Situating at 1500 to 1800 meters average altitude, Sapa owns an invaluable asset, that is a pure and cool climate, very similar with climate of Temperate Zone, with mean temperature is about 15 to 18 C degree.
Sapa has Phanxipang mountain is 3143 meters high on Hoanglienson chain. It called that because there is only place where Hoanglien tree grows. Hoanglien is valuable and rare medicine. Besides, this chain is a country of many precious woods like oil pine tree(thông dầu?
) of many kind of animal as francolin, bear, monkey, chamois and many other kinds of medicine, … etc.
There are 136 kinds of bird, 56 kinds of animal and 553 sorts of insect in Hoanglienson national forest. In addition, among them, 37 kinds of animal have names in Vietnam’s Red Book. Hoanglienson forest has 864 sorts of plant, 183 kinds is used for medicine.
Dim and distant, Sapa was a small tableland named “Lồ Suối Tủng”. In 1987, France colony government decided to open one investigation about ethnic nations in highland. First investigative deputation came to Laocai province in 1898.
In winter 0f 1903, while carrying out measuring to built map, explorers of Indo-China geographical station did find out landscape of Lồ Suối Tủng tableland and Sa Pả village. This even marked the cradle of Sapa town.
In 1905, French collected first infomations and datas about geography, climate, floristic composition … Sapa has known about cool and pure air, and gorgeous scenery. So French begun building the first villas in there.
In 1920, Hanoi-Laocai railroad was finished and Sapa was considered as the summer capital of the North, Vietnam. Totally, French has built here nearly 300 villas.
Sapa was damaged a lot in the china-Vietnamese border war 1979. Thousands kilometers square of pine forest was burned, many old villas built by French were destroyed also. In 90 decade of last century, Sapa was rebuilt again. Many new hotel, villas have been put up. Visitors to Sapa increased from 2000 visitors in 1991 to 60000 visitors in 2002.
Sapa with the residence of six ethnic nations, each nation has own cultural feature. The most famous thing of Sapa is only kermess takes place one time per year. Folks who live far from there have to start on journey from Saturday and that night is time for everybody have fun together with folksongs of H’ Mong , Dao nations, with consonant, beautiful melodies of lip instrument, of flutes, of H’Mong pan pipes and wine of old people … and this fair is named” Love fair”
In conclusion, Sapa simply is an unforgetable place of Vietnam.
