Why is Bear Spray is Better Than a Gun?

Some people might assume that a large gun can be used to fend off any charging bears that might attack someone while in the wild. After all, a gun can be extremely painful and even deadly. However, a non-lethal bear spray is a better option to go with. There are many good reasons why a bear spray is a better product to use.

The first reason is that a bear pepper spray is not going to harm the bear but will rather cause the bear to become irritated. The bear will be irritated from the stinging and hot sensation that comes with the spray. It is a temporary effect that will keep the bear from trying to attack any further but it may also be used to keep bears from becoming hostile.
Speaking of which, it is often difficult to take down a bear with a single gunshot. A large bear will only become threatened and disoriented if the bear experiences extreme pain from a gunshot. This means that the bear could still attack the person who is using the spray to begin with.

In fact the United States Fish and Wildlife Service completed a study surrounding bear spray and found that bears are less likely to attack people after they have been shot at with bear spray than if they were shot at with guns.
There’s also the legal consideration that comes with bear spray. Bear spray is a legal product that is safe to use because it is a non-lethal material that only causes short-term damage. A person who shoots a bear may be fined a few thousand dollars or sent to jail for a few weeks. This is all depending on the circumstances involved with the shooting. This could be especially worse if the bear is an endangered species like the grizzly bear.

Finally, there is the common sense factor. A gun is always going to be dangerous no matter who is carrying it. A can of spray can at least be sealed and controlled carefully. It will not seriously harm anyone if it accidentally went off but it is going to be irritating. This is still a better consequence than death.
There is a strong need to use bear spray instead of a gun when it comes to defending oneself while in bear country. This is not only with safety in mind but also with legal points in hand.
