Vampire Academy: Spirit Bound

Chapter 1

There's a big difference between death threats and love letters- even if the person writing the death threats still claims to actually love you. Of course, considering I once tried to kill someone I loved, maybe I had no right to judge.

Today's letter had been perfectly timed, not that I should have expected any less. I'd read it four times so far, and even though I was running late, I couldn't help but read it a fifth time.

My dearest Rose,

One of the few downsides to being awakened is that we no longer require sleep; therefore we also no longer dream. It's a shame, because if I could dream, I know I'd dream about you. I'd dream about the way you smell and how your dark hair feels like silk between my fingers. I'd dream about the smoothness of your skin and the fierceness of your lips when we kiss.

Without dreams, I have to be content with my own imagination– which is almost as good. I can picture all of those things perfectly, as well as how it'll be when I take your life from this world.

It's something I regret having to do, but you've made my choice inevitable. Your refusal to join me in eternal life and love leaves no other course of action, and I can't allow someone as dangerous as you to live. Besides, even if I forced your awakening, you now have so many enemies among the Strigoi that one of them would kill you. If you must die, it'll be by my hand. No one else's.

Nonetheless, I wish you well today as you take your trials–not that you need any luck. If they're actually making you take them, it's a waste of everyone's time. You're the best in that group, and by this evening you'll wear your promise mark. Of course, that means you'll be all that much more of a challenge when we meet again–which I'll definitely enjoy.

And we will be meeting again. With graduation, you'll be turned out of the Academy, and once you're outside the wards, I'll find you. There is no place in this world you can hide from me. I'm watching.

Love,
Dimitri

Despite his "warm wishes" I didn't really find the letter inspiring as I tossed it onto my bed and blearily left the room. I tried not to let his words get to me, though it was kind of impossible to not be creeped out by something like that. There is no place in this world you can hide from me.

I didn't doubt it. I knew Dimitri had spies. Since my former instructor-turned-lover had been turned into an evil, undead vampire, he'd also become a sort of leader among them– something I'd helped speed along when I killed off his former boss. I suspected a lot of his spies were humans, watching for me to step outside my school's borders. No Strigoi could have stayed on a twenty-four-hour stakeout. Humans could, and I'd recently learned that plenty of humans were willing to serve the Strigoi in exchange for the promise of being turned someday. Those humans considered eternal life worth corrupting their souls and killing off others to survive. Those humans made me sick.

But the humans weren't what made my steps falter as I walked through grass that had turned bright green with summer's touch. It was Dimitri. Always Dimitri. Dimitri, the man I'd loved. Dimitri, the Strigoi I wanted to save. Dimitri, the monster I'd most likely have to kill. The love we'd shared always burned within me, no matter how often I told myself to move on, no matter how much the world did think I'd moved on. He was always with me, always on my mind, always making me question myself.

"You look like you're ready to face an army."

I shifted out of my dark thoughts. I'd been so fixated on Dimitri and his letter that I'd been walking across campus, oblivious to the world, and hadn't noticed my best friend, Lissa, falling into step with me, a teasing smile on her face. Her catching me by surprise was a rarity because we shared a psychic bond, one that always kept me aware of her presence and feelings. I had to be pretty distracted to not notice her, and if ever there was a distraction, it was someone wanting to kill me.

I gave Lissa what I hoped was a convincing smile. She knew what had happened to Dimitri and how he was now waiting to kill me after I'd tried–and failed–to kill him. Nonetheless, the letters I got from him every week worried her, and she had enough to deal with in her life without my undead stalker to add to the list.

"I kind of am facing an army," I pointed out. It was early evening, but late summer still found the sun up in the Montana sky, bathing us in golden light as we walked. I loved it, but as a Moroi–a peaceful, living vampire–Lissa would eventually grow weak and uncomfortable in it.

She laughed and tossed her platinum hair over one shoulder. The sun lit up the pale color into angelic brilliance. "I suppose. I didn't think you'd really be all that worried."

I could understand her reasoning. Even Dimitri had said these would be a waste of my time. After all, I'd gone to Russia to search for him and had faced real Strigoi–killing a number of them on my own. Maybe I shouldn't have been afraid of the upcoming tests, but all the fanfare and expectation suddenly pressed in upon me. My heart rate increased. What if I couldn't do it? What if I wasn't as good as I thought I was? The guardians who would challenge me out here might not be true Strigoi, but they were skilled and had been fighting a lot longer than me. Arrogance could get me into a lot of trouble, and if I failed, I'd be doing it in front of all the people who cared about me. All the people who had such faith in me.

One other thing also concerned me.

"I'm worried about how these grades will affect my future," I said. That was the truth. The trials were the final exam for a novice guardian like me. They ensured I could graduate from St. Vladimir's Academy and take my place with true guardians who defended Moroi from the Strigoi. The trials pretty much decided which Moroi a guardian would be assigned to.

Through our bond, I felt Lissa's compassion–and her worry. "Alberta thinks there's a good chance we can stay together–that you'll still be my guardian."

I grimaced. "I think Alberta was saying that to keep me in school." I'd dropped out to hunt Dimitri a few months ago and then returned–something that didn't look good on my academic record. There was also the small fact that the Moroi queen, Tatiana, hated me and would probably be going out of her way to influence my assignment–but that was another story. "I think Alberta knows the only way they'd let me protect you is if I was the last guardian on earth. And even then, my odds would still be pretty slim."

