When is True Crime not a True Crime?

When it is True Crime New York?

OKay I have an admission to make. After publically stating I liked True Crime Streets of LA then publically saying I hated it, then spending the next two years in UGVM being taken the piss out of, I did actually buy the new sequel - True Crime New York.

It was only £20 in Gamestation s deal of the week so thought I would give it a bash. Well what I can say? It is a vast improvement over the previous game. Long gone are the branching storylines where your game ended after 5 missions. It has a brand new structure which makes it alot more welcoming to play. If you fail a mission now, some missions will give you the chance to look elsewhere for new leads. Obviously this does not happen in the case of death, but you do get the chance to automatically replay a mission from the start instead of respawning miles away (ala GTA). The fighting moves have also had an overhaul and you can easily switch fighting styles with left/right dpad.

New York looks great, even though I have the ps2 version, I am impressed with the graphics. The buildings are not so beautiful, but the sunlight and the tarmac on the roads show great detail. I assume the xbox version would look much better.

There has been alot of talk about glitches in the game, well I can say I have not had a single glitch which has ruined gameplay or forced me to start a mission again. Yes there are the odd graphical glitches and camera problems but they are never a problem. There are some framerate problems when driving but strangely enough when driving at top speed there does not seem to be any at all.

Storyline wise, it is set up with 3 major storylines interlaced with side missions to do to gain information from informants. Plus there are the random crimes to deal with if you so desire. You can move up in rank and with this comes access to better vehicles and weapons. You can gain new fighting moves at local dojos. Plus you can change your clothes and hairstyle, oh and buy new music tracks from stores. The main missions are a bit samey and repetitive but the side things have more variety.

Buy or rent or pass, its up to you.
