Moving the Little Mermaid?!

,

She's been blown up, decapitated and doused in paint and now the Little Mermaid statue needs a holiday, albeit a working one. At least that is what some people think.

The organisers of the Danish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010 see the Little Mermaid playing a key role in promoting Denmark. With the support of the City Council, they plan to remove the statue from her perch at Langelinie and send her to China for six months.

The proposal has received support from the Economy and Trade Ministry, the mayor and a number of political parties in the city council. The council owns the statue and a vote in November will decide the fate of the statue in the project.

The family members of the statue's late designer own the copyright to the little lady and are upset by the plan. They were told about the plan, and they said no and that it was better to make a copy and send that to China instead.

One of the members of the pavilion consortium, has said that should the Little Mermaid be moved, they would put a stand-in in her place. They are currently working with three Chinese sculptors to get their interpretation of the Little Mermaid. Their work is supposed to be displayed at Langelinie during the six months the statue is away.

WTF???

Don't take the little mermaid and give us chinese mermaids instead. The Little Mermaid belongs here goddamnit!

Homophobia

, , ,

Ørstedsparken in the centre of Copenhagen is a cosy little park people can visit in the daytime;
There are playgrounds and a lake where you can feed the ducks and swans. There are benches where you can relax, and large lawns. It's a great green area in the center of a big city. But when the sun goes down, the crowd changes. Ørstedsparken has always been a well-known meeting spot for gay men in the city. However, there are warnings of an increase in hate crimes against gay people in the area.

The National Association for Gays and Lesbians (LBL) says that they have seen a rise in the number of attacks against gay people in the last few years.

The Copenhagen municipality only recently began registering cases of hate crimes and discrimination against homosexuals. In the last month, 62 hate crimes against gay people have been reported. They believe the actual figure is much higher, and that many don't report if they get attacked.

As a result of the violence, the Copenhagen police have increased the number of patrols in the Ørestedsparken area.

The LBL would like to see a course against homophobia introduced as part of sex education in Danish schools, saying that the current teaching aids are out of date.

What is going on? Where did tolerance go? Not liking what other people do, doesn't give anybody rights to attack the people they dislike. To be honest, I never really understood homophobia. I've heard a lot of guys explaining it with: "I don't want him to make a pass at me!" That's probably the lamest I have ever heard. Don't flatter yourself, guys!

Talking bins

,

Copenhagen residents will maybe soon be rewarded with fine words of praise when they put rubbish in the new garbage bins in parts of the city.

In the wake of recent polls showing that the city is among Europe's dirtiest, local councillors are making concerted efforts to turn the tide and aim to be the cleanest capital of the continent by 2015.

In Nyhavn, one of the trial areas, the bins will thank passers-by for remembering to put rubbish in them. And in Gothersgade street, leading off the King's Square, the containers will dazzle pedestrians with their eloquence: 'Together we can keep the city clean.'

Personally I don't think it makes a difference for the amount of garbage in Copenhagen whether the bins talk or not. I haven't seen the bins myself yet, but I will definitely look out for them.

"Cum for a good cause!"
Masturbators with exhibitionistic tendencies can now participate in Denmark's first masturbation marathon. The event takes place in Copenhagen on May 31st, and have the sex-environmental fighters "Fuck For Forest" as guests of honour.

Masturbate-a-thon is an event where people get sponsored in order to participate and masturbate. The idea is from the USA and goes back to 1999; where a group of people named Good Vibrations arranged the first masturbate-a-thon in San Francisco. The first European masturbate-a-thon meeting was set in London in 2006, and now the time has come to put up a race in Copenhagen.

As a participant in the event you are given the choice to jerk off for as long as you want to - or you can compete in one out of three disciplines:

1) Long term masturbation
2) Number of orgasms
3) Length of spurts

The organizers report that there are 50-60 entries for the time being...

Countess Danner

, , ,

Today I am going to tell you a story about a young girl, Louise Rasmussen, who was born in 1815. When she was 11 years old she was admitted to the Royal Theaters School of Ballet, and in 1842 she had a son. Louise was not married to the child's father, so the little boy was placed with fosterparents, and Louise went to Copenhagen to establish a fashion shop.

The child's father introduced Louise to crown prince Frederik. Frederik became King Frederik the 7th in 1848, and in 1850 he married Louise "to his right hand". That means that if they had children, they wouldn't have right of inheritance to the Danish crown. He had to do it this way, since he had already been married twice. When the two were married, Louise got the title Countess Danner.

The Danes, especially the aristocracy and the upper class, were very shocked over this marriage between the king and the daughter of an unmarried maid, so she was harassed in different ways. After the kings death in 1863 she lead a retired life.

In 1873, shortly before her death, she established the "King Frederik the Seventh's establishment for poor women of the working classes". The House was finished in 1875, and is now known as the Danner House (Dannerhuset).

Here is the Danner House anno 2008:

The Danner House contains a private, humanitarian organisation, which works for womens rights. The house is preserved, and does also contain a refuge for battered wives and their children.

More than 1,000 women enquire at the Danner House every year. The House is run by 23 employes and almost 200 volunteers.

Men are not allowed in the house due to security issues.
