There are some mythic elements to the life of Ingrid Pitt that is sometimes conflicting, depending on what source you are reading. There is the fantastic story of how she was born Ingoushka Petrov in 1937 to Polish parents while her mother was being transported to a concentration camp in Germany during the war. Another source keeps the concentration camp story but gives the date of 1943 for her birth, while yet another source claims Pitt herself lists her birth date as November of 1945, when the war was well over for Germany as well as Japan and the camps were abolished. YOU CAN'T GO ON KILLING FOREVER She grew up separated until the age of ten from her parents and was reunited with them later in Berlin by the Red Cross. In 1962 she escaped East Germany by swimming across the Spree River and worked as a waitress supporting herself and her daughter while pursuing a career in acting. Whatever is true, false or exaggerated only adds to her dynamic charm and charisma. She has had a few small roles in main stream films such as David Lean's epic Doctor Zhivago and Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood, but it was her work for James Carreras and Hammer films that has helped her achieve and maintain her status as a genuine cult film icon for decades now. Her ample cleavage, east European beauty and perfectly upturned nose made her a perfect Hammer scream queen. A couple of her greatest roles were as the lesbian vampire Carmilla in The Vampire Lovers (with Peter Cushing in yet another great vampire hunter role) and Countess Dracula, where she plays Elizabeth Bathory, the most prolific murderess in history and inspiration for countless b-movies and goth bands.. PERVERTED CREATURES OF THE NIGHT She has authored a couple books about her life in films and is a black belt in karate. I hope the images I found and edited do her the justice she deserves. She was one of the early pioneers of the whole Euro-Lesbian vampire movie craze that flourished in the 70's. She was a real gem and she will no doubt reappear from time to time in the Café. A selection of really nice pictures of saultry Tennessee girl Bettie Page (or sometimes Betty Page if you are searching the net). There were really two types of photos from Bettie and one was the cheese cake style that Bunny Yeager did and the other was the “dark” stuff by Irving Klaw that got her into a bit of trouble later on. Some fans are divided on which represented the “true” Bettie while I have always felt both did. I have to admit that I like the dark, bondage stuff with Bettie while I cannot say I usually prefer this style from that period due to the quality. Or maybe I do prefer it but worry what people might say about me behind my back. But some of the dark style images with her were simply great photographs and Bettie’s radiant personality comes out in all of them. Klaw was essentially a "noir" phogograher of sorts but could take good pictures. The bottom two pictures with the stuffed leopard are from Yeager I believe while the others are from her infamous New York City work. She is simply too sexy for words and it is easy to see why she was 2nd only to Marilyn Monroe in the 1950’s as the most photographed model the US. Below is a link to her really excellent looking and easy to navigate webpage. It has improved vastly since the last time I checked it out.
Also included are links to pages for Irving Klaw and Bunny Yeager to show the diversity of their work and how they both saw Bettie from different angles that helped create her angel-devil mystique.
A simple photo tribute to the sexy and statuesque Julie Newmar. I suppose by today's near anorexic requirements for sex goddess status she may be too flawed but she is perfect in my slim book of requirements. I am not familiar with her work really outside the Batman TV series and the Gregory Peck film Mekenna's Gold but she was impressive in both of those. She radiated self confidence and it was no doubt boosted by her personal interest in martial arts like Judo and Akido. There are other posts dedicated here at the Cafe if you care to search for them. Have fun.
HAROLD LLOYD'S 3-D NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY Less famous historically than charismatic Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd is nonetheless considered a silent film innovator and genius as well. His films include The Freshman, The Kid Brother and Safety Last from which comes the iconic image of him hanging over Manhattan from the hands of a clock. Lloyd retired from film making and pursued his other great passion 3-D photography is reported to have traveled the globe and snapped around 300,000 slides. He took landscapes and still-lifes but what him became famous for were his glamour shots of models and Hollywood stars, including some great shots of Marilyn Monroe. A new book has been published that includes a set of 3-D glasses to enhance your viewing pleasure. There is no 3-D technology here at the Uranium Café but I did manage to find a few samples of his work. These photographs below are of the most famous pin up model of the 50’s Bettie Page. FASTER PUSSYCAT, KIILL!KILL! (1965) The Old Man: You girls a bunch of nudists or are you just short of clothes?
