Odds and Ends from Another Life

Cool Viewer 1.21.6.0 Release 10

(20 Dec) Sound problems fixed for Cool Viewer 1.21.6.0 Release 10 including RLV 1.15.2, plus a number of improvements in the User Interface, ALT key for menu selection works again (enable in debug)

[Downloads removed - please use the latest versions]

The "Lindens" released the new official 1.21.6.0 viewer. And here comes it's Cool Viewer counterpart, including a lot of still needed fixes and features the official viewer probably will never have .

To install the Cool Viewer you need first to install a full version of the "official" LL 1.21.6.0 SecondLife viewer.

http://download-secondlife-com.s3.amazonaws.com/Second_Life_1-21-6-99587_Setup.exe

Then simply extract the content of this archive over the installation and replace all files with the ones in this archive. This turns it into an Cool Viewer.

http://files.myopera.com/boylane/files/SL/CoolViewer_i686_1_21_6_0_Release_10_exe_xml_only.zip

Additional fix to restore the "Beacons Always On" shortcut in the "View" menu is included. For older versions replace the existing menu_viewer.xml in C:\Program Files\SecondLife\skins\default\xui\en-us\ with this one: http://files.myopera.com/boylane/files/SL/menu_viewer.xml
This will be officially included in the next viewer release 1.22.

Here is also once again a full Cool Viewer, nothing to install, simply extract it into a directory of your choice (default is C:\Program Files\SecondLife). Please note that the following libraries and components are not included in the package as they are not redistributable. To get full functionality please copy them from the official Linden Labs 1.21 viewer:

llkdu.dll (Kakadu JPEG2000 library)
SLVoice.exe (Voice daemon)
SLVoiceAgent.exe
vivoxsdk.dll (Vivox Communications API)

The viewer will still run without them but with lower performance (OpenJPEG) and missing voice features.

(This is R3, to update to the latest CV please download the "exe_xml_only" version above and extract it over this one. Thats the same as you would convert a standard Linden viewer into a CV)

Crashs at startup are usually caused by not extracting all CV files to the correct place. Please install the normal RC first, make sure it works. Then extract the CV archive over it and replace all files.

Seems stable on my system - crashes are the same as the ones SL is inducing in others around me at least! No weirdness detected so far. Thanks for the hard work in the build!

Hmms, it reports as RestrainedLife viewer v1.10.5.2 (CV 1.19.1.4) and doesn't seem to have some of Marine's new features? (No shared folder for example...) I love the CVs and have used them exclusively and am totally appreciative of your providing them for us so hate to ask if there's any chance of incorporating the newer RL?

Looks like you downloaded a very old version. Please look at the top of the blog, there are the most recent downloads. The latest "official" one is 1.20.15.0.

Currently only the Linux version (which is not a CV) has the latest RLV 1.12.5 built in. The others will follow within the next hours as time allows.

Weirdness, nopes, I had downloaded the 1.21.2 1a from this post, but uninstalled and then reran the install again. The only thing I can guess is the shortcuts pointed to the wrong things? Of the two .exe files in the RC folder, one immediately crashed and the other ran, I made a new shortcut from that and voilà! :) Sorry for the wild goose...and thanks for the Cool Viewer goodness in the new form!

suezanne 6. October 2008, 03:14

I did a fresh install of the RC dowloaded using the link given here, then downloaded the CV zip file and extracted into the newly created Second Life Release Candidate foldor.

I ended up wirh two exe files, SecoondLifeReleaseCandidate.exe, and SecondLife.exe, and two shortcuts, a Second Life shortcut and a Second Life Release Candidate shortcut.

Running the Second Life exe file runs Cool Viewer. Running the Second Life Release Candidate exe crashes. Same with the shortcuts. Running the Second Life Release Candidate shortcut crashes, running the Second Life shortcut, which runs the SecondLife.exe file, runs the Cool Viewer.

This may be what is intended, but it doesn't make sense to me.

boylane 6. October 2008, 15:07

Sue, the RC uses per default SecondLifeReleaseCandidate.exe and .lnk whereas CV uses the standard SecondLife.exe naming. You can savely deleted the first two. They will always crash due to the xml's replaced by CV.

I thought that somebody had produced a viewer that allowed scripts to be saved to our local hard drives if desired. Do you know anything about this?

boylane 7. October 2008, 05:31

The patch doesn't work properly with the Windows version and the compiler I use. Besides that it is pretty useless as you can simply copy and paste. So I did not spend any time on it and simply excluded it.

Like all the other cool viewers it just crashes before the UI even loads. It's not I don't know how to install it, I can install and use Nicholaz fine and even Marines RLV. Unfortunately Marine has not yet made a 1.21.6 version.

boylane 22. October 2008, 02:39

You need to extract all files and replace the existing versions. Unlike Nicholaz and Marine's viewer that includes a number of xml files. If you don't do this it will crash as you wrote.

-Mazzy

boylane 16. November 2008, 17:08

You need to copy all files over the Linden viewer, not one by one. If you miss the xml's it will crash, regardless what else you do.

Just updated. Can no longer access the menus by tapping alt and pressing the underlined letters. Tapping alt now highlights File, then you can arrow to the desired menu. Same SL version, so this is a CV patch? Can it be turned off?

