I've been dipping into Fred Silver's Glimpses of Stornoway lately. I'd known that there were Dutch fishermen up in the islands in the past, but I hadn't realised that Lewis had been offered to the Dutch by the Royalists in return for Dutch support against Cromwell... just think how things might have turned out - we could all be winning speed-skating medals at the Olympics right now. We'd have a damn site better football team too.
