Well we didn't get the apartment we wanted as a first choice.
No idea why they chose someone else but maybe, everything else being equal, they went with the person without pets ...? No way of knowing.

When we were looking for a new place last summer, I routinely would call about a place and have it rented even before the visning. It's HARD finding a place. I'm sorry you didn't get it. Major bummer.

it can certainly be frustrating, and then just the right place is available -- good luck -- good patience.