Ahead of us, the roar of a crowd grew loud. One of the school's many sports fields had been transformed into an arena on par with something from Roman gladiatorial days. The bleachers had been built up, expanded from simple wooden seats to luxuriously cushioned benches with awnings to shade the Moroi from the sun. Banners surrounded the field, their bright colors visible from here as they whipped in the wind. I couldn't see them yet, but I knew there would be some type of barracks built near the stadium's entrance where novices waited, nerves on edge. The field itself would have turned into an obstacle course of dangerous tests. And from the sound of those deafening cheers, plenty were already there to witness this event.

"I'm not giving up hope," Lissa said. Through the bond, I knew she meant it. It was one of the wonderful things about her–a steadfast faith and optimism that weathered the most terrible ordeals. It was a sharp contrast to my recent cynicism.

"And I've got something that might help you out today."

She came to a stop and reached into her jeans pocket, producing a small silver ring scattered with tiny stones that looked like peridots. I didn't need any bond to understand what she was offering.

"Oh, Liss...I don't know. I don't want any, um, unfair advantage."

Lissa rolled her eyes. "That's not the problem, and you know it. This one's fine, I swear."

The ring she offered me was a charm, infused with the rare type of magic she wielded. All Moroi had control of one of five elements: earth, air, water, fire, or spirit. Spirit was the rarest– so rare, it had been forgotten over the centuries. Then Lissa and a few others had recently surfaced with it. Unlike the other elements, which were more physical in nature, spirit was tied into the mind and all sorts of psychic phenomena. No one fully understood it.

Making charms with spirit was something Lissa had only recently begun to experiment with–and she wasn't very good at it. Her best spirit ability was healing, so she kept trying to make healing charms. The last one had been a bracelet that singed my arm.

"This one works. Only a little, but it'll help keep the darkness away during the trial."

She spoke lightly, but we both knew the seriousness of her words. With all of spirit's gifts came a cost: a darkness that showed itself now as anger and confusion, and eventually led to insanity. Darkness that sometimes bled over into me through our bond. Lissa and I had been told that with charms and her healing, we could fight it off. That was also something we had yet to master.

I gave her a faint smile, moved by her concern, and accepted the ring. It didn't scald my hand, which I took as a promising sign. It was tiny and only fit on my pinky. I felt nothing whatsoever as it slid on. Sometimes that happened with healing charms. Or it could mean the ring was completely ineffectual. Either way, no harm done.

"Thanks," I said. I felt delight sweep through her, and we continued walking.

I held my hand out before me, admiring the way the green stones glittered. Jewelry wasn't a great idea in the kind of physical ordeals I'd be facing, but I would have gloves on to cover it.

"Hard to believe that after this, we'll be done here and out in the real world," I mused aloud, not really considering my words.

Beside me, Lissa stiffened, and I immediately regretted speaking. "Being out in the real world" meant Lissa and I were going to undertake a task she'd–unhappily–promised to help me with a couple months ago.

While in Siberia, I'd learned there might be a way to restore Dimitri back to being a dhampir like me. It was a long shot– possibly a lie–and considering the way he was fixated on killing me, I had no illusions that I would have any other choice but to kill him if it came down to him or me. But if there was a way I might save him before that happened, I had to find out.

Unfortunately, the only lead we had to making this miracle come true was through a criminal. Not just any criminal either: Victor Dashkov, a royal Moroi who had tortured Lissa and committed all sorts of other atrocities that had made our lives hell. Justice had been served, and Victor was locked away in prison, which complicated things. We'd learned that so long as he was destined for a life behind bars, he saw no reason to share what he knew about his half-brother–the only person who had once allegedly saved a Strigoi. I'd decided– possibly illogically–that Victor might give up the information if we offered him the one thing no one else could: freedom.

This idea was not foolproof, for a number of reasons. First, I didn't know if it would work. That was kind of a big thing. Second, I had no idea how to stage a prison break, let alone where his prison even was. And finally, there was the fact that we would be releasing our mortal enemy. That was devastating enough to me, let alone Lissa. Yet as much as the idea troubled her–and believe me, it did–she'd firmly sworn she would help me. I'd offered to free her from the promise dozens of times in the last couple months, but she'd stood firm. Of course, considering we had no way to even find the prison, her promise might not matter in the end.

I tried to fill the awkward silence between us, explaining instead that I'd really meant we'd be able to celebrate her birthday in style next week. My attempts were interrupted by Stan, one of my longtime instructors. "Hathaway!" he barked, coming from the direction of the field. "Nice of you to join us. Get in there now!"

Thoughts of Victor vanished from Lissa's mind. Lissa gave me a quick hug. "Good luck," she whispered. "Not that you need it."

Stan's expression told me that this ten-second goodbye was ten seconds too long. I gave Lissa a grin by way of thanks, and then she headed off to find our friends in the stands while I scurried after Stan.

"You're lucky you aren't one of the first ones," he growled. "People were even making bets about whether you'd show."

"Really?" I asked cheerfully. "What kind of odds are there on that? Because I can still change my mind and put down my own bet. Make a little pocket money."

