Cheating Restaurant

, ,

I went to an Italian restaurant the other day, nothing fancy, just a plain restaurant where they serve both pizzas and pasta. I paid with my Visa-card, 251 Danish Kroner (~33 Euros). I wasn't really impressed about the waitress so I decided not to tip her. - This is common in Denmark, tip is included, but you tip if you think service is extraordinary.

I checked my account a couple of days later, and got very surprised to see that the restaurant had drawn 276 Danish kroner (~36.5 Euros) from my account. 3.5 Euros more than I should have paid.

There are two options, as I see it.

1. The waitress decided for herself that she deserved a tip, and took extra money from my account to get it

or

2. The restaurant-owner systematically cheats the costumers by taking extra money from the cards. The smart thing about doing it this way is that he only takes such a small amount that most people wouldn't want to bother to get back.

No matter what the reason is, it's fraud.

So I went to the bank and filled out some papers, that forces them to contact the restaurant and hear their version of the case. And I concider writing a letter about it in the local papers. As I have mentioned before, there is nothing shops fear more than bad press and loosing money.

I know it is only 3.5 Euros, but it's not about the money, it is the principle!

Thank you Carol, and I will follow up on this post.

The pasta wasn't even really good that day Darko. The chef had put too much salt and too much garlic on it.

Thank you Kimmie.
It will be interesting to see what happens. I have never experienced this before and I think the restaurant has some nerve to cheat like that!

You're sure it's not tax added on?

By Furie, # 8. May 2008, 07:16:44

avatar
Yes, I am sure, because that is not how we do it in Denmark. What we sign on the note is what we pay. I always leave the tip in cash if I leave any.

How rude! It looks like a 10% add-on. Are you sure there wasn't anything about adding a service fee in the menu?
Anyway, I hope you win . Keep us posted!

All I know about bills is that what they show is what you pay..
You can't add something after the the customer expects to pay that certain amount that he or she saw..

By Cois, # 8. May 2008, 08:26:00

avatar
True... It's just weird that it's almost exactly 10%.

Homer: Doh!
You have been charged for extra garlic and extra salt P:

Don't forget to sue for emotional damages as the stress of them making you think you'd gone senile early had a bad effect on you. Ten grand should do it.

3.5 euros is yours and the rest goes to Furie for lawyer fees.. :sherlock: I'm on to you Furie!

I think I'll be my own lawyer on this - I'd go for a little more than 10 grand. Remember that I had to move my butt down to the bank and stand in line for more than 20 minutes to report this!

@ Darko ~ The chef should have asked me first. :irked: I think he dropped the salt cellar into the cooking pot! :D

Believe it or not this happens A LOT. You should have canceled the entire amount filed fraud and theft charges with the bank etc... 90% of the time people do not pay attention and assume they remember the amount incorrectly because the restaurant "couldnt make a mistake" :irked:

They are thiefs pure and simple and should be prosecuted regardless of the amount.

Thank you Ripp. You know, when I wrote this I thought that at least some of the comments would be like "Come on, it's only 3.5 Euros"... But as I said, this is not about the money at all. And I am getting closer and closer to writing that letter in the local paper!

First thing you should do is call the restaurant or stop by the restaurant and ask who puts the final amounts in the receipts. It could be the waitress or it could be the owner / manager. Different restaurants do it different ways and it is hard to tell. Once you figure that out it will make it fairly clear if it was the shitty waitress or the whole restaurant.

Chances are the Local Paper wont publish the story because there is no proof that it wasnt a simple typo. Now, if 30 people have complained in the last month then obviously someone doesnt know how to fucking type....

I saw nuke em all and sort out the pieces later.
