Hunting the Ubuntu

I installed Ubuntu (linux) operating system alongside windows XP. I always avoided variatins of linux as they used to be very complicated to use and not user friendly.
This new Ubuntu is touted to be user friendly so thought I would give it a go.

Install and setup was a breeze. It installed fine with no problems most of it was straightforward. Setting up partitions to get it to work alongside XP was not complicated but does require a little knowledge of partitions to know what to delete and create.

The only problem I had was setting up the wireless network. it recognised my wireless card and the signal was there but no connection. After a day of seeking help I finally fixed it. The normal wired connection worked out of the box.

Moving onto the operating system itself, it looks alot cleaner than XP. The menus are easy to navigate and programs are installed into groups. So you have an internet group, graphics group and so on.

It comes with loads of pre-installed programs and if you want to add something, you just go to "add applications" locate the program in the list (if its in their database) and select it. It will download it and install it for you. The database is quite big and covers a wide variety of stuff.

Overall I am quite impressed so far. Not keen on using Thunderbird as a newsreader but I might get on with it. There are others I could use so I might have a look around for something different.

The biggest draw with it though is lack of virus's. Whilst there are virus's for linux there are not many at all so its a much more secure system.

I certainly will not be giving up XP for the time being, it will I am sure have better functionality for other things - like my digital camera - I have not tested that yet.
