Rainbow Viewer Release 2
Tuesday, 28. April 2009, 12:08:55
[UPDATE 15 May] All new Rainbow Viewer in Release 2 with RLV 1.17, it comes with almost all the features of the latest Cool Viewer but with the official SL user interface. For the ones who like it
All you colourful people out there, I was listening to what you had to say

Please note that this however is not a Cool Viewer. Please don't bug Henri with problems. Try it out, enjoy it if it works for you and report eventual bugs back here. This is a second release and I am very happy about the positive response
To install the Rainbow Viewer you need to download and run the installer. I moved the files to coolviewer.googlecode.com due to continuous problems with the Opera blog. Hope it works for you. Please download and simply run the .exe file to start the installation.

MD5: 5ffa09c813a0a94b6dd7f7e622a708ca
SHA-1: 25fe95a8a02d89f0cd69a4796c7e13785089eba9
It will install the Rainbow Viewer into C:\Program Files\RainbowViewer and it should not mess up any existing Cool Viewer or Second Life installation. The following Application Data location is used for settings, logs and caching (in case of problems you may want to delete this folder manually to reset your viewer to default settings):
WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\<you>\Application Data\RainbowViewer\
Vista: C:\Users\<you>\Appdata\Roaming\RainbowViewer\
The installer will also try to automatically install non-redistributable components if you already have an existing SL or CV installation. If it works, be happy, if not please follow the README_IMPORTANT!!!.txt instructions.
Please start the Rainbow Viewer always with the included Rainbow Viewer.lnk shortcut only.
If you have an Nvidia or a newer ATi graphics card (HDxxxx series) you may want to try an optimized viewer executable that has certain OpenGL fixes and is optimized for SSE2 (will not run on older machines like AthlonXP). Just download and run the installer, it will replace your existing RainbowViewer.exe automatically.

Linux version (thanks a lot Balp!!)

IMPORTANT!!!
============
Please note that the following libraries and components are not included in the package as they are not redistributable. The installer will try to automatically pull them out of an existing installation of a SecondLife or CoolViewer on your machine. Please follow the prompt on the screen. Should it not work please copy them from an official Linden Labs SL 1.22.11 viewer into your C:\Program Files\RainbowViewer directory to get full functionality :
llkdu.dllKakadu JPEG2000 library
SLVoice.exeVoice components
vivoxsdk.dll
alut.dll
ortp.dll
The viewer will still run without them but with lower performance (OpenJPEG) and missing voice features.

Great work, just tried it out and love it. The "Cool" UI is so ... 90s ? Anyways, this is what I always wanted, the new fancy UI with the stability and performace of the Cool Edition - you got the best SL viewer here, please keep it going !
boylane # 28. April 2009, 15:09
But I'm happy you like it and thanks for the vote
SeloJacobus # 28. April 2009, 18:25
It works good to me and has both worlds bests
Anonymous # 29. April 2009, 00:08
Can i ask what bits of coolviewer are missing from this if any? And if the minimap colours can be edited?

see http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-10633 and http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11844 show the patch exists, as well as a few other fixes :)
boylane # 29. April 2009, 09:01
Thanks for that..pretty useless but nice to have feature
Anonymous # 29. April 2009, 11:18
very useful actually for colour blind people ;) i'd love to see it in main CV too :p

What I would love to see in CV is the avatar radar like in the GreenLife Emerald Viewer. It also have some other nice options. But I still run CV. :)

I think I might be the biggest dunce in the world. Installed the Rainbow viewer and love it but since I'm not techy, I can't figure out how to find those extra components that the readme file says I also need so I can copy them into the Rainbow. Is there a place that has the steps already written down?
and for the record, the MOST I get in the shelter is about 8 fps on a busy day. I went there to test it out really quick and had a whopping 12-13FSP and that with flexi's and such going. NICE!
Misty
boylane # 30. April 2009, 05:59
You simply need to copy them from an official SecondLife viewer into the RainbowViewer folder. The readme listing the files is C:\Program Files\RainbowViewer\README_IMPORTANT!!!.txt
boylane # 30. April 2009, 06:00
The radar in the emerald viewer is from Dale Glass and has a lot of features that were made for Luskwood and do not work properly. So this needs a major rework before it could be properly used. And I don't have the time or energy for this
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 09:14
what about a version for mac? I would love to try it..
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 09:27
I looked on my computer in the SL folders and didn't find a voice folder for some reason (found windlight and cache and some other stuff) but I couldn't find any folders or "pieces" that showed them. I know they have to be there because voice runs on the SL viewer. I'm probably looking way too hard or something.
Thanks Boy...I'll dig around again.

Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 11:54
Will be great have a version for MAC too ;)
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 16:37
I'm loving this viewer really, it gets rid of the One and only reason i disliked Cool Viewer, I really do find the New UI a bit easier to use and alot less cluttered..... Especially since i only have a 17 inch screen avoiding a ton of screen clutter and buttons helps out alot.... This viewer is quite alot nicer to use then cool viewer and i hope that development on it continues for various reason
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 17:38
There is one thing i notice, is that IM's do not pop up when you're in local chat to show you that something was sent... Unless you force it into local chat and console, which displays it indefinitely instead of just a quick flash....
boylane # 30. April 2009, 18:26
The behaviour should be identical with the official SL viewer. Please verify that and if it's a bug I'd ask you to open a Jira ticket for it. Thank you
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 22:16
Where exactly would i post a Jira? and no it doesnt seem to be identical for some odd reason or another i'm unsure why... the text appears in local chat in grey but no IM pops up on the lower chat bar like it does under the normal viewer... At least i havent seen it do that... I was purposly IM'ing people to test it out as well...
Anonymous # 30. April 2009, 22:56
I'd love to use this viewer but for some odd reason it closes as soon as it loads to 'Initializing Multimedia' Any idea why?
boylane # 1. May 2009, 06:20
Avoid Catalyst 9.4, disable VBO in the graphic preferences of SL and disable Catalyst A.I. in your windows graphics control panel.
boylane # 1. May 2009, 06:22
I don't know how exactly the official viewer behaves these days and I don't want one on my machine
There are some settings in Cool Features how chat and IM are displayed. Also settings in the Communication Prefs affect this. Could you please try if this changes something?
Anonymous # 1. May 2009, 13:51
Well i can get it to display in local, problem is it displays somewhat indefinately as a grey line (this is an option in the normal viewer as well) However in the standard viewer a brief popup comes up if you are in local chat, or a different IM to signify you were sent a new IM by the person without being in local chat indefinitely (since i keep meeting logs sometimes it becomes a hassle when i need to go through and clear out all the IM's on top of other things...
This behavior happens in both cool viewer and rainbow viewer upon further inspection, To clarify - Standard Client - If i receive a new IM unless i am currently in that IM there is a brief popup at the bottom showing what the message was and who sent it, In either cool viewer or rainbow viewer this behavior does not happen i need to check which IM is flashing, to get the behavior like that i have to display it in local chat history and keep that up at all times.
The settings in communicate dont actually seem to effect that on the normal viewer it seems to just be there in general... The settings are identical in both viewer unless the (( )) (ooc) stuff and the : stuff muddles with that i cant see what would be causing the behavior....
It is a nice feature to have obviously since it makes it a whole lot easier to track when talking to numerous people and all that :)
boylane # 2. May 2009, 05:36
I just tried it with CV, RV and official viewer. They behave the same way. When you have the IM/Communicate window closed you get a small blue button "IM received". If it is already open a blinking new tab indicating new IM appears.
Anonymous # 2. May 2009, 16:02
Great work! Thank you for doing this. My new favorite viewer!
Anonymous # 2. May 2009, 18:30
i would loooove a mac version ....smile :))
Anonymous # 2. May 2009, 22:30
@boylane
The way you say that the radar in GreenLife Emerald Viewer is the Dale Glass radar implies that its just copied; as the source is free to download, I would appreciate it if you actually bothered to diff it before implying it is as outdated and limited as the original Dale Glass version; it has been modified to a very significant degree, and is fully useable in 1.22.x, so it would not require any significant modification afaik to implement it in CV. (Also, I noticed in the Imprudence blog you indicated that you thought the viewer might in some way be illegitimate? I'm curious why that would be)
boylane # 3. May 2009, 05:35
Hi Thomas
I just had a look at your latest version (b89) and I see this is all fixed now compared to the old version I tried. Great job! Perhaps I will indeed implement it in a new build. Thanks for pointing to it again!
I can't remember I have said anything negative on the Imprudence blog, if so this was unintentional. Rather that I appreciate you listed your viewer in the Wiki and that I welcome you. My apologies if it sounded that way.
Anonymous # 3. May 2009, 09:44
@boylane
I'm not thomas, there are four people working on GreenLife Emerald viewer actually o.o (all but one of which are listed on the site support page if anyone cares)
Sorry, perhaps I jumped to silly conclusions o-o

