Toonophobia

, , ,

I heard on the news that some fundamentalists are discussing on an internet forum how they can kill as many Danes as possible by poisoning our water supplies. All because of the infamous drawings of their prophet Mohammad.

I respect that other people believe in other things than I do. I don't have to understand what others believe in, and I don't have to have an opinion about either religion. I see myself as open minded, not judging others by their religion, but willing to listen and discuss things if requested.

I am raised to believe in the freedom of speech. It is very important to me that we are allowed to speak freely in Denmark. It is not ok to threaten other people because you think they said or did something wrong.

So please - it's not that our cartoonists actually killed Mohammad himself. All they did was drawing him. It's not such a big deal, is it!?

Ps. Don't bother. I stopped drinking water from today.

Apparently it is a big deal. After all, if no one thought it was a big deal, there would not be news like this and so I wouldn't be commenting in a post like this to begin with.

Being a neutral party that tries to promote tolerance and understanding, all I will say is that these repeated plans to harm Danes are not good for the general perception of Islam.

:sst: More profound thoughts to come... perhaps. Right now Moesring really needs to go to sleep.

attilasoul 15. September 2008, 04:26

Sleep tight Moe. And thanks for commenting anyway.

Moesring 15. September 2008, 04:27

The irony is, I can't sleep now no matter how much I may want to. If I sleep, I won't wake until evening and thus I won't be able to buy much-needed food.

Dacotah 15. September 2008, 04:35

OMG, I'm sorry to hear this Tilla.
:frown:

gdare 15. September 2008, 04:44

The whole problem is because of the wrong interpreting of a faith. Threatening innocent people with murdering, poisoning, making damage and fear has nothing to do with faith. It has something with a sick and twisted mind and faith is just an excuse.
What Moe said, this is "not good for the general perception of Islam." Or any other religion if their members use such an excuse to kill other people.

attilasoul 15. September 2008, 04:56

@ Moe ~ Aww, poor you. Not being able to sleep is so annoying! But you could buy an alarm clock to wake you up before shops close!

@ Carol ~ Thank you. *hugs*

@ Darko ~ Killing in the name of god does not make any sense to me. And you know, it bothers me that things get blown out of proportions.
Just because someone annoys you doesn't give you the right to neither threaten nor kill them.
Thanks for the comment - I think you hit the spot right on.

Dacotah 15. September 2008, 05:01

You are welcome Tilla.

theoddbod 15. September 2008, 06:41

Evil fuckers

Anyway, these people don't care about the perception of their faith by non-believers.

rose-marie 15. September 2008, 07:00

They are getting sooooo tiresome . How long ago since the caricatures anyway? Talk about holding a grudge forever...

Do your sources know which forum they have been using?

theoddbod 15. September 2008, 07:03

rose-marie 15. September 2008, 07:25

chthoniid 15. September 2008, 08:31

Then there's also forest jihads...

The AGE reported this week that Australia has been singled out as a target for "forest jihad". A group of Islamic extremists is urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfires as a weapon of terror. US intelligence channels earlier this year had identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to "start forest fires". The website, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the "eye for an eye" doctrine. With the nation heading into another hot, dry summer, Australian intelligence agencies are treating the possibility that bushfires could be used as a weapon of terrorism as a serious concern.

Spaggyj 15. September 2008, 08:46

This is fucking disgusting. And you know, it's giving a bad name to Islam, just because a few evil people twist the ethics of the religion. There has always been bloodshed in the name of god - this will not cease, ever. I think that the way people of Islamic faith are now treated by the masses is awful - and it's all down to these who stray from the true path of the faith they're supposed to follow.
*shakes head*

Furie 15. September 2008, 08:52

If they follow the faith they wouldn't even consider mass murder. If they don't they shouldn't have a problem with the cartoons. End of. Anything else is just bull.

Cois 15. September 2008, 09:12

:ko: don't they ever let up?
What happened to peacefull nations and gods?
I say if any god finds offence then they should handle it and strike the ones dead that go against them.. But of course the followers got the go-ahead and will act in their place..

b_laudanum 15. September 2008, 13:24

Tilla, I understand your point and I DO agree with you, but is kinda hard to accept that in these days we're living, afraid and not completely free that some people (in this case cartunists) can cause such a problem to a whole people.
My point is, ok... is just a cartoon, but because of this all your people can suffer with the Mohaameds... this is so worrying!
I always like to see both angles and I love cartoons, even those who joke with Jesus (like my husband loves to put in his blog) but sometimes we need to be careful...
I guess the cartoonists just take the wrong time to do it.

qlue 15. September 2008, 14:46

awww

attilasoul 15. September 2008, 15:33

Ooh, so many comments while I was away... :eyes:

The cartoons of Mohammad was publiced in 2005 in the Danish Paper Jyllandsposten. They were re-printed in 17 Danish newspapers in February 2008, after the Danish police arrested several persons for planning the murder on one of the cartoonists.

The internet forum, in which the talk about poisoning Danish water supplies is called "al-ekhlaas", not that it makes me any wiser.

Wasn't there some kind of attempt on "revenge" shortly after the cartoons. I think I remember something about angry fundamentalists and a drawing of a famous Dane?! Maybe our prime minister or the Queen? That incident kinda died shortly after, since it didn't really offend anybody.