His narrowed eyes shot me a warning that needed no words as we entered the waiting area adjacent to the field, across from the stands. It had always amazed me in past years how much work went into these trials, and I was no less impressed now as I saw it up close. The barrack that novices waited in was constructed out of wood, complete with a roof. The structure looked as though it had been part of the stadium forever. It had been built with remarkable speed and would be taken down equally quickly once the trials were over. A doorway about three people wide gave a partial glimpse onto the field, where one of my classmates was waiting anxiously for her name to be called. All sorts of obstacles were set up there, challenges to test balance and coordination while still having to battle and elude the adult guardians who would be lurking around objects and corners. Wooden walls had been constructed on one end of the field, creating a dark and confusing maze. Nets and shaky platforms hung across other areas, designed to test just how well we could fight under difficult conditions.

A few of the other novices crowded the doorway, hoping to get an advantage by watching those who went ahead of them. Not me. I would go in there blind, content to take on whatever they threw before me. Studying the course now would simply make me overthink and panic. Calm was what I needed now.

So I leaned against one of the barrack walls and watched those around me. It appeared that I really had been the last to show up, and I wondered if people had actually lost money betting on me. Some of my classmates whispered in clusters. Some were doing stretches and warm-up exercises. Others stood with instructors who had been mentors. Those teachers spoke intently to their students, giving last-minute words of advice. I kept hearing words like focus and calm down.

Seeing the instructors made my heart clench. Not so long ago, that was how I'd pictured this day. I'd imagined Dimitri and me standing together, with him telling me to take this seriously and not to lose my cool when I was out on the field. Alberta had done a fair amount of mentoring for me since I'd returned from Russia, but as captain, she was out on the field herself now, busy with all sorts of responsibilities. She had no time to come in here and hold my hand. Friends of mine who might have offered comfort–Eddie, Meredith, and others– were wrapped up in their own fears. I was alone.

Without her or Dimitri–or, well, anyone–I felt a surprising ache of loneliness flow through me. This wasn't right. I shouldn't have been alone. Dimitri should have been here with me. That's how it was supposed to have been. Closing my eyes, I allowed myself to pretend he was really there, only inches away as we spoke.

"Don't worry, comrade. I can do this blindfolded. Hell, maybe I actually will. Do you have anything I can use? If you're nice to me, I'll even let you tie it on." Since this fantasy would have taken place after we'd slept together, there was a strong possibility that he would have later helped me take off that blindfold–among other things.

I could perfectly picture the exasperated shake of his head that would earn me. "Rose, I swear, sometimes it feels like every day with you is my own personal trial."

But I knew he'd smile anyway, and the look of pride and encouragement he'd give me as I headed toward the field would be all I needed to get through the tests–

"Are you meditating?"

I opened my eyes, astonished at the voice. "Mom? What are you doing here?"

My mother, Janine Hathaway, stood in front of me. She was just a few inches shorter than me but had enough fight in her for someone twice my size. The dangerous look on her tanned face dared anyone to bring on a challenge. She gave me a wry smile and put one hand on her hip.

"Did you honestly think I wouldn't come to watch you?"

"I don't know," I admitted, feeling kind of guilty for doubting her. She and I hadn't had much contact over the years, and it was only recent events–most of them bad–that had begun to reestablish our connection. Most of the time, I still didn't know how to feel about her. I oscillated between a little girl's need for her absent mother and a teenager's resentment over abandonment. I also wasn't entirely sure if I'd forgiven her for the time she "accidentally" punched me in a mock fight. "I figured you'd have, you know, more important things to do."

"There's no way I could miss this." She inclined her head toward the stands, making her auburn curls sway. "Neither could your father."

"What?"

I hurried toward the doorway and peered out onto the fields. My view of the stands wasn't fantastic, thanks to all the obstacles on the field, but it was good enough. There he was: Abe Mazur. He was easy to spot, with his black beard and mustache, as well as the emerald green scarf knotted over his dress shirt. I could even barely make out the glint of his gold earring. He had to be melting in this heat, but I figured it would take more than a little sweat for him to tame down his flashy fashion sense.

If my relationship with my mother was sketchy, my relationship with my father was practically nonexistent. I'd met him back in May, and even then, it wasn't until after I'd gotten back that I found out I was his daughter. All dhampirs had one Moroi parent, and he was mine. I still wasn't sure how I felt about him. Most of his background remained a mystery, but there were plenty of rumors that he was involved with illegal business. People also acted like he was the kneecap-breaking type, and though I'd seen little evidence of this, I didn't find it surprising. In Russia, they called him Zmey: the serpent.

While I stared at him in astonishment, my mom strolled over to my side. "He'll be happy you made it in time," she said. "He's running some big wager on whether you'd show. He put his money on you, if that makes you feel any better."

I groaned. "Of course. Of course he'd be the bookie behind the pool. I should have known as soon as–" My jaw dropped. "Is he talking to Adrian?"

Yup. Sitting beside Abe was Adrian Ivashkov–my more-orless boyfriend. Adrian was a royal Moroi–and another spirit user like Lissa. He'd been crazy about me (and often just crazy) ever since we first met, but I'd had eyes only for Dimitri. After the failure in Russia, I'd returned and promised to give Adrian a shot. To my surprise, things had been...good between us. Great, even. He'd written me up a proposal of why dating him was a sound decision. It had included things like "I'll give up cigarettes unless I really, really need one" and "I'll unleash romantic surprises every week, such as: an impromptu picnic, roses, or a trip to Paris–but not actually any of those things because now they're not surprises."

Being with him wasn't like it had been with Dimitri, but then, I supposed, no two relationships could ever be exactly alike. They were different men, after all. I still woke up all the time, aching over the loss of Dimitri and our love. I tormented myself over my failure to kill him in Siberia and free him from his undead state. Still, that despair didn't mean my romantic life was over–something it had taken me a while to accept. Moving on was hard, but Adrian did make me happy. And for now, that was enough.

