Corruption

,

I have just heard on the the news that Denmark has come out on top of the list of the least corrupt countries for the second year in a row.

According to Transparency International, Denmark and New Zealand share the top spot with Sweden. The index looks at the level of corruption in public institutions and builds upon evaluations from experts and opinion polls. Denmark scores 9.3 out of 10. Norway drops from 8.7 last year to 7.9 this year. UK drops from 8.4 to 7.7.

At the other end of the scale is Somalia with a score of 1, closely followed by Iraq and Myanmar with 1.3.

I see that Denmark, whilst still at the top, has actually become more corrupt - it was 9.4 last year. :insane:

theoddbod 25. September 2008, 07:24

It's Tilla, bribing everyone with cookies p:

Moesring 25. September 2008, 07:35

I was thinking extortion rather than bribes. P:

gdare 25. September 2008, 08:06

Serbia is 85th with rate 3.4 :left: But I supposed it is like this... maybe worse...

rose-marie 25. September 2008, 09:04

That's quite a big drop for Norway too... :sherlock:

Furie 25. September 2008, 10:01

See what happens when I take over?

Moesring 25. September 2008, 10:08

You're happy that your acquisitions have become more corrupt?

I would have thought you'd prefer your underlings to not be taking bribes to disregard slurs against your Furious name. Homer: Doh!

attilasoul 25. September 2008, 12:21

It's not me bribing with cookies, it's me being bribed with cookies!

Furie 25. September 2008, 12:29

You forget, since I came up with the idea of set bribe prices and taxing bribes I'm profiting from everything.

attilasoul 25. September 2008, 12:31

Not in my country. That's just wishful thinking!

Furie 25. September 2008, 13:12

Yes, Prime Minister Tilla. We you don't take kindly to corruption in our your country, do you?:wink::wink:

b_laudanum 25. September 2008, 13:54

Spain - 28th and Brazil 80th... :frown:

attilasoul 25. September 2008, 14:03

No Mik, I don't. I only get the cookies to make things work and to keep trolls out of the country.

That's not good, Bea. :frown:

wickedlizard 25. September 2008, 17:39

I'm glad to see that Portugal is not a corrupt as I thought... although it still needs a lot more transparency...

Furie 25. September 2008, 18:09

:sst: Keep it up. The more people fall for it, the more we can lure into our country and make profits from.

wickedlizard 25. September 2008, 18:49

qlue 25. September 2008, 20:43

I don't even wan't to know where South Africa ranks on that list. :insane:

gdare 25. September 2008, 21:35

Solid 54th place :D

qlue 25. September 2008, 21:57

I just said I didn't want to know! :irked: .
If I wanted to know, I could have looked it up myself.

theoddbod 25. September 2008, 22:56

I'm a little surprised to see Canada ranked so high, but maybe it's just their politicians that are corrupt.

chthoniid 26. September 2008, 02:00

Small liberal democracies tend to do well in such surveys.

Fwiw, corruption rankings take into account a range of institutions, not just parliamentarians

I would be surprised if Canada's politicians were conspicuously worse than a lot of other countries.

:::Sigh::: Stupid Adobe Reader is taking forever. It's a LIST for Pete's Sake! I think it's downloading the list from Jupiter.

Can someone tell me ... is the USA corrupt? :D

WHAT, Tilla? Denmark is the least corrupt? What explains the 16USD movie theater ticket prices? Heh Heh Heh! There's some dirty bit of corruption going on there. Homer: Doh! On second thought. Sorry about that. My mistake. That is Greed ... NOT corruption.

chthoniid 27. September 2008, 23:04

US is not especially corrupt. But it is worse than most smaller, liberal democracies.

NZ movie-theatre ticket prices are not nearly as bad as Denmark (16USD!!) so, no link between corruption and theatres I'm afraid.

attilasoul 28. September 2008, 04:07

@ Suntana ~ USA is sharing 18th place on the list with Belgium and Japan, having 7.3 points.
And you're right. It's greed to charge 16USD for a movie-ticket. But our prices have gone ridiculously high up during the last year, and movie prices follow. :frown:

@ Chthoniid ~ How much is a ticket for a movie in NZ?

Furie 28. September 2008, 10:47

Someone asked "Is USA corrupt?" on Ask A Stupid Question Day.:hat:

attilasoul 28. September 2008, 11:36

Very nice timing indeed!

Suntana 28. September 2008, 14:01

Nah! The USA isn't corrupt. The USA is ... Misunderstood. The USA is complex and has many layers like an onion. You have to peel layers off to get to the essence of the real core of ... of ... of, Okay. So, there is corruptionesque activity going on. Woooooo! How 'bout them Oil Companies? :yikes: :bomb:

Furie 28. September 2008, 15:03

You walked right into that. p:

Suntana 28. September 2008, 15:40

I was curious where the USA stood. I knew it wasn't as bad as Mexico.

chthoniid 28. September 2008, 20:04

Adult ticket prices in Auckland (most expensive) range from $NZ15 at peak times to $10 at offpeak. That makes it (roughly) between $US6.60 and $US10.00 per ticket.

Provincial cities tend to be cheaper.
