Blueridge guitars What Kind of Guitar Course Should I Get?

, ,

There are loads of different ways you can learn to play the guitar now. You could read any of the hundreds of books that promise to teach you, or you could buy some DVDs, you could pay a subscription to get online videos, or you could go the old fashioned route and hire a tutor, but which way is best? We look at each option below:

Books: I love learning things from books, if I want to read up on business, marketing, health stuff or even how to win at poker, then I would turn to a good book, but for something as physical as learning guitar then I don't think this is the right option. I have a guitar book next to me now and it is good for learning theory and checking up on chord forms etc, but it is a lot easier to learn something when you actually see someone do it in person or on a video compared to having a bunch of pictures with numbers on telling you how to move your arm etc.

DVDs: This format is great, you can take the DVDs anywhere that you have a DVD player and then you get taken through the lessons on your TV where the instructor shows you how to do things and gets you to practice them at the same time too. You also usually get a workbook if you buy a full DVD course to help you practice without having to watch the DVDs.

Membership websites: These have started to spring up all over the place now, there are loads of them! You have to pay a monthly fee with these to get access to the content, which is good because it means they are constantly adding more content to the site, but bad because if you stop paying then you lose access to everything. They are usually packed full of hundreds of videos which means there is a lot they can teach you, but it does mean you are stuck in front of your computer when you want to learn anything.

Tutor: The last option is of course to seek out a tutor, and in many ways this is the best option because they can spot if you are doing something wrong and correct you as you learn, plus they can answer any questions you have right there and then. The bad points are the cost, at $40 a time it will soon start to add up, and also the difference between tutors, you could get a fantastic one, but you could also get a really awful one that you hate seeing so you stop going or need to find someone else.

It is up to you which one you choose, there is no point in choosing one based on which you think would be best (like having a tutor) if you can't afford it or hate the idea of it, instead go for the type which appeals to you the most, that way you are more likely to stick with it. The only one that I would steer clear of is learning just from a book, you could use a book in addition to one of the other things mentioned above, but I wouldn't recommend them on their own.
