Although he's 51 now, mountain bike racing pioneer Ned Overend hasn't stopped redefining his goals as an athlete. The day before his birthday recently, he competed in the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, finishing second. In 2005, Overend placed fourth in the same race, just two seconds behind the third-place finisher more than 20 years his junior. This time, his second-place time of 54 minutes, 41 seconds was an improvement over his '05 performance, and gave him the course record in the master's division. "I was hoping to improve it a little bit more, but maybe I'll save that for subsequent years..." Concord Monitor story / Ned Overend's home page
