expense and Lubisoft's Outlay but they are designed to track expenses and spending only. Nothing more, nothing less.

If there's something close to a unified personal finance manager for UIQ 3, it's Malcolm Bryant's jABPlite. However, it's written in Java, eats a lot of RAM and the UI is slow. It does offer account management and everything else you could expect from a good personal finance management app but it doesn't belong to UIQ 3 in terms of intuitive interface and takes a lot of clicks to do simple operations.

This is another area where UIQ 3 developers can take note and look into. I hope they read this...

So guys, how do you manage your finance using your UIQ 3 smartphone? A spreadsheet?

Sony Ericsson + Motorola owns UIQ. Bright (or dark) future ahead.

, , , ...

When the news was announced a day before the Smartphone Show, everybody thought that this is the big news that is being kept away for long. Since Sony Ericsson acquired UIQ early this year, I believe there were many going-ons and this is one of the results.

Who knows who or what will happen next?

I'll try to give some of my honest opinion about this announcement. First of all, Sony Ericsson has shown it's commitment towards UIQ for many years which resulted in a handful of UIQ powered Symbian smartphones (P800, P900, P910, P990, P1, M600, W950, W960). Although SE did not release many smartphones compared to the Finnish behemoth, the first generation UIQ 2 smartphones from SE are considered almost perfect for it's fanboys. Why? Many reasons, the built quality, the physical size and also SE's willingness to answer to users' grief with firmware releases. However, when P990 entered together with M600 and W950, the world turned upside down. The new generation uses Symbian's new kernel 9.1 and a totally overhauled UIQ 3. Many loved it but most hated it. The result, user frustration and migration to other platforms.

Go go UIQ Technology!!!

, , ,

This should have been done a long time ago. It is good to have strategis partners which will increase the values of your products. Names like Epocware,SysOpen Digia, Visto and the likes, are strong and could bring more confidence from customers.

I do hope, this is not only a gimmick. More and more applications are needed for UIQ 3. Looking at the current situation, comparing UIQ 3 with UIQ 2, there are less applications (not even close to S60 3rd Editions).

An open letter to Sony Ericsson

, , ,

Sally-Jane Rothemeyer aka aqualung initiated an open letter to be sent to Sony Ericsson's CEO. The letter, among others, talks about the situation faced by Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 users who felt betrayed by Sony Ericsson's lack of communication with their customers.

I fully support this initiative for a couple of reasons. Among them :
1. I bought ALL my Symbian smartphones since the P800 up till P990 using my hard-earned money.
2. Sony Ericsson in my country NEVER bothered to ask me for review unit or invite me for a dinner
3. When I went to Sony Ericsson service centres for repairs, I was always been ridiculed. The staff complaining and mumbling in front of me saying I installed too many softwares inside my SE smartphones. I should not do that next time because it would damage the device. DUH! My money pays their salary so what! :irked:

Please support this effort by signing it because we have the rights get the best of our products. After spending much money on Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 smartphones, at least we could have been told if there's going to be any firmware updates or not (as an example). We are not asking to be treated like kings but what is wrong to be attentive and courteous?

Another UIQ dedicated blog - UIQ Review by Tom Bailey

, ,

In my hunt to find some useful UIQ resources, I stumbled upon UIQ Review at http://www.uiqreview.com which is a neat and clean blog written by Thomas Bailey, a familiar name in the UIQ application development. It hosts some nice reviews of UIQ 3 applications and some useful tips on maximising the usage of UIQ 3 smartphones.

However, it has not been updated since July 2007 and I really dont know what happened behind the scene, really. But for the sake of the UIQ community and to show Tom some support, please visit UIQ Review.

Anybody knows what happened to Tom actually? And Tom, if you happen to read this blogpost, please leave some comments to show you're still kicking!
