Rainbow Viewer 1.23
Wednesday, 17. June 2009, 17:58:58
The Lab pushed some premature software, the 1.23.4 viewer, out to get their adult policy implemented at whatever cost, purely political and ignoring all damage it does to users. But that's nothing new and basically what we all had expected anyway.
I'm not supporting anything 1.23 in the moment and I can only recommend everybody *NOT* to *update* to that piece of cr*ppy software. It is not ready for prime time and it will cause you nothing but problems and reduced functionality. Stay away from 1.23, there is NO reason to *update* (eehhhh..downgrade...).
History repeats itself here....LL doesn't give a sh*t on it's users as they did in the past with lousy viewers they forced to the hands that feed them.

So are you going to fix it for us? Don't worry about LL, they will break anything you give them. I do not want to sound like I'm rushing you, just hoping you are looking into fixing their crap for us.
CindyCD42Fairey # 17. June 2009, 22:48
It'd be nice to have a viewer that passes whatever signal the server side software is looking for to tell it the user has opted in for adult content, then utterly and deliberately fails to implement anything else to do with it.
Just an "I'm an adult. Leave me alone" tick box under cool settings...

I don't understand your post at all. I've read the SLDev list and watched this coming. I don't see anything different, time-line or bug fixes) this time around than every other viewer update since 2007. I downloaded the 1.23.4 viewer and started it and I've been in SL just fine ever since. I build, I own land, I buy and sell, I spend hours upon hours in SL ... no failure. The only times I've crashed I went down with the sim (some really great parties)!
Margarine # 17. June 2009, 23:23
Since I'm a grid-hopper, an official LL client is no option for me, I realy applaud the efforts taken by 3rd. party clients. Love the Cool for it's speed, YES... even at OpenSim it's the best rendering, even on a non-supported Intel Cartiga, big THANKS BoyLane!
Yes, I can confirm as Howard Linden stated: "Becouse search-experience improvements have been made ya ALL begged so hard for (Adult sh*t!), there's been NO room for further improvements...". Ehhh... As IF we couldn't find what we're looking for already, as IF so many good came from LL past 2 years... Btw. for those who REALY wish to Up/Down-grade LL official: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions but I'd personaly recomment Cool, Meerkat, Kirstens or even Hippo for a much wider view on YOUR preferred metaverse...
LL has many subtle ways to enforce stupid policy oppon it's users and even slowdown experience developement in official and 3rd. party clients... Grrrr... Made me downgrade my LL account, has been a great time but it seems time to move on, there are a lotta metaverses out there, ready to explore! Also a lotta passionate coders who all try to compensate for Linden lazyness at a much higher developement rate, wich came practicaly to a HALT in SL a long time ago, LL isn't a STANDARD but became a RELIC! So...
With all my heart I hope BoyLane's able to keep the GOOD stuff comming... Marg.
Edit 10 min's later: Lol... As some nasty LL blogs on this matter are being hushed-up or moved... Ehhh, IMPROVED ofcouse! ... SUBTLE also means this Old_versions main page just has been taken off-line, but u may wanna try it here. Nahhh... Believe me, when using Cool u don't(!), http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions#1.20.17 (Latest 1.22.xx!)

