AP Photo/Bernat ArmangueFrom Eurosport: 'Danilo Di Luca took the leader's gold jersey in the Vuelta after an impressive victory in the first mountain stage of this year's race. The 30-year-old Italian beat young Slovenian Janez Brajkovic to the line after a 178km trek which crossed three major climbs before the final ascent to the ski station at Covatilla. General classification favourites Carlos Sastre and Alejandro Valverde finished together in fifth and sixth place, 22 seconds behind, but the 18km special category climb in the Sierra de Béjar took its toll with last year's winner Denis Menchov, Tour de France champion-elect Oscar Pereiro plus Alexandre Vinokourov and Iban Mayo all losing large chunks of time.'