Also, been having trouble with the edit window lately, since before the update. Started about a week ago; not sure what chagned. When I right click and select edit the object is not selected. An empty edit window comes up. With the window open, objects are not selected when I click on them. I have to right click an object and select edit while the edit window is already open. This doesn't happen with my own objects.

When I'm preventing from talking or hearing in RL I get a ... followed by an asterisk on the next line.

boylane 3. December 2008, 09:34

@Anonymous 1

There is no ALT + key functionality in SL. ALT is used together with your mouse to move the camera around.

Also Edit works as it should.

Please check if you caught yourself a keylogger/virus/malware that manipulates your keyboard. It is not related to SL or Cool Viewer.

@Anonymous 2

I don't see an asterisk. The chat block works with 3 dots "..." as before. There was no change for this functionality.

Anonymous 4. December 2008, 05:33

Anonymous writes:

Alt used to work for the menus, but not like other programs. Instead of holding alt and hitting the key, you tap alt and see the underlined letters, then hit the letter you want. This did work in CV6.

boylane 4. December 2008, 16:32

@anonymous

There is no such ALT key functionality in any Windows version of SecondLife, either the official one or the CV in any release, including R6.

There's a debug setting for it. Don't remember turning it on, but I just found it. UseAltKeyForMenus will enable it. If you would try it in CV6 and 7, see if it works differently for you, and if there's a way to get CV6 functionality back, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Please try a fresh installation after complete uninstall / removal of user_settings. May be some old setting or a file you missed to replace.

Mm sad, i tried to run SL on my laptop but it had only a integrated graphicscard. At least it was running i screwed the graphics settings up to ultra settings and it closes now always with the message that my video card is unknown and that i have to ask the support for a solution blablablabla.. The client parameters "-safe" and "-noprobe" doesnt helps!
Any suggestion for a fast solution?
Oh, its a intel 965gm graphics on my lt.

When this cause is fixed i try to run the coolviewer :D

boylane 14. January 2009, 02:09

Mia, you are here in an old posting, first please go to the main blog and get the latest version of the viewer.

To fix your problem please delete the user_settings folder you find in
WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application Data\SecondLife\
Vista: C:\Users\<your account>\Appdata\roaming\secondlife\
Then start the viewer again and it should create a new configuration.

It doesnt works with deleting of this files ;( I deleted ALL FOLDERS named secondlife on my hd and cleaned the registry. Seems SL has set my last setting on the assets to the wrong settings. Sad that i forget how this debug-setting was named which ignores this settings and starts the client at the last login with default settings.

"Second Life is unable to run because your video card files did not install properly, are out of date, or unsupported hardware. Please make shure you have the latest video card drivers and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them.

If you continue to receive this message, contact customer service.

Move the blog where the "captcha"-shit does function properly.

boylane 14. January 2009, 03:58

Make sure you deleted all .xml files in the folders I mentioned, this will clear all previous settings and if it worked the first time it should work again.

For viewer version 1.20+ you need to use --safe or --noprobe (two dashes) for commandline parameters.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters

I found this regarding the your chipset. Not sure if it helps.

I maded it and all possibilities arent sucessfull. Now, after proper cleaing of ALL software entries/keys i defragmented my HD and after - thats the big enjoyment - i installed nicholaz' viewer over the LL-viewer. IT WORKS!
The official shit-viewer from linden quitted to run with always the same message (theposted above). Perhaps you make this thread sticky for later questions of other users who have the same problems on their notebook.
In addition to that it would be nice to know IF the coolviewer is installable over a viewer like nicholaz or able's edition. Better features with a more flexible viewer is a wish some SL-users have.

Do *not* use v1.19.1.4 or later viewers (i.e. Windlight) on unsupported graphic cards: either it will crash, or it will refuse to run.

Use the Cool SL Viewer v1.19.0.5 on old hardware.

Embedded graphic cards = old hardware, features and performance wise. Never, ever buy a computer with crappy Intel video chipset.

And no, 1.19.0.5 is still there (simply scroll down).

Overclocking is a possibiliy who doesnt exists on my laptop.

For this who arent to read or understand; ITS a notebook and lots of possibilities with different graphicscards arent available except you want to buy this crappy asian shit (asus, msi etc). ;)

boylane 15. January 2009, 01:52

@Mia

1) I told you to look at the main blog for a recent version. You refused. Your decision. Don't say the viewer is not there (1.19.0.5)

2) I gave you a link to a solution for possible (known) problems with that specific chipset (see above)

3) 965 is an integrated chipset graphics and therefore gets a performance penalty. It is not a discrete up to date graphics solution, therefore considered "old" hardware that has problems to cope with windlight rendering as you see.

4) As Henri wrote please use a non windlight renderer such as Nicholaz or CV 1.19.0.5 (any viewer 1.19.1.4 and later is windlight)

5) Don't mix viewer versions. You certainly can copy CV over Nicholaz and it works, but not vice versa as CV replaces many files. Always use the same versions!

6) I don't know what laptop you use, but it is certainly made in Asia! Same as CV for Windows. I suggest you don't use that "crappy asian shit" and stick with the official viewer.

Thanks!
