Adventures In Inspiration

Overheard

At the Library.

teenager girl #1: She called my Mom and told her to take me to the Doctor.

teenage girl #2: You know that was going around about you last year, right? That you had AIDS and STD's and Peripheral Artery Disease!

teenage girl #1: And I am not pregnant!

Holy moly. And that, ladies and gentleman, is the problem with prescription medication being advertised on television. I'm not sure if these commercials are purely an American scourge . . . but I fear that gossiping teenagers worldwide could soon be confused if this threat is not contained. I cannot tell you how many commercials for PAD medicines I have seen in the last few weeks, but I'm sure these girls have seen them too . . .
Not to mention how incredibly awkward it is to watch commercials for viagra and the like sitting next to my 88 year old grandfather!:eyes:

All credit for thinking to post this absurd conversation goes purely to This Post on Overheard in New York featuring the dreamy CNN anchor, Anderson Cooper.

What's with this guy? My ex thought the world of him, despite the fact that his name is fake, and his sexuality excluded her. Personally, I see through him like a screen door...

"how incredibly awkward it is to watch commercials for viagra and the like sitting next to my 88 year old grandfather!" lol I'm a bit lost in this post, but thought this was funny. (maybe don't watch TV with gramps, go for a walk instead :D ) my mom got remarried at age 80 after being widowed for over 20 years... imagine my thoughts leaving her that wedding night, driving off with them waving to us in the distance... my children must have been thinking, hmmm I wonder how they will celebrate?! I wondered the same, but common sense and dignity told me... and now that I'm over 40, I know better than to think that sort of thing necessarily dies down with age  :D sometimes things, like wine, just get better with age...

sorry, couldn't resist

well, I don't know very much about anderson cooper to be honest, just think he's cute, but I suppose the presentation of an image often takes women in, irrespective of sexual orientations, any celebrity could fit, but i cant help but think of rock hudson for an example.

Ha! I need to go for walks for sure, I wish I could do that with my grandpa, but he can't ambulate freely any more.
I have a new appreciation for golf and football now to spend some time together. Perhaps we could take walks when he gets his much anticipated hover-round, maybe even to the grand canyon like the commercials. ha!

As for the post, I'd never even heard of peripheral artery disease until the commercials for medications for it, and I thought it was funny these girls had included it in their list of rumored afflictions.
I hate commercials for medicine. I just don't think medicine should be a moneymaking advertising scheme, but for the best care for a person . . . I wonder if this happens commonly other places, esp wonder if there is a need for medication commercials in countries with different health care systems.

Jess, when I was growing up, it was a huge NO NO for doctors or lawyers to advertise. It just was not done. And these prescription drug commercials didn't start showing up till recent past. Now one sees lawyers soliciting cases and pharmaceutical houses touting their medications and it is just pure greed. The pharmaceutical houses are richer than anyone, but they always want more.

barefoot_muse 11. October 2009, 20:39

I wish it was not done now. I think it borders on unethical for doctors and lawyers to advertise. I think it is entirely unethical for prescription drugs to be advertised either on tv or in doctors offices through giveaways and gifts.

Samples have always been a part of the drug companys schpiel. How do you get someone to try something new and possibly revolutionary?
I do agree on all your other points, though.

barefoot_muse 11. October 2009, 22:55

Well I concede that samples are part of it, and they can be good esp when you don't have insurance. I might have gotten a bit overzealous in my righteous indignation.

Yes, my pulmonologist has kept me supplied the last two years with Advair, which is pricey, even with my Medicare Part D Drug plan. If I had to pay for it out of my pocket, it would cost me $270-280 per month. No way could I pay for it.