I really like this new version. I was irritated with Cool Viewer in that I had to merge the Local Chat window *every* time I logged on (and I really didn't understand *at all* the default behavior of the Cool Viewer where local chat could *only* be typed at the bottom of the screen--why would anyone want the ability to use the cursor keys to fix typos disabled when typing in local chat, and having to click the bottom of the screen or possibly clicking on a scripted item every time one wanted to go from typing in an IM to local chat instead of simply clicking a different nearby tab? What is handy about that? Thankfully that crippling "option" isn't even available in this version. Thank you thank you thank you!).
It also doesn't by default turn ":" into "/me" so I can type :D to represent a smile instead of it changing it to "Fmeh Tagore D" automatically, nor does it substitute anything else that is typed into something else either. I didn't have to turn off a bunch of "cool options" that to me just got in the way of using the program. Again, thank you thank you!!!
So far the bugs that were in Cool Viewer with some scrolling graphics layers is no longer there, and it seems to be more stable as well.
--------------
A tip to those wanting to copy the files from Linden Labs' Second Life folder to the new one:
If you have shortcuts available already, it's *really* easy to do.
Right click the shortcut of Rainbow Viewer, select "properties", then "Find Target" ("Find Target" is called something else in Vista)--if you don't have the shortcut, assuming C: is your main drive, go to c:\program files\RainbowViewer
Now right click the shortcut for Second Life and do the same, or go to c:\program files\SecondLife -- hold ctrl and hit the letter a, then keep ctrl held and hit the letter c.
Now go back to the rainbow viewer folder, hold down ctrl and hit the letter v. When it asks if you want to replace files, type capital N for "no to all" which is a hidden option (it's not an option you can normally click with the mouse). This will only copy files that are not already there.
Voila.

@Boy.... What i mean is that the Text does not pop up in CV/RV when you get a new IM like it does in official, like if you sent me an IM in world i'd know i got one from you specifically unless i had an Im open with you from the start. It'd show actual text, not just a button or something
Anonymous # 3. May 2009, 23:04
Double checking something here quickly :P. To clarify the behavior is when you are in an IM and someone im's you, you get a popup of the other im's..... this doesnt happen at all for some reason on CV/RV.... i just tested the behavior myself not sure why.. To show you how my normal viewer behaves...
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/clubrepublik/IMshow.jpg
Notice in the lower left that it does in fact have a lil box pop up, thats on the standard viewer, If i'm in an im with someone else and someone new sends me an im or someone i'm in an im with but not in the same window as does, i get that lil popup.
I do not get that in CV/RV, even though the communicate stuff is all the same, all that is enabled is the : for me and the (( auto closing for OOC...
Anonymous # 3. May 2009, 23:05
To clarify its not really a box but rather a line of text......
Anonymous # 3. May 2009, 23:09
CV/RV pop up with an IM received if the communicate box isnt open, which is different behavior, its manageable without it, i'm just pointing out that its different behavior and would be nice to have the same behavior since it makes who is speaking a bit more manageable :)

boylane # 4. May 2009, 04:10
Ok, understand what you mean now. That is the setting to show IM in chat console or something like that. Have to check what exactly the name was but you can configure that.
boylane # 4. May 2009, 04:11
Did you select a no-mod prim? Of course you can not edit it