Great if it works for you. More objective however is a list of current issues:
http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=12040
The 1.23.4 viewer was pushed out prematurely for exactly 2 reasons:
1) to enable the adult policy as soon as possible (which is incomplete/unfinished by itself)
2) to follow the release policy LL set for themselves. Obviously not connected to the reality.
https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2009/03/09/supported-viewer-versions
There is no need to "update" to a 1.23 viewer to access anything that is rated adult.
boylane # 18. June 2009, 04:23
Additional comment, the older viewers on that wiki page do not work anymore (anything below 1.21). Thats due to recent protocol changes. But you can find an updated 1.20.17 viewer here on the blog that does work. I however suggest the 1.22 (Windlight) and 1.19 (non-Windlight) for a bit older hardware.
SatomiAhn # 18. June 2009, 07:30
Still there are some unacceptable bugs:
- polices that are eaten (the bottom of the letters does not show in some configurations)
- big framerate drops in many configarations (never seen this though)
- anti-aliasing cannot be disabled
- some issue with HUDs, I heard (could anybody exlpain to me what this issue is about?)
- ... ?
All in all, 1.23 branch is not worse than 1.22. All would be fine, if the current viewer would still be called 1.23rc4!
(but 1.22 required 12 rc iterations... why should 1.23 need only 5?)
Anonymous # 18. June 2009, 08:36
Ok I agree the 1.23 viwer is realy "special".
1.22 was a maintenance release focused on stability and bug fix, thats why they had 12 iteration. 1.23 is a feature-introduction viewer and has "normal" interation cycle.
I agree releasing this viewer is mainly to push the new adult policy but I don't find so much bug with it. It doesn't crash more to me and is not slower than 1.22. Yes there are font troubles (they changed it for ATI video drivers and I have a nVidia board).
You must remember LL works on 2.0 viewer too and this viewer also integrate dynamic shadow (leads to new slowdown/bugs).
A rainbow viewer would be greatly apreciated, cause I miss all the great features: double-clic to wear, wear-panel, advanced build option, RLV, flexy sculpt, etc. but I agree it's a lot of work for a viewer that may be re-released soon.
boylane # 18. June 2009, 09:47
With that I completely agree
And we will see a number of iteration cycles coming to make a proper release out of this "release candidate". My time is too precious to waste it with LL's experiments to figure out how proper software development works. Obviously they gave their new release policy a higher priority than quality control. How funny as QA was always used as excuse not to include patches and fixes in the past that would have improved usability and experience at large.
Again as I wrote in SLDev, shame on you LL!

Hi Boy
1) @ Cincia: You are among a very small minority if this RC viewer works well for you. The rest of us will not touch it even with someone else's bargepole.
2) @ Vincent6: On my connection, this RC is an absolute disaster. I WILLNOT use it.
3) @ Boy: We, who have used your viewers for a long time, will await something that is useable with my connection.
Yours
Ayesha

Opt-out of adult content filtering with OpenSearch: http://www.metaverseink.com/MIsetup.html. Hope it becomes a user option in your next fantastical viewer.
boylane # 18. June 2009, 18:18
I don't say I won't make a 1.23, I just say I don't have the time now to go through all the iterations to come to get it proper. That's due to RL things but I hope I have more time towards the end of the year. Perhaps it's stable then
Anonymous # 19. June 2009, 01:13
@Boy Lane ... Every viewer has bug fixes left out and creates new bugs; if they didn't you wouldn't be doing your viewers. And that was a nice spanking LL gave you in the SLDev list wasn't it?
@Ayesha ... Even you point out the issue is with your connection, not the viewer.
I've always enjoyed both BL's viewer and KL's viewer. I've also tried Emerald and Imprudence. Today I tried the Snowglobe viewer. They all work. None works better than the other. Each has it's good options built in. The drama about viewers and adult content continues for its own sake because they're all moot.
boylane # 19. June 2009, 07:15
"And that was a nice spanking LL gave you in the SLDev list wasn't it?" LOL, wasn't it the other way around?
Sure, you are right, viewers have bugs. But in the past viewers were not released before they reached a level of stability and usability because of political issues such as to force the adult policy or to comply with the self set release policy that seems not to be connected to reality. This time there was NO Quality Assurance (QA), yes that's the argument LL so often used to deflect important patches and fixes. Or at least it was not done with due dilligence, otherwise 1.23.4 would not have been pushed out of the door.
I simply don't have time for this, nothing more nothing less. Should 1.23 reach maturity one day I certainly will look at it again. But for now that's far away.
NicholazBeresford # 19. June 2009, 14:28
Back then after some terrible viewers the Lindens made a really good one, which was 1.18.0. However, they had the voice feature on the agenda, wanted to push it out, ignored new regressions/bugs on the JIRA or dismissed them as marginal and almost killed the viewer with 1.18.1. Subsequently with 1.19 Windlight they repeated the process (also 2007/2008).
It took them a year to recover from that and even official 1.22 seemed to be a really good one.
With v1.23 I see the process repeat itself. There were regressions on the JIRA, but with the idea to push out adult filtering out in time, new regressions/JIRAs become ignored or are dismissed as just individual problems ... I guess they consider them minor collateral damage on the way to more important goals.
What we learn from history is that history repeats itself.

