The Rebirth of the Cool

Blue is the New Black

Getting More Interesting: New Platform APIs

, , , ...

The technology world is getting more interesting with new platforms and APIs. Facebook started this craze by opening up their social networking platform. MySpace is now following and Google, for its yet-to-be-announced social networking play, will have an open API as well.

In terms of mobile hardware, two leading companies are Apple and Nokia. Apple will be unveiling its SDK for the iPhone and iPod Touch in February 2008. Nokia just released their N810 Tablet Device which fully implements the Ovi Platform for development. On a side note, Palm will be bringing its Linux-based Palm OS II at the end of 2008 (far away, but developers will presumably be able to use the SDK earlier than that).

On the desktop/web front, Adobe and Microsoft are the two leading players. Both companies are developing RIA technology that can bridge and make the desktop and web world seamless. The Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) platform is based on Flash, while Microsoft Silverlight is a completely new product.

The major web/search companies of the world, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, are also extending their platform and reach with APIs. Yahoo recently announced its plan to open itself up so that more third-party developers can take advantage of Yahoo's platform and infrastructure. Google is intended to remain the dominant force in the web world, by extending its platform and APIs into mobile, social networking, healthcare and mapping technologies. Microsoft's Windows Live initiative has gained some traction, and are releasing new technologies almost on a weekly basis.

These are certainly exciting times to be a developer, with the number of platforms and APIs continuing to increase!

Web Browsers

, , , ...

I like Opera more and more. Opera 9.5 Alpha really is a lot faster (especially Javascript!). Each of the three leading "alternative" browsers to IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari, have their own strengths. Firefox is the all-encompassing browser with strong support for cross-platform compatibility. Opera is lightweight and compact, with strong adherence to web standards. Safari has a super fast rendering engine and I personally like its font rendering much more than the other browsers. Competition really is the key to innovation!

Opera - More Than Just a Browser

Discovered the My Opera Community today. It's a community for Opera-loving folks and includes a blog and a photo sharing service. Will try it out for a while and see how it compares with other blogging platforms. One thing I've noticed already - the blog post editor is extremely fast. I like it!