But that didn't necessarily mean I wanted him cozying up to my pirate mobster father either.

"He's a bad influence!" I protested.

My mother snorted. "I doubt Adrian will influence Abe that much."

"Not Adrian! Abe. Adrian's trying to be on good behavior. Abe will mess everything up." Along with smoking, Adrian had sworn he'd quit drinking and other vices in his dating proposal. I squinted at him and Abe across the crowded stands, trying to figure out what topic could be so interesting. "What are they talking about?"

"I think that's the least of your problems right now." Janine Hathaway was nothing if not practical. "Worry less about them and more about that field."

"Do you think they're talking about me?"

"Rose!" My mother gave me a light punch on the arm, and I dragged my eyes back to her. "You have to take this seriously. Keep calm, and don't get distracted."

Her words were so like what I'd imagined Dimitri saying that a small smile crept onto my face. I wasn't alone out here after all.

"What's so funny?" she asked warily.

"Nothing," I said, giving her a hug. She was stiff at first and then relaxed, actually hugging me back briefly before stepping away. "I'm glad you're here."

My mother wasn't the overly affectionate type, and I'd caught her off guard. "Well," she said, obviously flustered, "I told you I wouldn't miss this."

I glanced back at the stands. "Abe, on the other hand, I'm not so sure of."

Or...wait. An odd idea came to me. No, not so odd, actually. Shady or not, Abe had connections–ones extensive enough to slip a message to Victor Dashkov in prison. Abe had been the one to ask for info about Robert Doru, Victor's spiritwielding brother, as a favor to me. When Victor had sent back the message saying he had no reason to help Abe with what he needed, I'd promptly written off my father's assistance and jumped to my prison-break idea. But now–

"Rosemarie Hathaway!"

It was Alberta who called me, her voice ringing loud and clear. It was like a trumpet, a call to battle. All thoughts of Abe and Adrian–and yes, even Dimitri–vanished from my mind. I think my mother wished me good luck, but the exact wording was lost on me as I strode toward Alberta and the field. Adrenaline surged through me. All my attention was now on what lay ahead: the test that would finally make me a guardian.

Fallen

Fallen (Fallen, #1) Fallen by Lauren Kate

This is a tricky book 1st of all because as you read you say Daniel Grigori is a vampire (i was like oh his a vampire, because is all about the vampires now and i thought he was one for like half of the book but let me tell you this he is not). Daniel is cursed to fall in love with the same girl every seventeen years for eternity. The girl is Lucinda aka"Luce",who has just entered Sword & Cross, a reform school for troubled teens, after the mysterious death of a classmate that she perhaps caused, but doesn't remember. As soon as she sees Daniel, she's drawn to him, and soon feels increasingly certain they have met before, and she'll do anything to try and discover his secrets.Daniel and Luce fall for each other time after time.Daniel Grigori is hot and mysterious that makes Edward cullen look like nothing it makes him look like a vampire(lol).Unfortunately, Luce is a pretty dumb heroine. She spends the entire book mooning over a guy(daniel) that is mean to her every chance he gets and then mopes around feeling sorry for herself.I agreed with one of the "villains" when she said tells luce, "In this lifetime you're nothing more than you appear to be: a stupid, selfish, ignorant, spoiled little girl who thinks the world lives or dies on whether she gets to go out with some good-looking boy at school...I'd still relish this moment...killing you.". and at times you dont even know who the villains are.........but i do love this book!! it you like Twilight your going to love this book!! but if you dont like Twilight your going to love this book as well!!

Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy is a vampire novel written by Richelle Mead. It is the first novel in the Vampire Academy series, and is followed by Frostbite. It is written in a first-person perspective following the main character, Rose Hathaway and her time at St. Vladimir's Academy, a vampire boarding school

The novel begins with Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway, a half-human/half-vampire dhampir, and her best friend Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir, a Moroi princess. They have been on the run for two years from the authorities of the St. Vladimir's Academy where they went to school. Because of some animal killings, Rose implies that Lissa was in some kind of danger while at St. Vladimir's, and as her unofficial guardian (a protector against the Strigoi-the immortal and evil vampires keen to destroy the Moroi race and turn them into one of their own kind) orchestrated their escape from the heavily guarded school and whatever was haunting Lissa there. However, they are caught by a group of the schools guardians led by Dimitri Belikov, and are sent back to the Academy in Montana. Rose and Lissa's lives are complicated because they were in a car accident a few years before, which claimed the lives of Lissa's parents and brother, but left the girls unhurt (it is later revealed that Rose died in the accident as well, and Lissa unknowingly healed her). After the accident, the two girls developed a rare bond which allows Rose to feel Lissa's emotions and sometimes see things through her. Lissa also finds herself capable of healing things, the result of a rare spirit magic she possesses, which a previous teacher with the same ability, Ms. Karp, urged Rose to help hide. Once back at the Academy, Rose and Lissa adjust back to the school's work and complex social life. Rose finds herself behind on her guardian education, and is put to take extra practices with Dimitri if she wants to become Lissa's other official guardian after graduation. While training with Dimitri, Rose finds herself increasingly attracted to him.

