I'd made the same choice!

Toonophobia

, , ,

I heard on the news that some fundamentalists are discussing on an internet forum how they can kill as many Danes as possible by poisoning our water supplies. All because of the infamous drawings of their prophet Mohammad.

I respect that other people believe in other things than I do. I don't have to understand what others believe in, and I don't have to have an opinion about either religion. I see myself as open minded, not judging others by their religion, but willing to listen and discuss things if requested.

I am raised to believe in the freedom of speech. It is very important to me that we are allowed to speak freely in Denmark. It is not ok to threaten other people because you think they said or did something wrong.

So please - it's not that our cartoonists actually killed Mohammad himself. All they did was drawing him. It's not such a big deal, is it!?

Ps. Don't bother. I stopped drinking water from today.

I'm not responsible!

2007 set a new interesting record. Denmark had five brand new rules every day – or one every five hours.

After having been stable at around 1,000 rules per year throughout the 1990s, the law factory has begun to work at top speed.

The Danish government scored a record of 1,854 new laws and executive orders in 2007, compared with 1,475 new laws in Sweden in the same period. And we still call Sweden "Prohibition Sweden"!

I guess that means that that soon it will be official that Danes do not have to think for themselves. When everything is regulated by law, you remove the responsibility that people would otherwise have shouldered.

Homophobia

, , ,

Ørstedsparken in the centre of Copenhagen is a cosy little park people can visit in the daytime;
There are playgrounds and a lake where you can feed the ducks and swans. There are benches where you can relax, and large lawns. It's a great green area in the center of a big city. But when the sun goes down, the crowd changes. Ørstedsparken has always been a well-known meeting spot for gay men in the city. However, there are warnings of an increase in hate crimes against gay people in the area.

The National Association for Gays and Lesbians (LBL) says that they have seen a rise in the number of attacks against gay people in the last few years.

The Copenhagen municipality only recently began registering cases of hate crimes and discrimination against homosexuals. In the last month, 62 hate crimes against gay people have been reported. They believe the actual figure is much higher, and that many don't report if they get attacked.

As a result of the violence, the Copenhagen police have increased the number of patrols in the Ørestedsparken area.

The LBL would like to see a course against homophobia introduced as part of sex education in Danish schools, saying that the current teaching aids are out of date.

What is going on? Where did tolerance go? Not liking what other people do, doesn't give anybody rights to attack the people they dislike. To be honest, I never really understood homophobia. I've heard a lot of guys explaining it with: "I don't want him to make a pass at me!" That's probably the lamest I have ever heard. Don't flatter yourself, guys!

Hans Christian Andersen in China

, ,

A Chinese clothing company specialising in H.C. Andersen merchandise has become a commercial success since it began three years ago.

The merchandise featuring logos and images of the famous Danish writer brings in a turnover of 60 million Chinese yuan, or 5.438 million Euros a year.

120 specialist shops sell H.C. Andersen clothing today, and they hope to increase it to 300 in China and open their first stores in Europe by next year.

Company director Chen Song Ru explains that the company is not just driven by its commercial success but also by an ethical policy: Parents who buy the clothes can get 10 percent of the purchase price refunded if they deliver the clothes back to the shop when they become too small for their children. The firm then donates the clothes to poor children and orphans, with a greeting from their former owner.

I tried to find some images of the H. C. Andersen clothes, but I haven't been able to. It makes me wonder, if this is the story of the Emperor's new clothes once again. :D

I also read that H. C. Andersen has been given a Chinese name – An Tu Sheng – and his famed story of the little matchstick girl has been edited to avoid mention of the little girl freezing to death on a New Year's morning.
Come on! Don't change the fairy tales. That's not right!

Coca-Cola and Kellogg's

, ,

Coca-Cola and Kellogg's have been reported to the Danish authorities for misrepresenting their products' contents on their labels. The Danish Consumer Council has informed the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration of food label violations committed by the two international companies.

Kellogg's cereals and Coca-Cola soft drinks list the fat and sugar content of their products as being by 'portion'. However, the consumer council says that measurement varies from product to product and is often too small to be a realistic indicator of what a person's intake would be. For example, Coco Pops cereal lists its portion measurement as 30 grams - far less than a bowl of cereal would typically be.

In addition, the products contents are calculated as being for 'an adult woman of normal weight'. But how tall, fat or thin is a "standard" woman?

The labels reflect changes in the declaration rules initiated by the new 'Guidelines Daily Amounts' (GDA) regulations, instituted by the European food industry. Those guidelines are not as strict as Danish labelling laws.

I hope they get a heavy fine for making things opaque. The strict rules Denmark have are to help the costumers.

MasterMinds?!

Masterminds is another word that comes up all the time.
You keep hearing about these terrorist Masterminds that get killed in the Middle East.
Terrorist Masterminds.
Mastermind is sort of a lofty way to describe what these guys do, don't you think?
They're not Masterminds.
"OK, you take bomb, right? And you put in your backpack. And you get on bus and you blow yourself up. Alright?"
"Why do I have to blow myself up? Why can't I just...?"
"Who's the fucking Mastermind here? Me or you?"

The text comes from a Danish song, called "Underwear goes inside the pants". I think it hits the nail on the head pretty good!

MasterMinds.... Yeah right!

Did you ever wonder...?

, ,

Did you ever wonder...:

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
