This one is taken straight from AAS.
"Johan Sandberg has been a busy man in the last few weeks, with announcements from UIQ and a number of new devices from partners for the Chistmas season making an impact. I managed to catch up with him at the recent CTIA Wireless and Entertainment Show in San Francisco to find out what's going on in the world of UIQ.
We touch on a number of issues in this interview from CTIA in San Francisco, starting with the impact of the ownership by Sony Ericsson and then Motorola coming along and taking a 50% stake. What sort of practices do UIQ have in place to treat their owners and other licencees fairly? And have they learned anything from observing Nokia’s push to make S60 a platform over a number of handset manufacturers?
And of course UIQ isn’t developed in a vacuum, there’s a huge history to the product that has influenced UIQ3, and competing devices are constantly introduced to the market, including the Apple iPhone. Can hype ever rival technology?"
I have listened to the podcast and I enjoyed it. Johan explains the decision behind what happened in UIQ in the last couple of weeks and also some insight of the UIQ future... Check this out!

Last week I was very happy when I had the chance to
play with some cool gadgets. There were more than enough stuff to make me felt ultrageek for the next 3 months! First, it was the new Nokia E51 which is still in the early protoform. It is s sleek device capable of doing the other bigger Eseries can like WiFi. However, I dont really like the small screen and the overall design, it looks and feels cheap! Yeah... I think the earlier model, E50 is better in the design department. Dont get me wrong, it has many features than E50 but the design finish left so little to be desired...
Secondly, a new gadget from mainland China. This is a unique device where it uses it's own proprietary OS, huge colour screen. Can be used as a normal phone and ... pocket tv. Yup. You read that right. A terrestrial pocket tv which can play all normal tv channels found in the neighbourhood without the need to use hi-speed data. It receives analogue tv broadcast like your home tv. It's a strange device I tell you, because it has 2 slots for SIMcard, a stylus which doubles as the antenna, a 1700mAH battery... a super-loud speaker...
There's also the P1i, E61, N95, Ericsson MC 218 and the photos were all taken using P990...
Last but not least... the Jesus-phone... Check out the photos to see what I mean..

More comments will come later...

What happen when you beam a file to your UIQ 3 smartphone (via IR or BT) and you dont have any app associated with it? For example, a .ZIP file. The answer - Nothing... Because the phone cant bloody read it.

Ok. Here's what happen. I accept the file beamed to me, the phone tells me that I have a new item in the Inbox. I go to the Messaging Inbox, locate the new item, click on it. It says, "No viewer can be found... bla bla bla...". Then I click on "Save", fine... But it does not allow me to save to any location I want be it in the phone memory or the memory card... Aaarrrggghhhh!!!!!
Come on UIQ, this is 2007! At least, give a choice or a dialog to save the file to any place we want if there's no app to open it.
FYI, this behaviour have bugged me since UIQ 2 day 1 on P800. And is still the same on P1. And also the same on S60 ... Weird aint it!
And the only solution for UIQ 3 users at the moment is to use X-Plore's tool to check into the Messaging folder to locate the .ZIP file and move/copy to any location. I believe a zipper utility should be part of the OS and it MUST be out of the box experience. Not like this...

Please... share with me your grudge about this!

In this year's Smartphone Show, Mats Lindoff, CVP & CTO of Sony Ericsson showed a couple of presentation slides and luckily, some people managed to snap some cool photos of what looked like the next-gen UIQ stuff. Could this be the "REAL DEAL"? Could this be the direction of UIQ in the future? Because frankly, all the eye candy reminisce a lot to Apple's solution. Look at the 2nd photo, the contact's layout reminds me of Apple's CoverFlow UI used in it's latest iPod and iTunes. UIQ has been in this business longer than Apple but why this? Wait... Am I being too emotional? Of course I am! I love UIQ since day one! And it's uniqueness is what differentiates it from others.
Tell me, do you want future UIQ to look like iPhone? All touchscreen and no hardware keys? ...

In the last few days, I got a new toy to play with. It's not that very new actually, but a loaner where I need to return it to the owner in a week's time. Want to know what the toy is? Check the
gallery
. By the way, the album title "Old vs New" represents not only the new stuff but also the "Dinosaur" behind it. You know what I mean?

Cheers!

Well, these last couple of days were surely interesting and full of great news for UIQ. With announcements being made in the Smartphone Show, I'm sure a lot of UIQ users are excited to see the walks of these talks.
Not only UIQ now is owned by 2 cellphone giants, more powerful applications are also announced like DreamLife from DreamSpring which will bring another PIM alternative a lot of UIQ users are waiting for. I will follow the development of DreamLife closely and already joined the betatesters. If you have not done it yet, go to
http://www.dreamspring.com and follow the link to DreamLife.
There's also the new UIQ Open Competition 08 announced to encourage more high quality applications. There's a lot of holes to be filled in and I hope developers out there can accept the challenge and release their assault to us

However, there's no new UIQ 3 smartphone announcement yet. Probably there will and probably there wont. Time will tell...

When
the news was announced a day before the Smartphone Show, everybody thought that this is the big news that is being kept away for long. Since Sony Ericsson acquired UIQ early this year, I believe there were many going-ons and this is one of the results.
Who knows who or what will happen next?
I'll try to give some of my honest opinion about this announcement. First of all, Sony Ericsson has shown it's commitment towards UIQ for many years which resulted in a handful of UIQ powered Symbian smartphones (P800, P900, P910, P990, P1, M600, W950, W960). Although SE did not release many smartphones compared to the Finnish behemoth, the first generation UIQ 2 smartphones from SE are considered almost perfect for it's fanboys. Why? Many reasons, the built quality, the physical size and also SE's willingness to answer to users' grief with firmware releases. However, when P990 entered together with M600 and W950, the world turned upside down. The new generation uses Symbian's new kernel 9.1 and a totally overhauled UIQ 3. Many loved it but most hated it. The result, user frustration and migration to other platforms.

This should have been done a long time ago. It is good to have strategis partners which will increase the values of your products. Names like Epocware,SysOpen Digia, Visto and the likes, are strong and could bring more confidence from customers.
I do hope, this is not only a gimmick. More and more applications are needed for UIQ 3. Looking at the current situation, comparing UIQ 3 with UIQ 2, there are less applications (not even close to S60 3rd Editions).

I found this from
JUSTAMP and felt it needs a mention in this blog. If you plan to come to London next week for Symbian Smartphone Show on the 16th & 17th of October, dont forget to drop by at this event aw well. If I were to go to London this time, I would really have a hard time making decision. Why? Because there are going to be 2 events on the night prior to the Smartphone Show. This UIQ event and AAS legendary Pubmeet at Crosse Keys Pub.

Every year, AllAboutSymbian holds a meet in a pub in London and I was lucky in 2004. That was the time where I met the AAS Team in flesh and no words can explain the memories. I just published my thought about this event in
i-Symbian.Com. Actually, I was thinking to myself that it could be great if I could fly to London this year for the events (AAS Pubmeet and Symbian Smartphone Show) but I dont think I am able to do that because the cost... But if there are any party willing to sponsor yours truly... I'll accept it with open hands...
