I'm Ba-ack... Opera Users Have Higher IQ and Firefox Becomes a Nazi Prison Camp!

, , ,

Sorry about my extended absence from posting to this blog. Life is funny like that sometimes.

I'd like to share the reason behind my return and why I think I'll probably be around a little more often now.

There are actually a couple of reasons for my absence and also for my return. I've been working on several of my machines, besides trying to keep up with my work and play websites. And unfortunately My Opera was pretty low on my list of priorities. And I have used Firefox for years as my default browser primarily because of all the extended functionality that comes with it via the 3rd party addons.

Mozilla has recently decided that they intend to phase out version numbers completely and disabling the "turn off automatic updates" feature. So, their idea is that they should have control over my machine if I want to use their browser, at least control over my browser. And in so doing they are rendering 3rd party addon developers helpless in keeping up with their changes. Hell, to my understanding there won't even be any notification of changes made to the browser used on current user machines unless you follow moz.dev.list (you can view some of the discussion here) or some such nonsense.

So, they want to control some aspect of my machine without my consent and are rendering useless the bulk of what made Firefox my "go to" browser.

I've always tried to keep Opera around and to use it but its addon widgets just didn't hold a candle to those of Firefox. Still, I installed and used Opera. Now with this new announcement, I've decided to leave Firefox entirely until some enterprising genius's come together to fork and liberate Firefox from the evil clutches of Mozilla.org with a "Libre" rodent (or other such small creature) that is truly open source for the masses as happened notably with OpenOffice.org when the Corporatocracy attempted to do with that product.

Besides, Sitepoint.com caught me with this story the other day, one which I still choose to believe is based in fact, which stated that statistically Opera users had the highest IQ. The story has been debunked (apparently, after being threatened with legal action by IE and/or some of its more ardent supporters).

Anyway, I will be using Opera as my default browser since Firefox has turned into a Nazi Prison Camp. Having always been an "alternate" browser for me it has been promoted. And as such will have Anon Tippler's Linux Notes always at the forefront of my web based activities.

I've learned how to migrate with relative ease and will always flee corporate control for FLOSS. I realize Opera is likely not structured much differently than Firefox but, at this point, is still allowing me control over what happens on my machines. It is time for us to collectively stand up to corporations and state clearly for the record: YOU WILL NOT CONTROL OUR LIVES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!

I hope that I'm not alone in this attitude... and can't imagine a world in which I would be!

GoodNews! Help me keep Opera as my default browser

The Opera widgets are intended as "stand-alone" apps that utilise Opera as the engine. It's only since the introduction of "Extensions" that Opera can now start to compete with Firefox. There will obviously be a lag, but the Extension catalogue has grown a lot faster than the Widgets.
