Cinco De Mayo

May 5, 2008 The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.

So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

Cinco History

Cinco De Mayo in my town.
There was a big show of people, hundreds of them all in an area covering about 2 city blocks. Food was everywhere…mostly Mexican style, live bands at each end of the mall, and a lot of venders selling (or trying to sell) everything from auto insurance to pots and pans. To me, the venders reminded me of carneys at a side show. The funny thing was listening to a Mexican rap group…seem odd to me.

Tomorrow things will continue and I hope to get some photos of the Flamenco Dancers.

I’ll add more of this tomorrow, til then enjoy the photos:
Cinco De Mayo in my town

OMG...there were so many people there today (Sunday May 4, 2008) you couldn't breath. The last 10 photos at the above link are some photos I took today. Sorry, there were no Flamenco Dancers, or if there were I missed them....damn. Of those 10 photos, the very last 4 are of the end of Cinco De Mayo. The crowd had thinned out and the venderes were shutting down. Now the clean up crew goes to work. Tomorrow, when we all wake, Fullton Mall will be as though it all never happened.
