Alex de Grassi - Altiplano (1987)

After recording a series of critically acclaimed solo acoustic guitar LPs for Windham Hill, fingerstylist Alex de Grassi ventured into ensemble fusion with this eclectic 1987 recording for RCA's Novus label. It's a well-rounded work that enticingly explores everything from jazz-inflected impressionism to Eastern modalism, though my favourite track is a lightly folk-flavoured solo showcase titled 'McCormick', a sparkling ballad that demonstrates de Grassi's brilliant technique and natural feel for melody.

I only had a casssette version of this at first, but finally managed to track down a CD copy in the early '90s. Sadly, it's out of print now.
