Stop Smoking Day

, ,

No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day that began in the United Kingdom in 1984. The day is intented to help smokers that want to quit smoking.

We have adopted the tradition in Denmark, so March 7th is out National Stop Smoking Day. 25% of the adult Danish population smoke, and statistics say that half of them would like to quit.

I have never smoked. Everybody in my family smoked but my grandmother and me. I remember I hated the smell of it, and that was enough reason for me not to start. Now I am allergic and get breathing problems when I am around people who smoke, so I was glad when the law against smoking in public building was introduced in August last year. That means I can go out and still be able to sleep at night without waking up gasping for air.

 No way, maybe next year P:

I only smoke outdoors and I don't smoke near non-smokers

attilasoul 7. March 2008, 05:26

That's great with smokers that are considerate!

*Hugs*

dannii 7. March 2008, 05:29

*hugz back*

Although I feel so bad because I was over 3 months without it, but well, my depression and all that, I needed at least a bit of pleasure from life. When I'm ok again I will quit it for sure, now that I know that I can quit it.

I was smoking when I was in high school, nothing serious though. I stopped when started to practice kendo, some 21 years ago and never wanted to start again.
Nice post

attilasoul 7. March 2008, 05:54

@ Dannii ~ Well, that happens all the time, and you should be glad for that time it went well instead of feeling bad about starting again. When you are ready for it, you will do it again, and I am sure you will succeed with it!

@ Darko ~ Wise decision to stop smoking when you wanted to be serious about your sport. Practicing kendo you'll need your lung capacity for that!
Thanks for the kind words.

Cois 7. March 2008, 07:32

Today I shall smoke for those who can't..:knight: I am kidding..:left:

attilasoul 7. March 2008, 07:51

 Well, don't smoke for me, please! :D

Cois 7. March 2008, 07:59

Puff puff puff.. p:

In this country, smoking in any public building is banned. Pubs, cafe's, workplaces, it's all illegal now.. And I agree with it. Just because there was a smoking section and non-smoking section, it doesn't mean that the smoke will just stay in the smoking section! It's stupid, and I'm glad of it being abolished. I am like Dan - I don't like to smoke around non-smokers.
When I'm with Gran, I always tell her to go away while I'm on the balcony having a smoke. She doesn't seem to mind, but I'll get as far away from her and others as possible.

attilasoul 7. March 2008, 08:48

We have almost the same law here, with some stupid exceptions. For instance, the pub owner can decide whether smoking is allowed or not if his pub is less than 40 squaremetres. And that have meant that some creative pub owners has made a giant "wardrobe", so his area gets just below 40 squaremetres, and then people can smoke in the wardrobe. Ridiculous. It seems the tide is turning though, and I think it might be changed in a few years when the law is being revidated (?).

I don't care if people smoke or not, as long as they are considerate about it.

P*Nut 7. March 2008, 08:58

The new no-smoking laws in the UK have caused new problems though for non-smokers like me. Like when you leave any busy train or tube station and are then hit by seemingly everyone lighting up at once and a huge smoke fug fills your lungs!!!

Spaggyj 7. March 2008, 09:13

Hmmm, people are stupid for lighting up right outside the doors. It doesn't take much to move a few feet away :irked:

Spaggyj 7. March 2008, 09:14

Tilla, that is stupid. I'm sure before long there'll change the law to no exceptions, like ours.

Furie 7. March 2008, 09:22

I want a smoke. This post is stressing me out. Back in a sec.
...
I'm back. *blows dog shaped smoke rings at kitten*
I still think buildings should be able to designate whether they're smoking or non-smoking buildings. I agree that non-smoking areas inside buildings don't work, but smoking versions at least add the choice.

I'm still pissed that there's no help for people who want to give up, yet the government taxes cigarettes so highly.

rose-marie 7. March 2008, 10:03

There is something very bad with that no-smoking law... Suddenly you smell all different kinds of funky odours when you're at a bar, club or whatever. I never thought so many people farted on the dancefloor!

Spaggyj 7. March 2008, 10:17

Furie 7. March 2008, 10:19

Why else do ya think the music's so loud Rose?

rose-marie 7. March 2008, 10:52

I thought the music was so loud so you wouldn't have to listen to people's drivel after a few drinks p:.

Cois 7. March 2008, 11:10

We have the same laws.. Doesn't stop people mind you.. On many occasions I asked a smoker on a train that they're not abiding by the law.. Maybe it was just me craving a smoke and I hate to crave and not be able to light up so spoiling the pleasure for someone else seems like a good idea.. That or I'm very law abiding..

gdare 7. March 2008, 13:52

In pubs in Serbia, pub owner must have 10% of tables (not less than 1) as a non-smoking area. One of my friends comapred this as if somebody will mark 10 square meters of a swimming pool as an area where you are not alowed to piss  It is not that we are alowed to piss in our swimming pools, but I hope you got the point.
 @ Rose
There is a story about pub owners in England (Kimmie and Mik correct me if I am wrong), they have discovered some strange smell after the smoking was forbidden in public places - it was so awfull that visitors started to complain; they discovered that all those smells existed before, but were covered by smoke of a cigarettes. Now they started to put some artificial smell (as cigarette smoke ) to cover it again
Maybe it was in Ireland..... :left:

attilasoul 7. March 2008, 17:33

@ Nutty ~ We have always had that problem outside the cinemas.

@ Kimmie ~ I sure hope they do because this is freaking ridiculous!

Mik wrote:

Depending on where you live, there is help to get here. And most places it's free too.

@ Rose ~ At least they don't turn down the music too!

@ Cois ~ Having a law that is not enforced, doesn't make any sense. *Shakes head*

@ Darko ~ We had that rule in planes a long while ago. You were only allowed to smoke in the back section of the plane. As if the smoke knew it should stay back there

What happens here is that all the smokers get told by their employers "Don't smoke outside the front door - it creates a bad impression". So they go and smoke outside other people's offices, and they sometimes smoke outside ours. This leads to more emails saying "We have had complaints about our staff smoking outside so-and-so's office", they move, and the jig continues.
Either that, or they wander around. I see much more smoking outside these days as I walk into the city centre. I'm glad it's banned from places like pubs and the like, but I don't see why designated smoking rooms in offices are now verboten.

attilasoul 8. March 2008, 05:07

I don't understand the argument that it creates a bad impression. To me it creates the impression that this company has a non smoking policy, and it is followed. But perhaps that's just me. I think there is supposed to be room for everyone, smokers or non-smokers. Good companies creates good conditions for both parts, so it won't be a fight between the two.

theoddbod 8. March 2008, 10:12

Here it's "No smoking in a place of work". Full stop. No designated areas inside. We've also had some debate about what happens when, say, a plumber visits the house of a smoker.

attilasoul 8. March 2008, 14:08

The biggest debate here is about old people and their home help, and about children and their minders. It's an interesting discussion, since it's about whether people are allowed to smoke in their own homes or not.