Furie 15. September 2008, 17:06

The best thing to remember is that those that talk about these things publically are usually nothing to do with those who have the ability to perform such an attack. If they were, they wouldn't talk about it so openly, they'd just get on and do it, ya know?

attilasoul 15. September 2008, 17:08

Yes, I know. I think it's the outrageousness that annoys me. That some people can even think that it counts like an eye for an eye.

b_laudanum 15. September 2008, 17:21

I agree with Furie... that's why it's worrying.

chthoniid 15. September 2008, 21:50

I've got a colleague- who as he worked in counter-terrorism (so no names mentioned) before crossing to conservation- moved his family from the UK to Australia. The reason was he's expecting an attack like the one attilasoul mentioned. In fact he's surprised it hasn't happened already.

OTOH, it doesn't take much to start a forest fire in Australia- drunk teenage males manage it with depressing frequency.

Still, we do have a theological insight- God wants koalas to be roasted alive. :yuck:

theoddbod 15. September 2008, 22:24

The problem with describing them as going against their religion by practising violence is that it's all interpretation, like any religious text. You've got ones who are peaceful, friendly and a pleasure to know. Then there are the ones who focus on the parts about the non-believers being unworthy, and the ones who discount the non-violent bits by saying non-believers don't count. The fact that a lot of the muslim rulers encourage it to distract from their own shortcomings doesn't help. Although most rulers do that to some degree - a bogeyman is a powerful ally.

chthoniid 15. September 2008, 22:45

Sure, there's a world of difference between an Hanafi (11th C hip and funky sect) and a Wahibist (19th C Saudi Arabian reactionary sect).

The sad thing however, was that the Muslim world in medieval times was brilliant. This was period of scientific advancement in mathematics (algebra afterall, has an Arabic root), astronomy and medicine.
Women's rights were generally pretty advanced (Muhammad ended female infanticide) and the economy was sophisticated (cheque or check is another Islamic invention).

My ancestors were still using stone tools and eating each other.

theoddbod 15. September 2008, 22:58

I have a vision of all the religions' founders returning one day and saying to everyone "NO! That's not what we meant at all, morons! That's it - no heaven for anyone!"

Furie 16. September 2008, 00:38

I already have returned Mart. I've said this to people and they've branded me a heretic so they can continue their sins.

Furie 16. September 2008, 00:43

Ever notice how it's the devout followers of peaceful religions causing all this death and misery, probably because they've wiped out the warrior ones? You don't hear of many Norse extremist cells out to kill people because they wont get to Valhalla otherwise. It's always the ones that believe such actions would deny them a shot at paradise.

so what's the official theological position on burning koalas?

Furie 16. September 2008, 00:56

Only burn as much as you can eat. Skin it first and use the skin for something rather than just wasting it. Take as much as you can with you for later meals and bury the remains somewhere so they can give back to the earth.

chthoniid 16. September 2008, 01:01

You can't eat koalas, they taste like cough medicine and it's like chewing a cough-lolly  It's all the Eucalypt leaves they eat.

qlue 17. September 2008, 01:50

But nothing soothes a sore throat quite like a koala steak seasoned with chilli powder.

attilasoul 17. September 2008, 05:47

I don't think I would like to eat a koala steak. They are just too cute.

Furie 17. September 2008, 12:01

How about a kitten?

attilasoul 17. September 2008, 12:08

I'd rather fry a troll! :ninja:

Amazing what you find on the photos page here, isn't it.

chthoniid 17. September 2008, 21:39

How about a kitten?

On the other hand, I hear that cats are quite palatable

Are koalas really cute? I mean they're pretty much a brain-atrophied, sex-crazed, smelly, eucalypt eating device.

attilasoul 17. September 2008, 22:58

@ Mik ~ Indeed! What searchwords did you use to come up with a photo like that?

@ Chthoniid ~ They are? :eyes:

I have only seen them on television and in books, but they look cute. awww

chthoniid 17. September 2008, 23:08

I'm afraid so. Koalas have mastered one neat trick. They can survive on gum-leaves. No other mammal can do that because the leaves have almost no nutritional value.

A diet of gum leaves, leaves you a bit 'pongy' (imagine if your diet was nothing but cough-lozenges). To survive on gum leaves you need to reduce your energy budget. Because the brain uses a lot of energy, you can survive on a lot less energy with a small brain.

The koala brain is so small, the two hemispheres have a gap running between them.

That leaves koalas with 3 basic drives- eat, have sex, and fight. On the plus side, there's no competition for your food source. On the negative, they're not very smart. In many ways, the perfect symbol of Australians...

Yeah, they look cute in pictures

qlue 18. September 2008, 01:41

There's nothing negative about not being smart. It takes some degree of intelligence to be aware of the short comings of not having much of a brain. Besides, what you've just described is valid for at least half the world's human population. (eat, sleep and sex)
A panda walks into a restaurant and orders a sandwich. After eating the sandwich, it shootsthe waiter and proceeds to exit the establishment.
"WTF?" exclaims the maitre'd "why did you shoot the waiter, and how can you leave without paying?"
"I'm a panda," it replies, "google it!"
So the maitre'd googles 'panda' and reads, "Panda, eats shoots and leaves."

attilasoul 18. September 2008, 04:38

@ Chthoniid ~ Interesting, really. I didn't know that there isn't much nutrition value in what koala bears eat - that sounds really ill-considered... But nature is damn smart that it compensates in other ways.
Have you ever touched one?

@ Aadil ~ I know some people that's excactly like that also.
 @ the joke.

theoddbod 18. September 2008, 07:10

Ironically, he misquoted the joke - it's "eats, shoots and leaves". It's one of those sentences used to illustrate the importance of punctuation and grammar.

Furie 18. September 2008, 10:24

I didn't. It was on the new photos page here a while back. Been waiting to use it.

attilasoul 18. September 2008, 10:26
