Regarding the article: “Oversight vs. privacy” [opinion, Dec1]
As the saying goes: nobody knows if you are a dog, the anonymity in surfing internet attracts enormous people around the world. Thus when the real-name blog registration plan was brought up recently, it caused public concern. There’s a great deal of controversy about the plan. Some people believe that carrying out this plan will reduce the online frame-ups, slanders and crimes and so on. But others do not think this way. For my part, I’m for the former.
It’s true that somehow the real-name system limits people’s freedom of expressing anything they want, but it makes people more responsible to what they’ve said or done. There’re some people who send computer worms for kicks. Others use personal information to change someone’s pass-words, and then send trouble-making internet messages from that account. Still others build hate sites targeting certain people or groups. And all these are done under anonymity. So, isn’t that unveiling these people does our society good? Besides, some people are afraid that the system may infringe upon their privacy and I don’t think it is necessary. Because the “real-name” doesn’t mean that you should give your true name, you may use pseudonyms to register as you want.
All in all, for your own sake and for others’, this real-name registration plan provides benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