Lissa begins to receive threats that reminds her of the danger she felt before leaving school. The frightening threats continue as Rose works hard to keep Lissa's fragile state intact from the danger as well as gossip from classmates like Mia Rinaldi, and ones she perceives as dangerous, such as Christian Ozera, whom Lissa strikes up a secret friendship with. On the night of the school dance, Lissa is kidnapped by a group of guardians under orders from her dying uncle, Prince Victor, who has been planning this since managing, with the help of Natalie his daughter, to discover that LIssa has healing abilities. He therefore has Lissa abducted from the school, and goes as far as ensnaring Rose and Dimitri with a lust spell, in hopes that they will be too distracted with each other for Rose to find Lissa through their bond-this goes as far as Rose almost losing her virginity to Dimitri. However, his plan is foiled by Dimitri, who manages to break the spell just in time. -literally only secondas away from having sex-, and they set off to save Lissa. After Victor forcibly torturing her with air and suffocating her, Lissa had no choice but to heal him, nearly killing herself from the strain of the power. She is saved by Rose and the stow-away Christian who was hurt by the guardians trying to get Lissa, and Victor is apprehended. While the guardians take down Victor though, Rose and Christian set off to find Lissa. They are soon set on by psi-hounds-evil dog like things which only respond to moroi- Christian is supposed to die after being attacked by one but is saved by Lissa who regained her strength by drinking some of Rose's blood. After all of that Dimitri tells her that what happened between them only happened because of the spell and nothing else, while Rose insists that she felt something between them, although she doesn't tell him this. Rose has a talk with Victor that reveals how the lust spell between her and Dimitri wouldn't have worked unless they actually loved each other. While being held, Victor manages to get his Academy student daughter Natalie to turn into a Strigoi, which is done by an evil deed--in her case, killing another Moroi. As a powerful Strigoi, Natalie attempts to free her father and almost kills Rose, who is saved by Dimitri, who then kills Natalie. On the way to the medical clinic Dimitri confesses that if he let himself love Rose he wouldn't be able to fully protect Lissa. They wonder how she could have turned Strigoi and find out that Ms. Karp had become one as a result of possessing spirit. The novel ends with Lissa working to keep her spirit magic ability under control, and Rose being forced to ignore the feelings that she shares with Dimitri and vice versa.

Frostbite

Frostbite is a vampire novel written by Richelle Mead. It is the second novel in the Vampire Academy series, and was preceded by Vampire Academy. It continues the story of the main character, Rose Hathaway and her education in becoming a Guardian.

The story begins with Rose and Dimitri traveling to meet the legendary guardian Arthur Schoenberg for Rose's Qualifier Exam. Once they arrive at the home of the Moroi family he protects, they discover a bloody massacre of the entire family and their guardians, including Arthur, by Strigoi. Rose also discovers a broken ward, a magical device which Strigoi cannot touch, meaning the Strigoi must have had human assistance in their attack. The massacre puts the vampire community on high alert, and to keep the students at St. Vladimir's Academy safe, they take all the students to a luxury ski lodge. Usually used by Moroi royalty, this happens afterChristmas.

Rose is already on edge due to her conflicting feelings about the people around her. Worried about the mental health of her best friend Lissa, she also becomes jealous when she doesn't get to spend more time with her anymore now that she spends most of her time with her boyfriend Christian. Things don't improve as her mother Janine Hathaway, whom she hasn't seen in five years, shows up at school with the Moroi she is protecting, creating tension between the two. Rose and her mother argue a lot, causing Janine to punch Rose in the eye. Moreover, Rose's feelings for her mentor Dimitri have not subsided. Rose then meets Christians aunt Tasha Ozera through Dimitri as the two already know each other. Tension builds between Rose and Dimitri causing them to kiss in a training session. Rose becomes heartbroken when she finds out that Christians aunt has taken a romantic interest in Dimitri and has asked him to be her guardian, with benefits.

During the ski trip, panic sets in when news of another Strigoi attack on a royal Moroi family spreads, where one of the dead was Mia's mother. During her stay at the lodge, Rose meets a Moroi named Adrian Ivashkov, who shows obvious interest in Rose, and later becomes friendly with Lissa after they both discover they are spirit users. During Adrian's pool party, Mason, his friend Eddie, and Mia begin voicing their opinions about hunting Strigoi. After a heated argument with Dimitri, Rose tells Mason confidential information that Dimitri had given her before about the possible whereabouts of the Strigoi's hideouts. Using Rose's information, Mia, Mason, and Eddie sneak out of the ski lodge and travel to Spokane, Washington, to hunt down the Strigoi themselves. Rose discovers their plan and together with Christian, run out to stop them.

Rose and Christian find the group and convince them to return to the lodge. However, they are ambushed by humans-who work for the strigoi-, who hold them captive for days, threatening to kill them. The five of them soon meet the head strigoi behind all the massacres and the two moroi are given a choice, life or death. If they choose to live then they must choose either Eddie, Mason or Rose to drink from, turning them automatically into strigoi. The moroi who doesn't choose to do this will become a snack for the two strigoi along with the two remaining dhampirs. They starve the two Moroi's, even taunting them with one of the strigoi drinking from Eddie until he becomes as addicted as a feeder. Shadow Kiss

Shadow Kiss is the third book in the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. It was officially released on November 13, 2008

As the graduation approaches, the novices at St. Vladimir's are assigned a Moroi to guard for six weeks as part of their training. Rose, who was expecting to get Lissa, gets assigned guard to Christian Ozera while her friend Eddie gets assigned to Lissa. During this time, Rose's behavior changes: her temper flares more rapidly, she's having dark thoughts, and most significantly she starts seeing ghosts, most frequently of her old friend Mason. Rose gets off to a shaky start in her training, beginning with her seeing Mason's ghost when she is being tested by Stan, which causes her to neglect two Moroi around her. The incident almost leads Rose to be removed from the program. Rose does not tell anyone about her visions, even after being directly asked by Dimitri.

