Fedora 8 Wireless Network Setup - iwl3945

Long time no see! smile

After a long time of using Archlinux, I decided to switch to Fedora 8 once again.
Once I logged in for the first time, i was able to automatically connect to my home wireless connection, but strangely enough this did not happen upon the next boot. I tried to fix it carefully configuring my wireless network card (based on the iwl3945 module) but had no success (it keeps throwing me a dump message that some parameters cannot be set).

I decided to fix my problem with the use of the NetworkManager service, something that in the past, when i was using Archlinux, was done following carefully the steps provided by the Archlinux wiki. I thought it would be quite the same, and indeed it was.

So, lets move on to the solution of the problem. It is just a matter of some simple commands (run as root):

  • service network stop
  • service NetworkManager start
  • service NetworkManagerDispatcher start
  • chkconfig --level 345 network off
  • chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManager on
  • chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManagerDispatcher on
  • chkconfig --level 345 bluetooth off <--This one is just not necessary
  • mv `ls /etc/rc5.d/ | grep hal` /etc/rc5.d/S45haldaemon
  • echo 'options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1'>>/etc/modprobe.conf
  • system-config-network and Edit the wireless device. Then, tick as follows: System-config-network settings

That's it. You should now be able to connect to your network, upon service (or full) reboot.

No more time

I currently have no time in order to post more comments etc, because i am working on my diploma thesis. In a few weeks i will come back with a mini review of Arch linux, a linux distribution that has totally conviced me in terms of usability and performance!! C U soon smile