I also remember the original issues with Windlight's release (though not so much with Voice, I only just started using that). It was one of the final issues that made me step away from SL on a regular basis - though I still login from time to time, to see how things are doing.
My 5th year within SL came and went last week, and its telling that I forgot about it until the 3rd (the 'actual' first day I stepped on a normal 'parcel' - Telador). In some ways, a lot has changed; But in the important places, it appears to still be the same...

I installed the newest LL RC candidate today (1.23.4 (123523) Jun 9 ) because while I LOVE your viewer and had been having issues with the older RC, I couldn't deal with the layering issues any longer. The newest RC did fix that problems and textures seem to be loading faster than they did with the last RC from LL that I used.
I'm a fashion blogger and so having your pant cuffs look like skin, eyelashes a mess and skirts not working at all is a royal pain. BUT I miss a lot of your features like the WORN tab and the double click to wear feature -- all extremely helpful for folks constantly changing clothes. It seems like I am using the latest Rainbow viewer, but can you tell me if the layer thing is fixed on the Cool Viewer and does that have those options I uses so much. Thanks.
I know I can download and install but I'm guessing others might want to know too. And not everyone using your viewers are techie enough to read the release notes and know what they mean :D - LOL.
boylane # 9. July 2009, 18:17
I do not make a 1.23 viewer yet. All you can download here is 1.22 and I keep boycotting 1.23 for the time being

Thank you, I have just discovered your viewer, wish I had a long time ago. It is significantly faster than the "official" version. I have a ATi HD3650 Chipset in a Sony Laptop. This Coolview 1.22 seems so much more stable with the add on.
However, can I ask, is there the ability to run Multiple copies for ALTS? The LL Viewer uses -multiple, do you use the same?
Thanks
Sol

Hi there -- just wanted to agree that the newest LL RC candidate does indeed have some big issues *wink* and while it DOES fix the layering problems, little things like disappearing heads as well as jewelry turning invisible and hair disappearing when flying are -- not good :D So going back to Rainbow except when I absolutely have to get those layers to work. Sigh.
Anonymous # 23. July 2009, 22:42
Today 7-23-2009 search results WERE filtered with rainbow viewer 1.22 and the workaround posted called "Accessing adult content with older viewers" at the top of this page DOES NOT work... hopefully Boy will come to his senses and support all of us who have used his viewers faithfully for a long time now instead of screwing us all like LLs does already *sigh*. Somehow I think Boy has a bit more class than LLs and he'll eventually come through for us all.
boylane # 24. July 2009, 10:47
I don't appreciate this kind of feedback in several ways. You are not only too lazy to look and read, you are also offensive and hide behind unclear statements and anonymity. I suggest you stick with LL's official viewer.
Thanks.

well thats that. tried loading 1.22 cool viewer and it feels like LL blocked it now reason is because i try loading the cool viewer and it crashed just as it finishes logging in. as it seems LL doesn't want people running the older viewer so they force people to update. i'm running the newer LL viewer it works (but i hate it with a passion and as it seems i'm stuck with it for now till LL does something smart for once)
CindyCD42Fairey # 26. August 2009, 13:15
CoolViewer 1.22.11 is working fine for me this morning. ( 9-26-09, 06:14 SLT )
Try clearing your cache and/or a clean reinstall.

It works fine, LL can't make applications crashing (that were working before). At least not in that intentional way
Anonymous # 29. August 2009, 01:58
i did. and haveing the same issue on my notebook aswell where i've not had t any issues.

hasnt anyone ever heard about looking a gifthorse in the mouth? or how about in plain english "if you DIDNT PAY FOR IT you CANT complain about it"

Time are not mature enough for a new release?
Or you'll be out of the clients soon....