Meanwhile, Victor Dashkov's trial is coming up, and Rose is determined to testify, although the queen and guardians would not allow it, and even Dimitri is unable to get Rose and Lissa to go. Eventually, Adrian Ivashkov, who happens to be the queen's grandnephew, exerts his influence with her to get Rose, Lissa, and Christian to testify against Victor at the Moroi Court in Pennsylvania. Rose meets up with former classmate Mia and gets a note from Victor Dashkov, who threatens to tell the court about Rose and Dimitri's romance. Rose goes to Dimitri with the note, and he gets them to the prison to meet with Victor, who tells them about his plans for a revolution in the Moroi world with Lissa at the head of it, and mocks Rose and Dimitri's stance on guardians, telling them they are slaves to Moroi. After Dimitri's promise to personally have him killed if he tells,Victor seems unsure of rather he would tell or not. During the trial, though, Victor makes a veiled reference to Rose and Dimitri's hook-up, but no one else understands it, and he is ultimately found guilty by the queen. During the time at Court, the queen speaks to Lissa about her future and asks her to attend college at Court, while she chastises Rose about the untrue romance rumors circulating about her and Adrian. After the queen's speech Lissa surprises Rose with a spa treatment. There they meet a male blood whore, who happens to be the queen's lover, and he takes the two to see a fortune teller. Lissa has a fortune that describes how she will be a great leader. Rose is given the obvious fortune: "You will fight the undead". Rose gets angry at her fortune because it is simply one obvious sentence, when Dimitri comes in and is offered a fortune as well. His is "You will lose what you value most, so treasure it while you can".

On the flight back to school, Rose experiences her worst ghost vision to date, she sees people from the bloody massacre she witnessed earlier in the year, mason, guardians that were killed at victors cabin and Lissa's family, she then screams until she blacks out and awakens at St. Vladimir's, where she eventually confesses to seeing ghosts. Dimitri is hurt and surprised that she did not tell him before about the visions, and promises to help her figure them out. Alberta, Dimitri and Dr. Olendzki all agree to Rose continuing her program for half-time only and to see a counselor once a week. After one of her counseling sessions Rose is set on by the guardians pretending to be strigoi and manages to defeat all three which include Dimitri. Rose continues to suffer erratic behavior, which cultivates when Lissa gets tortured by Ralf and Jesse for not joining their "the hand" group (which consists of powerful Moroi at school), and siphons her dark anger to Rose through the bond. Rose, in turn, now has the dark anger, and she lashes out furiously at everyone, even Alberta and Dimitri after they take Ralf and Jesse out of the way. Dimitri takes her to a cabin at the edge of campus in attempt to calm her down, which he manages to do by declaring he loves her and knows she can break the anger. They end up making love in the cabin, and admit their love for each other. As they leave the cabin, Rose is approached by Mason again, who tells her that Strigoi are coming. They are then attacked and Rose runs back to campus to warn the other guardians. A battle ensues. Rose breaks her guard and decides to go and find Christian who was at the chapel when the Strigoi attacked. She soon finds him and they are then set on by two strigoi, which Rose manages to stake one and Christian saves Roses' life by setting the other one on fire. They both then go on a hunting spree and kill many strigoi. The fight ends at daybreak, and it is discovered that a number of students and teachers had been taken by the rest of the Strigoi. Rose manages to use her ghost visions to question Mason about the whereabouts of the Strigoi, and he directs her to caves at the edge of campus. As the guardians wait for the attack, Rose and Dimitri talk about their future, where they agree to go public with their relationship after Rose graduates and Dimitri gets reassigned to another Moroi. He decides this because he fears that his fortune will come true. Rose decides this simply because she loves him.

The guardians and several fire-using Moroi prepare to attack the caves and rescue the kidnapped. After a tense battle with many killed on both sides, all of the hostages are freed, and the remaining guardians attempt to leave the cave. Dimitri gets taken down by a Strigoi, and Rose's attempts to rescue him are thwarted by Stan and her mother, who tell Rose there is nothing more they can do. Rose mourns after the attack, and even hysterically attempts to get Lissa to bring Dimitri back to life with her spirit magic, causing Lissa to finally see that Rose has been in love with Dimitri for a long time. Rose's worst fears are confirmed when she asks Mason if Dimitri has turned Strigoi, which he confirms. Rose remembers what his fortune said, and what he lost that he valued most was his soul. On her eighteenth birthday, Rose leaves St. Vladimir's Academy to hunt down Dimitri and kill him, knowing he would have wanted to be killed if he became a Strigoi. Mason has to leave Rose to go to the other world, and Rose is left on her own to kill the man she loves. In the process leaving Lissa behind.

Blood Promise

Blood Promise is the fourth book in the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. The release date is scheduled for August 2009. In this book Rose sets off to find and kill Dimitri, abandoning Lissa in the process.

DIMITRI'S HEART HAS GONE DARK

Now Rose must journey to the ends of the earth to find--and kill--her one true love...

Or has the time come to join him?

BOUND BY LOVE, BUT SWORN TO KILL...

