BROKEWIND MOUNTAIN

Hi folks, week 3 and the odd couple are in beautiful Sitka waiting for the ferry to Juneau. Slept out under the stars on 2 ferries...humpback whales, porpoises, eggs over easy etc. Kato's Kave ( a bar) in Petersburg was nearly our downfall...a cross between the House of the Rising Sun and Eigg tearoom. Hired a Buick with Alaska plates and behind the wheel was Paul and explored the magnificent Mitkof Island. Alaska Brewery is very, very good indeed but the Yanks are paranoid about booze, but not about food. Blimey there are some fat b......s up here. They eat crap by the bucket-full. John and I are feasting on fresh fish ( salmon, halibut, black cod, prawns etc) and he likes to eat girl food too ( yoghurt, muesli, fruit etc). Yesterday he shaved his legs and washed his hired bike and had a day out. He certainly looked like an Olympic cyclist to me despite the slight damage to his homemade lemon curd tart.
Sitka is a 300 year old Russian town and Petersburg is Norwegian ( are you taking notes? ).John is keen on camping at Mendenhall Glacier nr Juneau and eat nuts and berries; me I'll be in a downtown bar in Juneau enjoying a cultural exchange with the locals. Seriously though he is the ideal travelling companion, laid back, untroubled, almost deaf and partially sighted, which is a nice contrast to my edgy, caustic, grumpy self.
Backpackingly yours,
The guys

Glad you're having a great time, feeling pretty jealous to be honest! Been working in the kitchen loads at home, but i don't mind it. The Marshalls got back on thursday and me Joe and Bill took Liz to blues, was well funny, Liz was a ledge on the dance floor. Wickerman festival was amazing, good to see Tim and Joe and everyone. Plus I went to a kind of day festival in Deans gate in the centre of Manchester on saturday, was really smart cos part of the city centre was just all baracaded off. And on friday Jim was up for Tom's birthday and all your babies were together, loved it!
Anyway, speak to you soon, love Cath x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
