FreeMind is a free and open-source Java-based (hence, platform neutral) mind mapping tool with a very primitive feature-set. Nevertheless, it answers all my personal needs. Have a look at it. You'll like it. If you didn't, you might want to give MindJet's MindManager a try (Windows-only.)