The rest of the world had considered Dimitri dead. And to a certain extent, he was. But I hadn't been able to forget a conversation he and I had once had. We'd both agreed that we'd rather be dead—truly dead—than walk the world as Strigoi. It was time to honor our words.

Guardian Rose Hathaway's life will never be the same.

The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck, a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters . . . Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir's and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love?

Rose must decide whether Dimitri is worth enough to turn herself into Strigoi and live with him forever. Lissa must try to not fall into depression again and for her not to do that, Rose must stay with her and take care of her. With the world messed up, how will Rose ever make the right decision to save everyone she cares about and herself?

Book Review - Angels & Demons by Dan Brown...............Review by W. R. Greer

Like the majority of readers, I read Angels & Demons by Dan Brown after reading The Da Vinci Code. I would venture that most people reading this review are asking the question, "How does Angels & Demons compare to The Da Vinci Code?" The short answer is that they're very similar. If you enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, you should enjoy Angels & Demons.

Angels & Demons introduces the character of Robert Langdon, professor of religious iconology and art history at Harvard University. As the novel begins, he's awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call from Maximilian Kohler, the director of CERN, the world's largest scientific research facility in Geneva, Switzerland. One of their top physicists had been murdered, with his chest branded with the word "Illuminati." Since Langdon is an expert on the ancient secret society known as the Illuminati, he's asked to help solve the murder. A high tech X-33 plane transports Langdon from Massachusetts to Switzerland in a little more than an hour.

The murder victim is Leonardo Vetra. Not only is he one of the world's leading physicists, he's a Catholic priest. He's a priest who has adopted a daughter, Vittoria, who is also a scientist at CERN. This was the largest suspension of disbelief for me, a man who is a priest, a father, and a top physicist, but accepting it sets the rest of the story in motion. Vetra and his daughter were using the world's largest particle accelerator to create antimatter, and then suspend the antimatter properly in canisters so that it doesn't interact with matter. If a canister is removed from the electrical system which keeps the matter and antimatter separated, then backup batteries will serve the same purpose for 24 hours. When those 24 hours expire, the two will collide in an instantaneous explosion of unprecedented power.

Lenoardo Vetra created the antimatter to simulate the Big Bang. In his mind, this would show proof that God exists, being able to create new matter and antimatter in the same way God created the universe. Vetra's murder, though, allows one of the canisters to be stolen. The question of who stole the canister and what they planned to do with it is soon answered. The canister is quickly found on a security camera in Vatican City, with its LEDs counting down the time until the batteries run out. The security camera, however, is nowhere to be found, leaving the canister's whereabouts a mystery too. Langdon and Vittoria Petra are quickly sent off to Rome and Vatican City, to help find the canister and return it to CERN before it explodes at midnight.

Not only does the canister threaten to destroy Vatican City, but with the recent death of the Pope, the cardinals of the Catholic Church are all within the city for the conclave to choose the new pope. They are all about to be locked within the Sistine Chapel where, according to church law, they must remain until a new pope is chosen. They are awaiting the preferiti, the four cardinals from four different European countries who are the preferred candidates to become the new pope. While Langdon and Vittoria are trying to convince the captain of the Swiss Guard and the camerlengo, the Pope's chamberlain who leads the church until the new pope is named, that the antimatter bomb is real, a phone call is received from a man who claims to be from the Illuminati. He has the four cardinals, which he will murder one by one, and then allow the bomb to destroy Vatican City, which houses not only the church hierarchy, but also its possessions and wealth. He has no demands; his only wish is the destruction of the Catholic Church in retribution for the church's treatment of scientists and the Illuminati over the centuries.

Langdon and Vittoria Vetra are in a race against time. They dig through archives and ancient mysteries to find clues, which also requires an extensive background in art history and religious symbology. This makes Robert Langdon the expert tour guide through all this arcane knowledge with his congenial and scholarly fashion, doing his best to educate without seeming superior with his own intelligence. Much like The Da Vinci Code, Langdon understands enough about each mystery to go in search of the missing pieces necessary to solve each puzzle, which leads him to the next one. Vittoria is beautiful, tough, intelligent, and determined to avenge her father's murder and keep the canister from exploding. The two of them are constantly one step behind the Illuminati, and once it's clear that the Swiss Guard and Vatican City have been penetrated by the ancient society, they don't know whom to trust. This leads them through churches, fountains, crypts, forgotten passages, secret passages, and catacombs. Death stalks them at every turn, in one form or another.

So it's time for the comparisons of Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code. In some ways, Angels & Demons has a more suspenseful storyline with the antimatter bomb and the race to prevent the destruction of Vatican City. Both share a hired assassin, a tough and beautiful woman as Langdon's sidekick who's mourning the murder of a loved one, and mysteries that require extensive knowledge of art history, religious symbology, and secret societies. Robert Langdon is a protagonist that you can't dislike in any way, with just enough vulnerability to go along with his intelligence and right amount of charm. Angels & Demons is a looser story. It takes longer to get going, each new puzzle takes longer to solve, and too much character background is given for too many characters. While Dan Brown's writing style will never be called literary, he's obviously matured as a writer between the two books. The chapters in The Da Vinci Code are shorter, tighter, and the suspense is never allowed to wane.

While some judicious editing might have made it a tighter and more focused novel, Angels & Demons is still a highly enjoyable read. For those who love plot-driven novels, and for those who love thrillers and mysteries full of strange bits of information that tie everything together, grab a copy of Angels & Demons and find a comfortable chair. It's time well spent.

