September 2009

I had intended to update at various times during September but never did it. It seems other things got in the way. So, I will summarize the month with this entry.
September is special in that our family celebrates 2 birthdays. Emily celebrated her 23rd birthday on the 3rd. We took her out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant and we all enjoyed a fine meal and multiple margaritas. She still enjoys her work at the hospice. Her new boyfriend, Grant, came along too and gave her a baseball autographed by Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Rita celebrated her 50th birthday on the 16th. A couple of her sisters came in to town the weekend prior to her birthday. They had a girls night out. I joined the party Saturday afternoon at a winery in Augusta where we enjoyed sandwiches, a veggie tray, and a cheese tray along with various wines. We later went to a biker bar and enjoyed the band playing there and ended the day at a friends house for supper. Her actual birthday was celebrated after work with dinner at a casino where she played a few machines and came out a little over a dollar ahead.
Rita and I took a week of vacation in September. We went with another couple (Bob & Sue) and rented a cabin in Gatlinburg, TN. We drove around in the Smokey Mountains one day. We stopped several times to take pictures but it was rather foggy so we didn't see as much as we did a little over a year ago. The next day was spent at Dollywood. We enjoyed some bluegrass music and ate at a great chicken buffet.
Evenings were spent at the cabin. There was a hot tub on the deck which we enjoyed a lot. We always ate breakfast at the cabin. Rita saw a bear from the deck of the cabin one morning which she was very excited about. We all saw a bear cross a road as we were heading to Asheville, NC.
In Asheville we we walked around the older part of town which contains various shops and places to eat. We ate at a beergarden which offered a large selection of beers. The next day we spent at the Biltmore Mansion on a self-guided walking tour. We rented an audio player which gave more information about the various rooms we were looking at than was contained in the guide book. We took a tour of their winery too and enjoyed a few samples. We ate at the bistro by the winery and then sat outside and listened to a guy singing and playing guitar.
We drove all the way from Asheville to home in one day. Bob and I split the driving but it was a long day. It was nice to have all of Sunday to relax and get ready to go back to work. The week back to work has been long. We are looking forward to this weekend to do a few chores around the house and relax a little too.
