Steve Reeves as Hercules

I was lucky while back in Seattle to have had a chance to see a couple of Steve Reeves Hercules movies in a small theater called The Sanctuary at legendary Scarecrow Videos. These old movies were good clean and campy fun. The dialog is irreproducable. I feel Reeves was the coolest Hercules simpy because of his looks alone, though it is debatable whether he actually starred in the best Hercules movies.

Reg Park as Hercules

Reg Park was the number two coolest Hercules, next to Steve Reeves. I have not seen any of these movies in so long I can not really tell you what one was about right now except that they are lot so of fun and a must see for escapist adventure. I got to see Hercules in the Haunted World, perhaps the best Hercules movie of all and directed by Mario Bava, at the Sanctuary in Seattle. The print was beautiful. If you only see one Hercules movie see this one. There are a few newer movies that have succeeded in this area but most are just blantantly ridiculous, trying too hard to be campy. A couple great newer Sword and Sandal films are Conan with Arnold (not brand new, but not camp classic either) and The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas, a film my Psychotronic movie buddy in Seattle Matt Gehringer turned me to. This is a sadly overlooked genre that should not waste away.

Here are a couple publicity stills taken during the filming of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Pretty and poised Julia Adams made a single piece white swim suit sexier than any thong bikini could ever hope to be. Here she poses with the film’s male co-star whose name I do not remember, Richard Calrson perhaps, but I like these pictures a lot.