Forever... by judy blume On December 18, 2008 Subbie English Banned Books Blog said

The book “Forever” by Judy Blume was banned as recently as 2005 in Pasadena, Texas a parent’s complaint concerning Forever resulted in thebook being removed from the city’s school libraries. In my opinion Forever is not a must read. Especially because it contains so much descriptive adolessent sex scenes.I think it should be read by an older age group. A lot of teenagers say it is a must read but I disagree completely. I am not saying that Blume is a bad author because as said by me and other people “Judy Blume is an excellent writer!” (author unknown)and has written many wonderful novels and best sellers. This book is pretty much a normal everyday romance story that goes a bit to far into the deatails. “It’s a classic from the 70’s thats pretty tame compared to some of todays literature”(Kate Pavao). The main character is a girl named Katerine who is in love with this guy named Michael. She thinks that she will love hiim forever but she doesn’t exactly think about the future with Michael. So she becomes sexually active with michael. I can understand exactly why this book is banned because it gives a too discriptive details about their activity which adolecents, in my opinion, shouldn’t have to deal with. There is also a guy named Michael. He pushes her into being sexually active and rushes her to it also without thinking how the relationship will turn out.Its not a hard book to read but I don’t recommened it for anyone under the age of 15 or 16. Also this book has too many scenes that may upset a lot of young readers. Overall I think this book is O.K. but has a few, well a lot of kinks that should have been worked out or specified for older readers. As an example a lot of the language is “dated”(Kate Pavao). Also if the book is meant to be in libraries for younger children it would ruin the whole plot so it wouldn’t be able to be in that library without being banned. When I read this book I got really concerned with this interesting girl, Katherine, and her motive for being in love with Michael and doing what she did. Then I was concerned with her stupidity and how she could have known a guy for 2 months and already be doing sexual activities with him. Further more I was discusted with her and her fail to keep her promise and love Michael, forever. In the sense that Blume is an excellent writer I was amazed at her ability to created such a dimwitted character. But as I said before it is an O.K. book.

forever... by judy blume summary

Katherine met Michael Wagner at a New Year Eve’s party. It seemed like instant attraction between the both of them, I think. Katherine feels that she has never felt so strongly about any guy before. With Michael, she’s nervous yet happy to be with him.

Just like the title - Forever, Katherine and Michael thought that their love would remain forever. Both admitted that they really loved each other and Katherine decided to go all the way with Michael. And just like what Katherine’s mom told her, ‘once you start having sex, you can’t go back to holding hands’. It’s completely true. Katherine and Michael can’t keep their hands off each other and are always finding opportunities to be alone together.

Then came summer time. Katherine’s dad insisted that she accepts a job to teach tennis at a camp, which Jamie, Katherine’s younger sister, is going to. Initially, Katherine is reluctant to spend 7 whole weeks away from Michael. She would miss him soooooo much! But, her dad would not take no for an answer. So, she went to camp. She and Michael kept in touch by writing letters everyday.

At the camp, Katherine meets new friends and is attracted to another guy. She feels guilty at first because she thought she was betraying Michael. However, when Michael went to the camp to see her, she decided to be honest with him.

When I visited Amazon.com, many reviewers claimed that this book is a must-read for teenagers so they would know about sex and first love. To me, the story was going fine, but when it came to the part where she fell for another guy, I felt funny. I mean, if she was soooo much in love with Michael, how could she fall for another guy so quickly? It seems to me that Katherine is fickle-minded and doesn’t know what she wants.

Well, this book is okay. It’s easy to read, and quick to finish

Waiting For You review

Title: Waiting For You
Author: Susane Colasanti
Release Date: May 14, 2009
Summary: At the beginning of her sophomore year, Marisa is ready for a fresh start and, more importantly, a boyfriend. So when the handsome and popular Derek asks her out, Marisa thinks her long wait for happiness is over. But several bumps in the road—including her parents' unexpected separation, a fight with her best friend, and a shocking disappointment in her relationship with Derek—test Marisa's ability to maintain her new outlook. Only the anonymous DJ, whose underground podcasts have the school's ear, seems to understand what Marisa is going through. But she has no idea who he is—or does she?
In this third romantic novel from Susane Colasanti, Marisa learns how to "be in the Now" and realizes that the love she's been waiting for has been right in front of her all along.
Review: I have read only one other novel by Susane Colasanti which was Take Me There. I really enjoyed it and it was a fun read.
Well Susane has yet again created a beautifully written book. This novel is cute, funny, emotional, just everything you can hope for a novel to be. This novel is also probably the truest books I have ever read. The characters and the plot seemed so real and I related so much. I felt like Susane was outside my window watching me and wrote the novel about my life but changed the names. =] I found myself crying at times because this book honestly helped me solve some problems I was dealing with.
Marisa's character was just a normal girl and I really liked that. She is just the average girl that experiences love then heartbreak and problems at home. Marisa is now up to one of my favorite characters in a book. Nash is just the sweetest guy ever. I wish there could be a guy like Nash out there. And finally Derek....*silence*.... All I'm saying is he is a perfect example of why I think all popular guys are jerks. But the characters in this book were so well written that I could see myself actually being friends with Marisa and Nash being my best guy friend.
So I recommend this book to every girl out there. Everyone can relate to this book one way or another and everyone will be having these problems. So this book is amazing and I love it, obviously. I give it a 5 out of 5. =]