Billie: I'm of legal age for whiskey, voting and loving. Now the next election is two years away, and my love life ain't getting much better, so how about some of that one-hundred-percent!
Gas Station Attendant: [staring at Varla's chest as he pumps gas] Just passing through, huh? Boy, that motor's sure hot! You gals really must have been moving on these little machines. Yessir, the thrill of the open road. New places, new people, new sights of interest. Now that's what I believe in, seeing America first! Varla: You won't see much of it lookin' there, Columbus!
Gas Station Attendant: Yes ma'am, what can I do for you today? Varla: Just your job, squirrel. Fill it up!
Tommy: Look, I don't know what the hell your point is, but... Varla: The point is of no return and you've reached it!
The Old Man: Women! They let 'em vote, smoke and drive - even put 'em in pants! And what happens? A Democrat for president!
Rosie: Alright, you wash... now I'm gonna spin-a-dry you!
Billie: You really should be AM and FM. You one-band broads are a drag!
Billie: Oh, you're cute... like a velvet glove cast in iron.
Narrator: Ladies and gentlemen - welcome to violence!
Varla: I never try anything. I just do it. Wanna try me?
Varla: You're all shook up, aren't you, baby?
Tommy: I work on this baby the same way, trying to get maximum performance.
Kirk: [to Varla] You're a beautiful animal... and I'm weak, and I want you.
Billie: [Billie throws Rosie a can of beer to calm her down] Here Rosie baby, pop the top before you blow your own!
Tommy: Been running some timing trials? Varla: We KNOW how fast WE can go. You can time that heap with an hour-glass. Linda: Someone mention my figure?
FASTER PUSSYCAT, KILL! KILL! WHAT YOU GOT FOR SIN VARLA A short but good quality clip from the middle of Faster Pussycat. The b/w photography is excellent and the acting here is tough and rugged, just like the hardened vixens who are delivering the lines. I am searching for a good quality trailer online to embed the link here but so far no luck. I did have one posted in this place previously but that clip is no longer available for some reason. When a watchable trailer emerges I will get on it and post it here for you. So I changed the trailer to this pretty high quality clip from what is about the middle of the film. It is a tough talkin' scene between Varla and Linda on how to the handle the hapless hostage if she gets out of line. Great stuff.
Barbara Steele had a face that could either be divinely innocent or frightenly evil. She seemed to always resent being type cast as a horror movie queen but her legions of fans have never been disappointed. I suppose her greatest role was the witch in Mario Bava’s classic of atmospheric horror Black Sunday. Though she may have looked Italian and sounded so because her voice was often dubbed she was born in England. She did some Roger Corman films as well the most notable being the Pit and the Pendulum. She retired from films finally after many let downs and miscastings trying to get her out of the horror genre and now pursues her first true love painting. She has a special face and the video clip from Castle of Blood displays it in all its symmetrical beauty. FOR A MOMENT I THOUGHT YOUR HEART HAD STOPPED
Some scenes from one of my all time favorite movies, Russ Meyer’s “Ode to the violence in women”, the flawless Faster Pussycat. Kill! Kill! Tura Satana plays the streetwise and savvy Varla who not only looks tough but is tough and I can prove it. Just watch the video clip below from youtube.com where she snaps a wimpy jocks neck after she taunts him mercilessly for losing a hotrod race. She then kidnaps his virginal girlfriend and bullies the girl with insults and quasi-lesbian innuendo. She is so cool.
THE POINT IS OF NO RETURN! AND YOU'VE REACHED IT! There is no doubt in my mind that this was Meyer’s finest film. He wrote, directed, edited ad photographed the entire thing. He did some other entertaining films as well but none went as deep into the primal psyche as Faster Pussycat did. This is not a review of the film but I strongly recommend seeing it if you can. I have not seen it in years and am long over due for a viewing. The acting is on the mark for this type of movie and the dialog is not off by one syllable. The women are all hot and dangerous and the men are scheming cripples or demented body builders or weak in the knees for sultry bad girl Varla.
I am not finished extolling the grandness of this movie and have been searching for some slick dialog from it but have not found a site with any yet. But fear not dear reader it is my duty to find you good snippets from Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! And by God I will. Because “I never try anything, I just do it!"
