The Happening

,

Sometimes you see a trailer that leaves so many questions that you just got to go in an watch the movie. The Happening had such a trailer.

The film sees some sort of mysterious ecological event leading to people committing mass suicide, the phenomenon spreading first from large cities then to smaller towns until it is clear a huge chunk of the East Coast is affected. At first, it is assumed to be a terrorist attack but, as more and more people are spontaneously killing themselves, it is clear the cause may be something else entirely.

The acting is unwatchable. No one in this film gives a good performance. The acting, similar to the screenplay is devoid of emotion. No one is reacting like a real person. Each character seems to be emotionally empty. They don't seem nervous that millions of people are dying, they're not hysterical or even realistic. They at no time in the film seem desperate with the desire and hope to live. At times they try to appear upset, but it is so shallow that the viewer is left flat.

The Happening asks a lot of questions. It doesn't come up with any answers. :irked:

:star::star: out of 6. It would have gotten only one if there had been aliens in it!

I have seen a trailer about a month ago and thought it is a must see movie. Now I don`t think that anymore. It seems that making a good trailer needs a lot of skill, almost like making a movie itself

Dacotah 15. June 2008, 05:59

My daughter saw this movie.

gdare 15. June 2008, 06:02

What does she think?

Dacotah 15. June 2008, 06:07

I'll have to ask her. I know she didn't like that panda movie, Kung Fu Panda.

gdare 15. June 2008, 06:10

Never heard of that one :left:

scootercats360 15. June 2008, 06:35

I will pass on the Happening after this review, but I liked Kung Fu Panda

Moesring 15. June 2008, 07:18

:makes note not to watch the movie based on this testimony:

Out of curiosity - curiosity that did NOT kill the :cat: as someone once put it  - are you planning to share any recipes, courtesy of TRS, in the near future? :chef:

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 07:21

@ Darko ~ Perhaps you will like it, I don't know. It has some good scenes in it, but I like to get some answers too. :D

@ Carol ~ It would be interesting to hear what your daughter thinks about it, to hear if she doesn't like it either.

@ Scootercat ~ The Kung Fu Panda is not up here yet, but I will see it when it comes. It looks funny.

SqueakeyCat 15. June 2008, 08:51

well, i will have to watch both and give u my opinion on them. like ur movie reviews...

btw...go look at my new blog posts, there are several...and even a couple of NEW photo albums as well.

Dacotah 15. June 2008, 09:58

I'll let you know Tilla.

theoddbod 15. June 2008, 10:42

The only positive thing I've heard mentioned about this movie so far is that one of the female characters has nice eyes. Everything else - unremittingly awful. One review's described it as the 'The most morally abhorrent film ever made'.

Furie 15. June 2008, 12:08

Nice eyes? That's a must see then.

Bearing in mind I'm a fan of bad acting (so long as it's so bad it's funny) and old horror b-movies, what do ya reckon I'd think Tils?

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 12:10

@ Kim ~ Yes, please do that. It is always interesting to know what others think of the films you've seen yourself. I'll check my watchlist during the day too.

@ Carol ~ Thank you.

@ Mart ~ I have read both good and bad reviews on this movie, it seems as it's another one of those either you love it or you hate it-films.
I didn't really like her eyes either. :D

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 12:11

@ Mik ~ Well, to be honest, I think you might like it. I think you like to figure out the ending yourself, or am I wrong? Because that was the worst for me. I hate films without endings.

rose-marie 15. June 2008, 12:12

Is it just me, or is Shyamalan getting worse and worse? I had planned on seeing this movie, but now I'm not sure anymore... I have yet to read one good review of it.

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 12:30

You may have a point Rose. I loved the 6th sense, Unbreakable was so-so, I skipped The Village and Lady in the Water, and now this, that I didn't like. :irked:

theoddbod 15. June 2008, 12:37

The first review I read said something like "Even if you like to see bad acting and terrible movies, this is 90 minutes of your life that you will never get back". Someone even called out "I can't take it anymore" in the middle of it.

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 12:38

No one left the cinema in the middle of the film when I saw it yesterday. :D

Furie 15. June 2008, 15:07

Oh that's bad. Yeah, I like an open interpretive ending but not in a bad movie. Bad movies need definite endings or cliched sequel setups. The Village wasn't that bad at all actually, as long as you had no expectations going into it.

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 16:06

I chose not to see The Village, I didn't like the trailer. Perhaps I'll rent it some day I'm bored.

SqueakeyCat 15. June 2008, 18:21

attilasoul 15. June 2008, 18:25

I commented both on your new pets post and your t-shirt post. I didn't comment on the Bush-post, since I don't know anything about American politics.

SqueakeyCat 16. June 2008, 01:58

Dacotah 17. June 2008, 05:25

Tilla, my daughter said the movie was great, she said she loved it, it was freaky, makes you think it might happen, the weather, the atmosphere.

attilasoul 17. June 2008, 05:37

Oh, then it is true that it is either a love it or hate it movie.
Thanks Carol.

Dacotah 17. June 2008, 06:44

You are welcome Tilla.

yomeriux 19. June 2008, 15:01

arff, it sucks cause I really wanted to watch it!:ko:

yomeriux 19. June 2008, 15:05

Rose, its true, Shyamalan is getting worse...I loved the sixth sense, signs...everything except the part where they actually see the green guys..ridiculous. And so on...:ko:

SqueakeyCat 19. June 2008, 15:52

i have yet to c the 6th sense and sign

decaspecht 20. June 2008, 15:04

I'm curious about this movie. I have to watch it.

attilasoul 20. June 2008, 15:05

Please let us know what you think of it, Andre.

decaspecht 20. June 2008, 15:28

Ok, I will let you know. I don't know when it will be coming to my town. People from here say the films always delay to arrive here because it's the end of the world. P:

SqueakeyCat 20. June 2008, 20:53
